Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

Oh right I forgot that LPotC is a Wii port. Considering that, it makes no sense that the 3DS could run that game at 60fps and LSW 3D only at 30fps if it is a PSP port.

The PSP is more powerful than the Wii confirmed?

That would be truly something original if the screen is darker and less vibrant OFF 3D. I've never seen that be the case in any 3D technology to date; not even the Fujifilm 3D camera. It's the other way around, so this is fascinating to me. Color degradation exists when 3D is

Thanks for the answer!

I need to not GAF when I'm about to pass out for sleep, thinking error I mean to post the other way around, I can literally see a darkness layer and colors fade out when flipping to the 3d side.

I'm curious about you constantly bringing up colour degradation Amir0x. Are you still talking about 3DS, or 3D in general? I know you get colour issues at the cinema, but I thought the 3DS wouldn't be affected by that? The parallax barrier is just there to block the image from reaching the wrong eye, no polarisation going on, or is there?

If not to gauge depth and distance, then what do you mean in a meaningful way Amirox? Like a Japanese dating sim that helps you better appreciate your date's assets?

I used an example in my post. Here is a video. It's a COMPLETELY different type of 3D from autostereoscopic 3D (one that causes no eye strain, wink wink). Actually, the 3DS (and NGP now) can do this too with its camera no problem. But, this is an example of a type of gameplay that is benefiting from added dimensionality. In the future, for the type of 3D possibilities to really open up, we're going to require a platform which does not have these severe viewing angle problems and causes all this mass eye strain or color degradation or limits the control possibilities (motion gaming is cut off almost entirely when utilizing the autostereoscopic 3D on 3DS). Indeed, when developers feel secure enough to not REQUIRE a slider (except for those who are literally stereo-blind), then we will be there to see developers really make a meaningful 3D game.

Gameplay that exists only possible in 3D, not really remote, incremental improvements that are so thin it barely matters at all. The distance judging thing is so tiny a difference in terms of its impact to any skilled gamer (I have never had trouble judging distance in any game) that it barely registers beyond the importance of a rumble pack.

3D itself is just a concept. It needs the right technology to deliver it into the hands of gamers in a compelling way in terms of gameplay possibilities. I do not believe this specific level of auto stereoscopic 3D is there yet, but certainly a more advanced version of this tech (like that tv that has wide viewing angle for autostereoscopic 3D, which could eventually be applied to handhelds) will eventually make the strides to get there.

People were saying that, but the Fujifilm camera is definitely impacted by noticeable color degradation issues in 3D, and I've read several reviews of 3DS (CVG's review mentions it briefly) of the issue existing on 3DS too. I haven't used the 3DS yet, but I can't imagine it wouldn't also exist there. I am very anal about that sort of thing, so, it might not be a significant issue to someone else.

Hey 3DS owners, what's the best carrying case, do you think?

I want one that can carry the console + the charger, preferably.
I wanted to ask this as well. I'm looking at the Pull and GO Folio [$17.99]

But I don't know if this is out in other countries.

Stereoscopic 3D in itself is almost entirely a visual improvement. I think of it as a form of graphical upgrade, and when I see the effects myself on 3DS I expect a reaction akin to the first time I played SMW and was taken aback by its parallax layers. But as gameplay goes, it's more of a tricky situation. I'm not expecting 3D games to get something like Ouendan that turns a gimmicky feature into a brilliant gameplay device that can't be mimicked. I just think it would take a heck of a lot more creativity to come up with a game that wouldn't be playable without steroscopic 3D, and even then, apparently Nintendo would force them to add a 2D mode.

As for those who don't want the 3D, I honestly think you should be thankful, because if you seriously think all these games would be 60fps if there were no 3D or 3D slider then you're kidding yourself. Over the years one thing that's been consistent in handheld/console gaming is so many developers pushing their games to do as much as possible, even at the risk of added slowdown or lower framerates. But now they're targeting it for 3D, so in many cases the people who opt to switch 3D off are going to be getting a slightly-less-pretty but smoother experience than they would have if the 3D screen weren't a feature at all.

That's not 3D at all. That's just automated camera control. It looks no more 3D then panning the camera in any other polygonal game would.

It does provide the illusion of three dimensional space though, and has actual gameplay implications.

Odd, my SSFIV Spotpass notice only arrived today. Anyways redeemed the code and now I have 3 level 7 figures: Akuma, Fei Long, and Blanka.

Yup, same charger

It actually doesn't. It just looks like it's 3D because it's embedded within a 2D image and therefore you depth perception is all fucked and you can't tell the difference between what's actually 3D and what's just a 2D image drawn with the "correct" perspective. If you saw it in person, it wouldn't look 3D at all.

Also funnily enough, the gameplay only works because the image is 2D. 3D would actually break the gameplay, since the whole point of the game is to get the parallax layers to line up just right so you see cohesive "letters". Adding depth would prevent those letters from being cohesive.

I kind of want Ami to get the 3DS, and take pictures of snapping off the 3D Slider.
...But then that would be damaging the system, and that's just sick...

Wow that does look really cool. I hope steel diver has an effect like that where you can tilt the screen to see around objects and what not.

Thanks for the video.

Man, you must be really uncomfortable with those "Smash My..." videos, eh?

Speaking of which, some kids were running around the mall where I preordered Black and White the other day and they had an old out-of-warranty 360 red ring with them, with a cleverly cut box so when they tripped it would go flying out and smash into the ground, much to the horror of anyone nearby.

At one point they must have had a crowd of like thirty or forty people.

Yes, they both use the WAP-002. Same charger.

The Folio is also available in Black.

Oh... kay. Well I don't want to carry it around naked as it might get damaged somehow, I'd rather have some form of protection for it. I also need a better way to carry multiple games. What do you suggest?

Hm, you live only once. Enjoy your devices! Just store your 3DS naked. I don't understand people putting a nasty rubber case around their iPhone either.. why? You paid a price for beautiful design.

I use a simple black sleeve for my PSP, and that is all it needs because it has an open screen. Your 3DS will be fine naked.

Haha, I edited my post at the same time you posted lol. How do you store your DS games when you travel? I can't keep putting them in my pocket or my bag...

Or just stick all of your expensive devices in your tighty whities. About as safe as you can get since no one will ever get into it.

Either you've got a lot of money or you're crazy. Maybe both.

I like to protect my investment.

Or like 10 comfortably in a plastic sandwich bag (obviously you could fit more, but not without it getting too bulky.

Which is pretty much what Im going to do, games in a bag, and games and 3DS in my Club Nintendo pouch thing

The strongest material known to the universe!
Nintendium!
Even then, man. No way. Who knows, right?

I keep everything in special-made cases. No bouncing games here, no sir.

Maybe it's just how my mom was obsessive-compulsive about keeping our games in their cases and our stuff in pristine condition when I was growing up.

I mean, I've got to thank her for it, I've got pretty much every console/handheld from the NES up with a dozen or so games for each in perfect working condition.

It would take a lot for the metal bars on a DS Card to go bad.
You'd have to expose it to a lot of moisture or heat.
Even then, people have put it through the wash and they've worked.

Only ever seen one defective DS game come through at work in the several years I've been there.

The contacts had bite marks.

Yeesh. I'd probably be sick if I put one of my games through the wash. I don't understand how people can be so careless with this stuff. It ain't cheap, Nintendium or not.

I thought that ruined the shoulder buttons.

Yeah.. shoulder buttons got a little dirty (DSLite) but yeah. Nothing worth crying about, in the end my DSLite fell in the toilet because the washing machine it was on was vibrating so much. : (

Maybe if it was in a rubber case it would've floated!

No, like ruined as in stopped working completely.

Old DSL cases would probably work for the console but any with game cartridge storage slots most likely won't accommodate the newer 3DS carts because of the nub.

Project Design generally has quality stuff, although their current selection of 3DS airform cases looks rather tacky. I bought a really nice PSP case from them which has worked wonderfully for several long-distance trips.

You could always go to Play-Asia for the usual Keys Factory or Hori stuff. This is a link for the three Hori 3DS soft cases since Amazon.com only has black at the moment. If you want to use Amazon, you can find the black and blue hard airform cases there as well as the black soft one.

I think hard cases are probably better for traveling and storage. You could use a sock or some simple sleeve to prevent scratching, but only the hard stuff has a chance at protecting from serious falls or being squashed or something. There's probably many other cases out there (silicone, snap, etc.); it just depends on what you want. The previously mentioned Pull and Go Folio would have to suffice if storing a charger or larger amount of games is part of your criteria. It just depends on your own personal needs. A clamshell design is already enough for some people. =\

Oh I have seen that Hori one. What worries me about that one is in the Amazon pic, it looks like there could be with items in the top of the case against the top of the 3DS.

I've been eyeballing the Executive case and the Mini Elite Transporter. I really wish I could get something like my one for the DS that I got free from Nintendo at E3.
