I'm going to try to sum up HFBoards on Matthews right now:
Laine is better because Liiga is better than National League A
Laine is better because he scored more at the world championships
Laine is better because he benched more, despite Matthews having heavier weights because he's in a different weight class
Laine lost an inch of height entirely because people shrink during the course of a day (but no answer for trying to explain how Matthews grew)
Matthews isn't on the same level as Eichel because of the Combine results (rip mcdavid)
Matthews was second line at the WC so he can't be relied on (he was #1 on USA on TOI)
Matthews is a poor mans Kopitar (wat)
It's like the Leafs having the first overall has turned that forum into an absolute shit show

But yeah, (some) of the finnish posters have been absolutely brutal on there over the last few months.
Hawks bandwagon needs more people.
People have too much time on their hands. At best, Matthews and Laine are comparable so you obviously pick the centerman, especially if you're the Leafs. Maybe Laine becomes the significantly better player down the line, but that'll be hindsight. If they're of comparable overall skill, you pick the more valuable position. No brainer.

Even then... Matthews crushes Laine on 5v5 production and is also elite defensively.
Every part of Matthews game is elite. Laine isn't on that level. Doesn't have the skating, the vision (aka passing game), the defensive game. He has an amazing release... but what else does he have to challenge Matthews?
Would Laine even be first overall if Matthews was a winger?
