NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

I thought the final "normal" boss being A2/9S was great, and far more impactful than just fighting another giant machine. I love how it comes right after the seamless tag-team boss battle against Ko-Shi and Ro-Shi, as that fight ends with both of them on opposite sides of each other. Then as they speak, it just slowly dawns on you that you're gonna have to choose one to play as in order to kill the other.... It was a great feeling, And regardless of what happens, 9S loses, because of course he does. Dude was crazy af.

The only thing I strongly desired from this game is more time with both A2 and Popola and Devola.

Yep I definitely agree with everything you said with the final bout, but personally I was just expecting the unexpected. You could see A2 & 9S were going to clash since he witnessed 2B's stab, when I was going into that tower I was expecting all kinds of crazy shit in terms of battles/bosses but not a lot happened.

But yeah when I got to the library the feels from the original Nier rushed through me, could have made an interesting scene to see Popola and Devola climb the tower with A2 and experience that room.

I adored the whole ending sequence inside the last tower.

I think people are trying to overlay Nier 1's map over Nier: Automata's and it's just not gonna work. I doubt they match up at all.

Those final mean spirited choices at the bottom had me rolling. I only saw positive things. I think I helped a bit to fix that :D

Where do you think pods found new A2 body at the end of E?
As we know there are no other A2 model bodies lying around and the one shown doesn't look like it was killed. And it has long hair too.

Maybe she was already reconstructed by this time, though.

I think they just rebuilt her body with replacement android parts.

Sure it looks new, but that's because they just used her standard model. No need to create a new character model for a 2 second shot from a bad angle.

I got a giggle when I saw one of the options was "I hate PlatinumGames!"

I love 9S's VA, he really brings it in the final act. He's been streaming his playthrough of the game on Twitch too and he fills in voices for a lot of the side quest stuff, it's awesome.

ohfuckohfuckohfuck

I hope they or someone archives that to Youtube

I was watching my friend finishing Route C/D and did you know that the last hack sequence you can do to 2A is, in fact, an in-game menu?!
I finished this one pretty quick and didn't notice but if you wait enough the camera starts to slowly move away...

Made some screenshots from steam streaming so sry for low quality:

Yep I've watched a few streamers miss it cause they just dps and not hack. Very sad as it was one of the coolest parts of the game.

If I recall, I believe that the pods were reconstructing the androids from the original pieces they could find. Or maybe they were talking about their data. I'm not sure.

I really hope the pods help them overcome their self-destructive programming. ;____;

Yeah, that last encounter was great. One of the most memorable end game I've ever seen in a video game. Just amazing stuff.

I do kind of feel bad for A2 as, like, a character. She gets little development and screen time, she's poorly established, and 9S's fight segues way better into Ending E than hers.

We should have seen more of her through Route A and B to build her up before turning the protagonist role over to her.

One difficulty with A2's character is that she needs to still be the cold, hard machine-killer when she puts 2B out of her misery, but she also needs to develop and experience enough to earn that "life is beautiful" pivot.

Spending more time with her before route C would build a stronger connection with her character, but it wouldn't help with how quickly she changes after that.

I felt like I got enough with A2 that it worked. The problem is a lot of that stuff is missable, and a lot of people don't see it. The entire A2 backstory is something a lot of people miss out on. Same with the Machine Village sidequest. You get them and you can immediately get locked out of them by progressing the main story a tiny bit. It's a shame because I think it helps the transition of A2 going from "I want to kill all robots" to being a bit more sympathetic a little smoother.

I still wouldn't mind more of her though, because I thought she was a cool character.

I think it's mainly the "life is beautiful" line that bothers me. I didn't feel her softening was completely egregious, but that line is just over the top saccharine.

I would have preferred her to just be happy about finally being reunited with A4 if more development was off the table.

I feel like the incorporation of 2B's memories affected her personality, so it's both her and 2B's emotional climax at the end of route C.

I got the rest of the Endings tonight and it was amazing. I've spent the past hour catching up in this thread and piecing together what I didn't quite understand completely due to the game taking me 45 hours to complete.

But really, what an inventive, thoughtful, and lovely game. Nier was one of my favorites when it released and this is the same for sure.

EDIT: When I'm done doing everything I want to in the game, I'm definitely sacrificing my save.

Dis a good video

Lost my shit when this happened.

Now I'm too high leveled to experience it again.

I want the DLC to be about Pascal rebuilding the machines village, but I know it will only end in Pascal finding out about what happened to the previous one. ;__;

I'd like more 2A story up to her stabbing the baby king.

Or even better: The Pearl Harbor drop. The story that you only get told in the Anemone story book.

So I'm sure this has come up a lot but - What ending is canon? Obviously E is the aftermath but is a follow-up to Ending C or D? I assume C.

So after I beat Emil at his home am I free to continue the quest with A2? I'm scared to go to chapter select and have to do it all over again, which I guess would mean you have to do it all with 9S.

So tsundere !

Canon means nothing in the Drakenier verse, especially after Drakengard 3 basically confirming all of the routes in every game are canon in a parallel universe kind of way.
So all routes are canon basically.

Who programmed the twins to feel guilt for all of eternity? The same group who created Project YorHa?
The androids leaders most likely.

I can't stop listening to "Weight of the World". But I don't know why I prefer songs with gibberish lyrics, they have some kind of otherworldly quality to them.

Who is this lady? You can find her on the upper floor of the Command Room in the Bunker. Here is her dialogue at the beginning of Routes A and B, before the Goliath assault on the City Ruins:
Then, after the Goliath assault and encountering Adam & Eve in the caves under the city during Routes A and B, this is what she says:
Close to the end of Route B whilst you're in the Bunker's server finding records about YoRHa, a new port to the server opens. It's the one that leads you to the Level-S Confidential Intel saying the Council of Humanity was created as part of YoRHa. I don't know who's behind that port, but the way 9S comments on it makes it seem like the server wouldn't just do it on its own. When you exit cyberspace to go answer 2B's distress call from the factory, that lady is gone. It's worth noting that most YoRHa combat troops seem to be gone at this point in the story, probably because they headed out to fight Grün, but there are still some pottering about on the Bunker as you can see in the third image:
Side-note: I'm not sure that additional port ever gets picked up on. It doesn't lead anywhere and the closest to it being mentioned again I can think of is 9S saying they can upload their data through "a backdoor" in the Bunker's server right before he self-destructs with 2B during Operation Berlin 046.

In any case, after Ending B where you can walk around after the credits, she says this:
And here's her dialogue at the beginning of Route C, right before the start of Operation Berlin 046 and the subsequent virus outbreak:
I haven't seen her elsewhere and she's not around when you get back to the Bunker after the outbreak in the City Ruins. There may be more situational dialogue, but I couldn't find it throughout multiple playthroughs now.

So what's up with her?

thinking of other YoRHa soldiers. I find it interesting that the pods treating the destruction of 2B/A2/9S as the end of the YoRHa project. I'm wondering if thats because they were the last ones alive that new the secrets, not necessarily the last ones alive.

I can think of 4 other YoRHa soldiers still alive by the end of route C. The two junkies in the desert, the soldier at the oasis in the desert, and 4S.

I commented on that before as well, but the ending with the Pods does specifically mention that they are detecting no more Black Box reactions, meaning those 4 should have bought the farm at some point as well.

There is actually an another character at the Resistance camp who behaves much the same. I've already deleted my save so I can't exact go and gather material on him/her (can't remember the gender of that char), but I seem to remember him/her being to the left after you climb the ladder in the 2D portion of the Resistance camp. Definitely some clock and dagger stuff, but for whose benefit... No idea.

ahh, I forgot about that line, and those 4 biting it off screen isnt exactly farfetched either.

And another thing I just thought of, Jesus christ ending C actually sucks hard if not for ending E. A2 sacrifices herself to save 9S and gets the pods to get him to safety. Without the context of ending E, the pods would just decommission 9S as part of project YoRHa

Another reason C feels like the proper lead in to E and not D

Isn't that the girl with the red scarf from the "Amnesia" side quest!

The lack of real gameplay progression is the biggest knock against the game imo.

Like you get new chips but you your gameplay loop doesn't change much over your 30-40 hour playthrough. Even the hacking doesn't get much variety.

Was expecting some drastic new mechanics out of a2 at the very least.

Barely used taunt and berserk.

Did you ever visit those junkies before Jackass invents that drug? One of them had actual ambitions before getting hooked :'(

Yeah, I know the one. She says she doesn't want you eavesdropping several times, but her dialogue in Route C made it seem more like she just went crazy:
Before that, she had an actual friend to talk to which made it seem like they were just gossiping:
Of course, that's still suspicious, but the one in the Bunker explicitly asks you if you're aware of whom the war is for and implies there being something the others haven't caught onto yet.

So what are everyone's favorite weapon stories? I finally read them all last night and I loved the ones for Cruel Blood Oath, Faith, and Phoenix Dagger.

I'm sure I'm not the first in there to mention this, but I was thinking about how you can buy the trophies/achievements and how that fits the theme of the game so perfectly. These stupid little things we do in games that give us these little pleasure bumps every time we earn one. In this game we can buy them, presenting them as meaningless. But that's the whole point, we have the choice to put meaning into what we're doing, even if some see it as pointless.

Yeah I'm actually really glad I selected 9S before I selected A2 at the end(even though the game didn't expect you to, apparently). D ironically felt like a 'better' ending if you compare it directly to C, least with D the data goes to the moon so maybe something good would happen... Then C kind of naturally progresses onto E really.
