I'd do a real world test, if I didn't keep falling asleep :(

Speaking of, I wanna see how long this thing lasts in sleep mode with wifi and stuff off. Gotta find someone who is bored of their 3DS, though. ;(

I could have sworn you were playing Pokemon Black... unless you're playing both for review purposes? Or I'm just dumb.

I have both, White is in English for my review. Black is the Japanese version I bought for myself.

How do you find the 3ds in DS mode compared to the DS lite? With the screens I mean.

I think it looks pretty good stretched, of course someone else will disagree with me straight away - the 1:1 pixel mode is hotness though - just like the Micro.

Haha. I just brought Pokemon Black and Chrono Trigger DS, then remembered I don't have a DS right now. Goddamnit.

Brought a DS Lite off my sister for £20. I'll trade it in on the 25th March and get £40 back towards my 3DS games. Sweeeeeet.

(couldn't think of anywhere else to post this, so I'll make it a bit more relevant now)

I'll definitely be playing in scaled mode. 1:1 would be cool, but it looks tiny. It's fine on a handheld the size of the micro, but when you have that much screen real estate it's a shame not to use it. Unless it looks like shit when stretched, that is. I guess I'll find out in just over two weeks.

Kotaku has an article up about eye strain and giving up on 3D. In contrast, the first comment paints the opposite picture. I think this "problem" is going to vary wildly from person to person, and how they use the system, whether they take the recommended breaks, etc. All in all I don't think it'll have much impact on the system as long as the non-gaming media outlets don't grab the story and go full-on FUD with it.

I fully expect my impressions to vary from game to game. For example, from what I've seen of Pokemon BW, the sprites and landscapes are usually scaled and zoomed so much that they're rarely pixel perfect, and even in battle they zoom and stretch, so I may end up playing that stretched, 3d games will probably look good stretched too. But for any crisp pixel art games I'll definitely go 1:1.

I'd like to see Space Invaders: Virtual Collection released in some form on 3DS (preferrably in color). Granted, it's just Space Invaders at an *angle*, but still.

As for VB Wario Land, I played the crap out of that on my Virtual Boy. I think I 100%'d it, too. Quite a fun platformer. One of the better ones Nintendo has made (I could never get into other Wario platformers). I showed the game to my wife and she thought it was kinda neat, but we don't have a stand for my VB. So it just sat on her face for the few minutes she played. After that, I went to test my Virtual Boy and it got the notorious glitchy meltdown in one eye...and it wasn't in stereo anymore. Sigh.

I just took my virtual boy out of storage, it was wrapped in plastic and still in its original box, and turned it on and BAM. Same thing, one eye was glitchy so no 3d. I'm guessing once it does this it's kaput? I own every NA virtual boy game except waterworld and baseball, very sad if I can never play them again :(

i wouldn't worry about FUD because the 3DS is beyond that.

anyway there isn't anything 'special' about the 3DS and how it displays stereoscopic 3D in terms of what your eyes need to do to see it. stereoscopic stuff uses your eyes differently. it's like swimming vs running. if you've got your body into great shape running, you'll still be tired as hell if you go for a long swim for the first time in ages.

i just got a 3dtv. my eyes feel 'tired' after three days of staying up late playing stuff on it... but the 'experts' say that the more you watch the 3d the less of a strain it becomes because you build up the muscles needed.

so yeah, i'm sure some daft people will decide never to play in 3d again after a week, just as some daft people stop running when after a few long runs they feel worse, but i'll be toughing it out and working out those eye muscles to the point where they don't feel tired.

My eyes get tired from playing on the PC or a DS Lite for too long. As long as I'm not playing a game 100% of the time all day, I'll be fine. I see no reason why the 3DS will be any different for me.

Mine did that too, I was totally bummed, figured it was broken. Then a while later I tried again and it worked fine, so I'm not sure if it's a permanent thing or maybe just a dusty/bad cartridge connection.

I'm trying to take some macro shots of the 3DS screen, it's just not working at all :/

Might have to just do with the bottom screen guys

well that's actually a good point, looking a 2d images of the real world works our eyes in different ways too, but we're trained from birth at that now. remember people used to say stuff like 'don't watch too much tv or your eyes will hurt'.

i can stare at a computer screen all day every day.

This seems poignant. Even if the problem comes from having to constantly refocus your eyes, training those muscles will still decrease eye strain. The only question is, is going through this much trouble worth it? For one, consumers the world over are still somewhat resistant to 3D in general. On the other hand, we're gamers. We're used to playing and practicing until we get better at something.

And even i am moderately surprised
Okay - given the differences between a gang of us and our Surechigai experiences i'm inclined to thing there maybe some sort of mild glitch.

I'm at 50 Mii friends, another friend who travels on the Yamanote line has 0 after doing it every day (even though we do a vaguely similar route), Jonnyram has less than i do by a margin...

to top it off - i bought my wife a 3DS tonight and set it up exactly as mine is set. The two 3DS's fail to see each other in surechigai mode - they simply don't connect. We did see each other in "add friends close by" mode for the friend list so it begs the question of whether there is something up with the surechigai mode?

I'll try and take the two units on the same walk tomorrow and see if my unit gets hits whilst hers doesn't. It's a fairly big thing this unfortunately - it's been one of the aspects of the 3DS that i think has the most potential and , software fault or not, if the wifes unit isn't reacting then it's going back.

I know this might seem trivial to people who don't have the unit but i think it's a fairly major issue if one of the key functions is botched.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
yes, that was my first thought - that the fact mine was updated and hers wasn't meant that the two weren't connecting.

But i've done it and still no dice.

Sorry my lack of knowledge .... but ... Sonic drift 2 ? Why not the first one ? Or was it a Master System game ?

Both Sonic Drift titles were GG games with no SMS equivalent, although the 2nd one was released worldwide, as 1 was Japan-only (aside from its inclusion on a few recent Sega compilations). 2 is basically just 1 with more characters and better track variety.

It's decent as 8-bit kart racers go IMO, but lots of people don't seem to like it.

Anybody find out what was in the SSFIV spotpass? My Japanese is suspect, so I don't know what the message says. :(

The new one or the one before?

I never owned one either, Which is why I am really hyped :)
You'll have to join me in the WHY THE DS ROCKS GAME RECOMMENDATIONS thread over the next few months.

There's at least 10 DS games I honestly intend to buy as it is.

I grabbed one of the black 3DS systems with absolutely no other games. I'm just not interested in what they have to offer right now. At the end of the month Dead or Alive comes out, but other than that, there's nothing that's even remotely interesting. It's a pitiful launch, but as always I picked up a system for the potential it has.
