If you read the full thing he talks about how awesome the 3DS is, without the 3D, about how it is a worthy upgrade even for people who can't/won't use the 3D.

...seems to me like he might be doing Nintendo a favor. Most other 3D headache stories aren't going to go any further than the headaches.
 
okay i took a couple but i'm not sure how they'll look on youtube, uploading now.

i am pretty bad at the game and i let a goal in at one point when i noticed that the overhead light was reflecting in the screen, so don't get your hopes up! you should get the idea though.

Victory! I have my first cat! I had to take my stupid dog to some contest every day to get enough money, but now it's done! I can finally throw him in a river. Watching them share a bowl of milk for the first time was very cute. Can't wait to get more cats to see their interactions :)
BTW, except for AR games, I always play with the 3D on and the slider at the highest setting. That's where the magic is :)

What will they call the other colors?

Aqua Blue
Cosmos Black
...?

They need names descriptive of spansive, indefinite areas (preferably indicative of a gradual depth) rather than similarly colored physical objects.

Sunrise Orange and
Sunset Purple seem kinda obvious...

Red?
Green?
Grey/Silver?

People are just know noticing how awesome the orange 3DS was? I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Easily the best color of the bunch. Sadly I'm not buying DD stuff so I can trade in black 3ds as soon as orange gets released. I had to make the some decision with the XL in regards to the 3DS arrival(before they mentioned being able to transfer)

It would be nice to get some confirmation in regards to transferring data from one 3DS to another.

They've said that 3DS-3DS transfer is coming, but it sounds like it'll be after the May update.
 
Alright, I'm going to be on the road this weekend for about 8 hours total. Is there a good podcast I can download to eat up some of that time that goes over the 3DS after getting their hands on one from this launch?

no it's FUD and you're daft if you stop giving yourself a headache in order to magically in some undefined future point maybe be able to see it without eye rape (or color degredation, or performance reduction or viewing angle shittery) in the name of gimmickry

people just can't comprehend the simple fact that this 3D tech has a lot of problems. But what's worse, the rejection of 3D is automatically interpreted as a troll or as "whining" or even a trashing of the 3DS itself. Yet as you read in this article, it's glowing about the 3DS. Like me, I find the 3DS interesting for reasons unrelated to the shit 3D. So does he. He's extremely positive about the platform and yet responses to the article are as unintelligent as one would expect from fanboys - ignoring the content, falling prey to gut reaction. People need to stop acting as if people's honest experience with the 3D is somehow a rejection of 3DS itself.
 
Ashcraft wrote the article I was predicting would turn up sometime briefly after the 3DS launch. It was going to happen sooner or later. His is one of the first from a major gaming site/publication, and it won't be the last.

*shrugs, moves on*. My eyes are perfect, and they can withstand years of 3D without strain. I'm just better than most people.
 
In the end, the value of 3D will totally be dependent on the content. There's little doubt on my mind when Nintendo releases Mario 3DS for example, that the 3D functionality will be great. But for some games, and who knows, maybe even MOST games it will be better to have it off. Not because of any headache bullshit, that obviously differs from person to person but because it just doesn't add as much as it takes away.

But yeah I think it will heavily depend on content. My only beef with an opinion like Amirox's is that although you may not be saying this it certainly sounds like you're saying 3D is terrible and always will be and games will always be better without it. Actually I think you did say that =p

The type of autostereoscopic 3D included in the 3DS will always be shit - 3D itself is just a technology that is neither good or bad. It just needs the proper technology to propel it, one not restrained by viewing angle issues or color degradation or, as is the case here, a underpowered platform that forces developers to either downgrade the visuals for parity or force one mode to clearly perform better than the other. Or provide the sort of common eye strain/headaches that has been widely reported from all corners.

One day, there will be a 3D technology that meets the criteria, and then we won't be having this discussion. Then I'll be using it too.

The important point here is that saying "autostereoscopic 3D is shit" is not the same as saying "The Nintendo 3DS is shit", which is what the fanboy masses are clearly reacting like in this topic and elsewhere. The Nintendo 3DS damn well better have merits beyond that gimmick, and by all accounts it does. I wouldn't be buying it if it didn't.

This is so true. The 3D right now is a gimmick as it really isn't add much to he games now other than sort of a neat wow factor of 3D. It's not like in any of the games I'm using the 3D to judge the depth or anything. As much as the 3D impressed me on the system, two days later now reflecting back on it, I can see it getting old and not being used to save battery life and increase performance. There are other cool things about the 3DS that make it compelling but in the end, right now, the 3D really is a gimmick.

Surely the 'fix' for this can never exist? Given the system is rendering two distinct images, that's always going to take more power than rendering one. And if they boost the power so the system can render two in the same time it takes to render one, some devs are just going to increase the image complexity so exactly the same problem occurs again.

Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with SSF4. Nintendo deliberately made the system powerful enough to render 60fps 3D images for the game fidelity level they were expecting people to aim for, and Capcom immediately pitched their intentions beyond that.

Can you give us any details about the cats? Do they have different breeds like the dogs (tabby, siamese etc.), or are they presented generically? Can you do all the exact same things with cats that you do with dogs, or are cats essentially toys for your dog?
 
So we've seen MPOs split to its component JPEGs for viewing online; what's the best tool for doing the reverse, since it sounds like 3DS accepts external MPOs alright?

Also, what sort of screws does 3DS use? Most Nintendo stuff used to use the tri-wing screws, but that wasn't the case with DSi.

Hard to explain. It's the same technique as for magic eye images, but the explanations given for those never helped me either. I just unfocus my eyes on command. From my point of view it will then seem like what my right eye sees is slowly floating left. When the images are appropriately overlapping my eye snaps to it and can hold there.

I've just taken some images of my eyes in "regular" and "parallel viewing" modes with the DSi camera. Mirrored them (to correct the mirroring DSi does with the inside camera) and cropped. Top is regular, bottom is parallel. You can see my left eye continues to look straight, while my right eye looks off at an angle. I admit, I occasionally do this just to weird unsuspecting people out.

If you can train the cat to do what you tell it, the game isn't realistic enough.
