OTTAWA (CP) - A report card look at Team Canada after Wednesday night's 3-1 exhibition win over the United States:
Forwards
Vincent Lecavalier, A: May have played his way onto the starting 20 for next week with a masterful performance, including opening goal when he used Super Mario as a decoy.
Dany Heatley, A: MVP of this year's IIHF world championship continues to shine, creating the turnover which led to Sakic's goal and looking dangerous on every shift.
Ryan Smyth, A: Veteran of six IIHF world championships was at his gritty best, creating space for linemates Lecavalier and Heatley.
Brad Richards, A: Conn Smythe Trophy winner was flying on Lemieux's left side, creating chances and finishing his own on Canada's third goal.
Mario Lemieux, B-plus: Looked dangerous in his first game since last November. Will only get better.
Shane Doan, B-plus: Two straight impressive games for power forward.
Joe Sakic, B-plus: Found his groove after a slow star Monday.
Jarome Iglina, B: Iggy hasn't gone into high gear yet.
Brenden Morrow, B: Two bad penalties in the first period but a physical presence.
Martin St. Louis, B-minus: Pressed too much playing with Lemieux; needs to relax.
Patrick Marleau, B-minus: Mishandled the puck on several occasions.
Joe Thornton, C: Big Joe is playing his way into the press box.
Defence
Jay Bouwmeester, A: Thunderous hit on Tony Amonte was bodycheck of the game, rushed the puck up the ice with confidence and made the right first pass out of his zone.
Adam Foote, A: Veteran a solid physical force, clearing the front of the net with authority.
Scott Niedermayer, A: World's best skater displayed his Norris Trophy form: tape-to-tape passes and smart decisions.
Eric Brewer, B-plus: Much better effort after Monday's forgettable game, played a physical game.
Wade Redden, B-plus: Moved the puck well and made smart decisions.
Scott Hannan, B: Solid but unspectacular.
Robyn Regehr, B: Ditto.
Ed Jovanovski, B-minus: Canucks star's giveaway led to American goal; made other poor decisions.
Goal
Roberto Luongo, A: Responded big time to Monday's shaky performance. High-light glove save off Keith Tkachuk's deflection.
Jose Theodore, A: No chance on Drury rebound goal, breakaway glove save off Brian Rolston was superb.

There will be no NHL season in 2004-05 if you believe the what the union is telling its members.
According to a report, the union didn't mix words when meeting with members of the U.S.'s entry in the World Cup of Hockey at the team's hotel prior to the U.S. vs. Canada exhibition game Wednesday.
"We were basically told [by union boss Bob Goodenow and senior director Ted Saskin] the same thing that we've been hearing all summer and it doesn't sound like they're getting anywhere in these negotiations," Team U.S.A.'s Bryan Smolinski told Sun Media.
"They said they were going to meet and don't expect anything to happen." It's the same old story. Is there going to be a salary cap? No. Are they getting anywhere in discussions? No. And we were warned that we had to be prepared for the lockout to last a year."
While NHL negotiators refused to comment on the talks, which produced nothing of any significance on Wednesday but are expected to continue Thursday, they continue to hold fast to their position that "cost certainty" is needed if the NHL is going to survive.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement expires in 19 days on Sept. 15.
I'm telling you, A.J. Thelen is warming up now.USA Hockey today announced that defenceman John-Michael Liles of the Colorado Avalanche will replace Hal Gill on Team USA's roster for the World Cup of Hockey.

dem said:After Germany theres a pretty big dropoff. You could maybe put Belarus in the mix.... but then you would have 9 teams.
I expect the Ukraine to start putting together a pretty decent team in the future though.
What time is that PST? Love the avatar by the way.dem said:Canada vs Slovakia is going to be on sportsnet today.
