Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

All I want is Virtual Boy Wario Land.

All Nintendo have to do is code an emulator (probably already done), and shove it on as a download. Done. No effort at all, and straight away you'll have one of the best platformers ever, which will be brand new to 99% of the people playing it.

And I'm not exaggerating with that claim about being one of the best platforming games ever. It's absolutely incredible.

Jeremy Parish to the rescue? From his twitter feed:

Just had a great, energetic interview with 3DS designer Hideki Konno (& I put a bug in his ear to get Wario Land VB on 3DS Virtual Console.)

Wario Land VB wasn't the only great Virtual Boy game. Teleroboxer was an awesome Punch Out clone, with fists coming right at your face! And Jack Bros., while not really the best use of 3D, was a fun game with great music. Finally, Galactic Pinball was a pretty good video pinball game with decent 3D effects,

Man, I'm not sure I liked Kid Icarus. The control scheme just feels uncomfortable. I can't tell if it was just the rig they were using to connect it to the table that prevented me from holding it differently, but man trying to move with the analog and aim with the stylus really started to cramp my left hand after a bit. None of the other games made me feel uncomfortable playing it.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. Since the entire bottom panel comes off as a battery cover, I wonder if they could make a high capacity battery that attaches in place of the stock battery cover, making the system a little thicker, but allowing for longer battery life.
I rather wish that Nintendo had done this, and since the battery would no longer have been in the way, given us a second analog slider.

Did you try your thumb?

hi,
does anyone know how region locking works on a hand held from an australian point of view? is it going to be regional partitions like with dvds- with australia and nz being a neglected and overpriced backwater or is possible that australian machines might be compatible with greater asian or even european 3dseses

It's a PAL device. All euro games will also work

From what I understand, Europe NZ and Australia are all one region.

I forget which podcasrt it was (either Giant Bomb or Weekend Confirmed) but one of them was describing it and basically said it would unplayable for anyone who is left handed. After that any potential in me picking it up went down the drain. Sucks because I was so happy to see the game coming out so soon.

It depends on skilled you are at accurately pointing at things with the stylus in your right hand, or using some other method (the old thumb-shoe Nintendo used to include in DS Phats would seem perfect)

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Oh goody I'm at home all day tomorrow, will be cool to see a SpotPass update!

Any sites done a cost breakdown on the JP hardware yet? I'm curious how much Nintendo fisting off this thing.

Not as much as you might think, I'm willing to bet.
They increased the price based off of E3 reactions. I'm betting they could have sold this for $200 and still made a profit.

I really think that Nintendo needs to release a thumb strap thing again. That was amazing for a FPS/Mario 64. I know that I'll be getting that damned hand cramp from playin Kid Icarus so hopefully I can get my hands on a thumb strap or somethin before it comes out.

They are making a shit ton. They were already making a shit ton on DS, and they kept putting the price up every iteration. You really think they're gonna be counting pennies with 3DS?

I'm using the strap from my launch phat on my DSi and it will be moved to the 3DS next.

That screen is expensive piece of kit is all I'm saying. There's a lot of other stuff crammed in there too. I know they're making a pretty penny but I don't think that they're making as much as people think they are, that's all.

I've only charged it 3 times since getting it on Tuesday, it's on it's forth charge now (wasn't anywhere near dead though).

Lots of Pokemon, SSFIV3D and Ridge Racer and general demo-ing of AR Cards and what not.

My guess would be $100-$150 per unit. I think cost on iPhones and high end droids are usually estimated in the $150-$200 range. I don't see how the 3DS could even approach that figure unless Sharp is just gouging them on the screen.

You've got to remember that those are just part costs.

They don't include the price of manufacturing the parts themselves, or actually putting the unit together. Nintendo is also using custom silicon for this, and that's never cheap either.

The thought of great 3D Virtua Boy games like Wario Land Virtua Boy makes me realize the Virtua Boy was way ahead of it's time.

We have a small preview of it with the 3DS.

But I think Nintendo's next home console will feature virtual reality. Now that they did 3D and they did motion, there is no where else for Nintendo to do for the next step to really make it immersive, other than virtual reality. That has been Iwata's dream since the Virtua Boy. And Nintendo works hard to make it's dreams come true. They've also been sinking billions of dollars into R & D each year, and I can think of nothing else that would command that kind of budget.

Nintendo still sells the old "thumbstraps" in their online store ( http://store.nintendo.com ) as a "Wrist Strap" for 3.95 + shipping.
(Go to Parts & Accessories, Manuals > Nintendo DS > Original Style Nintendo DS > Parts & Accessories > Wrist Strap )

Now, if only they still had some stands for Virtual Boy. Sigh.

lol the entire VB library in America was 10 or 12 games. Nintendo would probably release 1 game every year on the VC if they ever did release VB games on the 3DS VC. You know how much they like to spread out releasing items on the VC

I'd like to see Space Invaders: Virtual Collection released in some form on 3DS (preferrably in color). Granted, it's just Space Invaders at an *angle*, but still.

Footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bFkNMlCKcs

As for VB Wario Land, I played the crap out of that on my Virtual Boy. I think I 100%'d it, too. Quite a fun platformer. One of the better ones Nintendo has made (I could never get into other Wario platformers). I showed the game to my wife and she thought it was kinda neat, but we don't have a stand for my VB. So it just sat on her face for the few minutes she played. After that, I went to test my Virtual Boy and it got the notorious glitchy meltdown in one eye...and it wasn't in stereo anymore. Sigh.

I preordered a black 3ds, but man blue is looking nice...
dunno if I should switch.

Don't worry, blue is less nice in real life. Black all the way. Black looks classy and while the top lid of the blue looks great, the bottom colour ruins it.

What are the screens like in comparison with the DS lite?

I ask because I found the DS lite screen to be just the little bit too small for me, it put me off DS playing sometimes.

Just a guess but the 3DS looks like the screen would be exactly the same size as the DS lite when it is in DS mode.

Maybe the brightness of the screen would make a difference.

Both screens are bigger than the DS Lite's, both resolution and size-wise.

It's apparently the brightest Nintendo handheld since the Micro.

At this point, STILL, the closest to any sort of real battery life test has been donkey of neoGAF - who got 5 hours and 15 minutes at low brightness, with 45 minutes wifi and "some 3D slider play."

Still waiting for some enterprising game website to do a real world test >:/

What are we defining as "real-world"? Mid-brightness with periodic street mode and wi-fi on half the time? Somebody should just test all the different combinations of features.

Well, a real world test just means you standardize the test perimeters and then repeat it with different games to see the average.

Those test perimeters would be something like 1 hour wifi play, 3D on for 50% of the time, etc. You'd probably run a concurrent test where you didn't use 3D at all and another where you didn't use wifi at all. I'm not setting the test but it would be some variable of that.
