NHL 2011-2012 Offseason thread of Cash Rules Everything Around Me

Calling it now, the Blues end up with Brooks Orpik by the end of the day.

Stewart for Orpik and a 3rd Rounder.

EDIT: All of this assuming the Pens get Suter (Which I think they will)

That would be a good trade, if anything can get Stewart going it would be playing with Malkin or Crosby. Though I think the Pens would want to move Martin more so.

Obviously things can change quick, but it appears Brodeur, Parise, Hedberg, Ponikarovsky, Salvador and Sykora will all test free agency.

Jordan Staal agrees to terms with CAR. 10 years, $60M. Done.

Damn. Complete Devils exodus.

Agreed, limit the contracts to 6 years for the sake of some of these franchises.

It also has a bad effect on the free agent market.

It goes against the spirit of the cap, too, when you can pay a guy nothing in the last couple years of a deal to lower the cap hit.

Not only free agency- there's a lot of skilled rookies that don't get a chance because some of these players are clogging up roster spots

There should be a limit of 4, honestly

6 is still way too long

Isn't the cap hit the average salary over the life of the contract? So how does front loading and long term deals go against the spirit of the cap?

because you can manipulate it where you give a guy a contract 4 years longer than he'll likely be playing at a low salary, bringing the average down overall while he still gets paid the big bucks during his prime years

The players who agree to that type of contract will most likely retire before the end of it. Therefore, frontloaded contracts with a few extra bogus years tacked on at the end artificially lower the player's cap hit.

Guys sign very long term deals, with no intention of playing the last few years of their contract when their salaries come down to a million.

That isn't likely with Jordan Staal, since he is like 23 years old haha.

#Oilers pick up $4M in cap space, as Smyth's AAV goes from $6.25M to $2.25M for next 2 years. Get the player AND open up space.

Pens are not getting Suter, Parise maybe, but I don't think it will be Suter as he wants to stay in the midwest.

Agreed 100%. We've yet to see a single one turn out well for the team.

Ok, so to recap: told #pens will make their best ever UFA offer to Parise, but big bonus/upfront cash unlikely. They won't be high bidder

Also, they will make play for Suter, too. Same thing as with Parise. Won't be high bidder, won't do big bonuses/upfront cash #pens

Then again, if it was ALL about upfront cash, #pens never had chance with Parise or Suter. #pens selling situation, good cash, and term

Randy Sportak ‏@SUNRandySportak Former #Flames RW David Moss was given "serious offers" said his agent, by the team but he's decided to become a UFA
