Girardi is terrible under pressure and is terrible handling the puck/playing the style AV wants to play.
His terrible fancy stats are ancillary reasons for his terribleness, but doesn't help his case.
He was a big reason for the loss in the SCF last year. He was crap. Hopefully we'll be able to jettison him in a couple of years, but with that contract...
I like a lot of what Girardi does, and I dislike a lot of what Girardi does. Being a big, physical, near-indestructible body is, all by itself, an asset on the blueline. He's aggressive, he blocks shots, and his physical presence can generally annoy star forwards. Having him paired with McDonagh also does a good job of accounting for the weaknesses in his game, as the areas where Girardi is weakest are some of McDonagh's strongest attributes. He's also a well liked guy in the locker room and a leader on the team (which is why he wears an A), so there's that off-ice factor, too.
But he does also have a tendency to leave his skates early and often and can frequently take himself out of a play for no reason. If you put him under major duress, he tends to go straight to panic mode. He's poor at puck handling, and that fact may well have cost us the Stanley Cup last year. He's also probably the one you can most easily beat with speed out of our top 4.
Overall, though, I think his presence is generally more positive than negative, and we could do a LOT worse than Girardi. We need to improve some things in our defense (most notably the insane turnovers we're handing out like candy lately), but I don't think Girardi is one of those things any time soon unless the return is crazy good.
Now, then...
