Giants' Strahan done; Jets lose Pennington
Both teams learned of devastating injuries that could seriously cripple their playoff hopes.
The Giants lost All-Pro defensive end Michael Strahan for the season, and the Jets will be without star quarterback Chad Pennington for two to four weeks.
Strahan is done for the year with a torn pectoral muscle and will be joined on the inactive list for the remainder of the season by the team's other starting defensive end, Keith Washington, who tore an ACL.
Strahan told FOXSports.com that his worst fears were confirmed when an MRI showed a tear of his pectoral muscle. Strahan was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's loss to Chicago.
Strahan's absence will mark the first time he has missed a game since 1995 an incredible streak for anybody, much less a defensive lineman. Washington has 17 tackles this season but has been extremely dependable flanking the other side of the line from Strahan.
For the Jets, Pennington will be sidelined with a strained right rotator cuff.
Pennington was hurt in the first quarter of a 22-17 loss to Buffalo on Sunday when he scrambled up the middle for a 12-yard gain. Rather than sliding, he elected to dive ahead and was hit from the right side by linebacker London Fletcher, who forced a fumble.
Pennington continued playing, but his arm started to stiffen and he left the game in the fourth quarter after talking with coach Herm Edwards. An MRI exam Monday revealed the strain. Pennington started rehabbing immediately to regain the strength in his arm.
"I look at Chad, I feel bad for Chad," Edwards said. "But the good thing is he'll be able to come back. That's the great thing about it."
Former Cowboys starter Quincy Carter will start Sunday against Baltimore.
Elsewhere, Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich is also likely to miss two games with a sprained left knee.
Leftwich was re-evaluated Monday, and doctors determined there was no need for surgery. But he will remain in a brace and on crutches this week.
Coach Jack Del Rio said he expected Leftwich to return Nov. 28 at Minnesota. Backup David Garrard will make his second career start Sunday against Detroit.
Del Rio said there was a slight chance Leftwich would return Nov. 21 against Tennessee, but he is not counting on it.
