Mahe hasnt looked that great but he made a good play at the end there. The only thing that really bothered me in the first half was pinkston dropping yet another TD, although he was hit before the ball got there. That and the fact that owens doesnt have a catch. There is no excuse for that, you get the ball in his hands and he makes plays. Mcnabb looks decent enough for preseason i guess.

Verron. VER. RON. One N, at the end. Pat's gone and killed his braincells with all those years of drinking next to Madden. Verron. Verron Haynes. Not complicated. We're not asking you to say Antwaan Randle El. Not Kimo von Olhoffen. It's not Chris Fu'amatu Ma'afala, he's gone. It's Verron Haynes. Come on, Pat. You got Roethlisberger without shitting all over the name, and I'm certain that you would pass out if you actually tried to read the name off a sheet of paper.

edit: Nevermind, he can't even differenciate between Pittsburgh and Philly. He's lost.

i can't fucking STAND the espn commentators. here are some typical things they'll say:

<McNabb completes pass to tight end>
Paul: Great throw and catch! You know, I asked McNabb yesterday "Hey, will the tight ends be more involved?" And then he smiled at me, he smiled at me with those gorgeous whites and said "stay tuned!" What an awesome player! I love McNabb and I love the eagles!

<McNabb narrowly escapes a sack>
Paul: LOOK AT MCNABB! he escapes a sack, and runs for 7 yards! Sweet jesus christ that was the greatest play i've ever seen! You talk about true heart and grit, folks take a look at GQ Man of the Year McNabb! I love it!

<McNabb throws a 5 yard touchdown>
Paul: HOLY SHIT! I wish mcnabb would spooge all over my face! To taste his sweet spunk would be a dream-come-true for me! Give me a call donovan, you truly are the greatest of the great!

all the while, mcnabb shows his horrible inaccuracy over 20 yards and got something like 7-17 in the half, but no mention of that. here are the top 5 players that these dumbass ESPN comentators jock:

1. Brett Favre
2. Mike Vick
3. Steve McNair
4. Donovan Mcnabb
5. Tom Brady

i seriously can't stand these guys

They did talk about his accuracy problems early in the game... I still say what he lacks in accuracy he more than makes up for in playmaking ability.

The misplaced N is spreading. Now they've got Thiesmann saying Vernon Hayes. Maybe he's just trying to not make Pat feel senile.

On another note about these horrible announcers, I know it's the preseason, but you can try and get some information about the players who aren't stars. Say SOMETHING. They didn't even make a comment about how the backup quarterback and the third string running back(Who has had two great preseasons in a row) were in with the first string offense against the Eagles starters. Just MENTION that. Say something of it. At least make a passing note. Try and find something about a backup that is interesting. I'm sure that between all of these players, there's an interesting fact, anecdote, or just a note of curiousity.

Say something. Act interested. It's all you have to do. AND SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT MCNABB AND OWENS. THEY ARE DONE, AND DIDN'T PLAY THAT WELL.

edit: It just doesn't stop. "You're the gritty blocker, he's the flashy receiver. How do you feel about that?"

Yeah, Ward is just the gritty blocker. Who just happens to have outperformed Owens in every single WR category over the past two years. Fine, Owens is a star. I get that. I don't necessarily get why, aside from the fact that he's an asshat, but I get that he is. At least mention that Ward is on the same level, if not better than, Owens. Just throw it out there. You can comment on the talent of somebody who is underrated and not respected as much as he should be, nobody is going to yell.

When has an announcer ever said that one star is better than another? That type of comment would upset more than a few people.

Edit: Wow, Andy Hall looks horrible. Something tells me he wont be picked up by another team.

I didn't want them to. I said he should get recognition as a star receiver, as being on Owens's level, they hadn't been doing that. They clearly give precedence to some players. I understand that Owens is the big acquisition, but with all of their jocking of McNabb, it gets damned annoying. And they did say afterwards that Ward's stats are as good as Owens over the past few years, but they still gave the impression that Owens is a better receiver.

Fuck karma, nothing worse is going to happen to the Fins this year. :D So I've got lots of ill will towards lots of teams. It's time for some come-uppance. PEACE.

Quincy sucks.

I didn't get to watch, how did Rothleisberger look? Paul Macguire and Theismann are awful. The all-time worst was the game last year where Vick came back from his injury and they were playing Carolina. I swear I thought Paul and Joe would leave the booth, get sex changes, and compete to see who could have Vick's baby.

I'll never forget how to pronounce Verron Haynes because I witnessed his all-time career game against Ole Miss. Many are the players who had their career days against Ole Miss.

owens had one td called back, one possible td when mcnabb under threw him on like the 2nd play of the game, and one at the back of the endzone when owens dropped it.

im hoping these plays are TDs in the reg season. mcnabb looked fine to me...again there were some drops, some bad balls he threw, and some good coverage but overall i can see him having a great yr barring injuries. btw this was without westbrook who is a playmaker himself. and i just love watching mcnabb avoid sacks where he is already wrapped up.

pitt impressed me with thier run game. i know they have arguably the best WR trio but they kept pounding very well. not that the eagles run d is the greatest but still i was dissapointed with the eagles not being able to stop them. and again we lose another LB...add nate wayne to dhani jones, ike reese, and trotter. but i hear its a strained hamstring and hope he will be ready in two weeks.

mahe mad some great cuts. hall is horrible. berger looked pretty good.

Definitely, but you forgot Ray Lewis....he's right up there with Favre and Vick on ESPN's FILF list.

I didn't get to watch, how did Rothleisberger look?

Ok....He was 7 of 11 for 74 yards with an INT. The pick came when Freddie Milons (or Freddie Millions if you're Pat Summeral) short armed an easy catch and deflected the ball to a defender. Ben did look really good on a play with a lot of pressure coming up the middle. He shrugged off a guy, scrambled to the right and threw a bullet off his back foot to Matt Kranchick of all people for 26 yards down to like the Eagles 5. All in all it was kind of a drab game though.

Hey, don't you say Matt Kranchick "of all people". All he's good for is catching the ball deep down field. Hell, he does it better than a lot of wide receivers(Okay, he does it better than any of last year's Penn State wide receivers...)

Kranchick is really fast, and huge. He gets to balls to catch them. I would like to see him get a roster spot. He's had a long reception in each game of the preseason so far. He's doing fairly well.

edit: On the subject of roster spots, who do the Steelers fans here think should get them at running back? I'd like to see Bettis, Staley, and Brown at RB, and then Kreider and Haynes at fullback. Parker would be stuck on the practice squad, but they simply can't go with 5 halfbacks(Which is what Haynes has become, really).

lol, Pat called him "Freddie Millions." That's what we used to call him when he was playing for Alabama because they paid a lot of money to get him to go there.

Oh yeah they do love Ray Lewis. But I still think Vick takes the cake. I cannot tell you how much I hate it when announcers are slobbering all over Vick's package.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if they kept him over Riemersma (Or Remerzma if you're the ESPN guys, man did they just butcher names most of the night.) Jay seems to be too injury ridden to last a full season and I don't think he's that good a blocker, granted, I haven't gotten to keep a good eye on him this preseason.

That's a tough one.....I really wish I could see Parker running with the first team against a first team. But I guess at the moment he's more of just a raw skill guy without all the fundamentals yet. So I think what you picked is what they'll probably end up with.

Im not really worried about the run defense considering most of our starting defense will be back for the first game of the season. Trotter is especially good vs the run. Mahe looked really average IMO. He was slow and went down far to eaisly. He is still better than Mcoo for his special teams play alone. I guess we shouldnt really expect much more out of our 3rd running back. We were spoiled last year.

Is his list of players that deserve to be jocked or not? And what's wrong with jockin Ray? During the season he plays hard in each game and definitely makes an impact. He's one of those people that lifts the other folks who play with him.

It's not to say that the list of people aren't great players. But for a three hour telecast with the Sunday night crew, it's too much. How about when somebody gets a great block on Ray? Does that guy usually get any props, or a mention at all? We need a little balance, that's all I'm asking. They'll talk Mike Vick all night, but with little mention of how his passing game still has a ways to go yet. And if they mention it once, then it's back to talking about how he beat the Packers in Lambeau for another 30 minutes (as if the Falcons had nobody else contributing in that game.) Just like we'll have to hear how tough McNair is...ok, we got it the first 26 times you've stated it. Heck, we had to hear about McNair last night and he wasn't even playing in the game.

I agree with you about how they jock certain players, although I believe that Ray, as the hardest working player in the NFL, is deserving of the praise. Hey, much as the Steelers and Ravens fans hate each other, I still think that Hines Ward should be considered a top 4 NFL reciever, and get tons of attention by the broadcasters. As FMT has showed us in the past, Favre is by far the best(worst?) example of commentators jocking a player.

He was out with an injury. Unless I was seeing things the eagles had one of their backup offensive linemen in at linbacker for half the game. Thats how bad things have gotten.

Here's the problem in the situation you described.... said guy is gonna get one maybe two good blocks on Ray.... Ray's gonna get good tackles and disrupt plays all game... who should be discussed more?

...and grudgingly what Fifty said. ;)

Come on now, let's not pretend that Ray makes every single tackle in every single game. You know that there's been times when Ray's had a bad game, or the team for that matter....there's nothing wrong in admitting it, these guys are only human after all. I for one was kind of tired with all the Tommy talk in 2002 knowing that there were some games where he got away with some throws or there was a game like the one against Houston late in that season where he was a huge reason why they lost it. And it's actually why I'm kind of glad that Hines doesn't get as much media attention, becuase it turns into overkill. IMO, the announcer's job isn't to talk these guys up like they're the only ones on the field, tell me about this game and who's made a good play, even if it's a player that, horror of horrors, may not be as well known. Or tell me when a guy looks off his game out there, but don't keep repeating the same stuff about how Ray Lewis "inspires his whole team." Or how it's so much fun to watch Brett Favre win or lose. Or how Steve McNair could get run over by twenty tanks and keep playing. It's pretty tiring. Save that stuff for the billions of talk shows that exist before and after the games.

Oh I could care less about the commentary but it's ludicrous to think that Ray doesn't have more many good games than bad, he wouldn't get the attention he does if that was the case and that's pretty much the end of my contribution on that particular topic.

Is that sarcasm? His name is actually pronounced "Coke-lee". And it confuses the hell out of me that they all got that name correct, and they couldn't read phoenetic names properly.

As for the Steelers fans hating Ravens fans...hey, your team royally fucked over the city of Cleveland. You're at least alright in my book. :D

edit: And as for Ray Lewis, he was the best player on one of the best defensive teams ever. He's also arguably one of the top players ever at one of the most important defensive positions. He deserves a hell of a lot of credit. But star-jocking is one of the worst things about the "Number 1" announcer teams. It applies to most of them. I just can't stand when there are players on opposing teams who are about equals, and one gets all the attention with the other being an afterthought.

Star jocking seems to exist to sell the sport....the problem is that they force it upon everyone watching, all the time. Guys watching a preseason game usually know their shit, so it annoys me to hear them talk about ANY player 24/7. They obviously think (or know?) that keeping the topic on a star player is a safe course of action, and that it might keep casual fans tuned in. It sucks, but it's always going to be a fact of the game.

I don't know how you assessed that from my post as that's not what I stated at all. Yes, Ray has more good games than bad (as do most of the players on their love list), but so do lots of other players that go relatively unnoticed by these guys in the booth. Players that are Ray's teammates even.

I agree, to them it is about "selling it" or appealing to the casuals. But I guess I would argue to them that the sport doesn't need it, at least not the NFL anyway.
