[Nintendo Direct 6/21] Super Smash Bros 4 a collaboration w/ Sora & Namco Bandi Games

Namco? Seriously?

The SSB series used to be so respected, as one of Nintendo's premiere titles. Nowadays, it's treated about with about as much dignity as Star Fox.

It's sad to see the series fall so far from grace. Thankfully, Brawl helped kill most of my interest, so I suppose it's okay.

Wait.... is the guy who worked on the Gundam VS series working on this? If so then count me in! YES!

Oh, I'm serious, sir. Deadly serious.

I'm not a fan of Nintendo outsourcing their flagship games to third party developers. Especially ones like Scamco.

Sakurai is still in charge and this means we're likely to see it sooner than expected.

Not only that, but having a crew that already works under the same banner, know one another and what they are capable of sounds a lot better than the "band of mercenaries" development team cobbled together for Brawl.

I'll say what others have said. Needs Tales characters. Very excited for this as long as it's still Smash Bros. and more Melee then Brawl.

Won't happen, Sakurai has discussed this in the past.

http://www.destructoid.com/gdc-08-masahiro-sakurai-talks-brawl-development-71767.phtml

In terms of his criteria for characters to be included in the game, Sakurai said that to merit inclusion, characters had to stand out, and do something that only that character can do. Additionally, new additions to the roster had to improve the balance of series representation -- you don't want half of the roster from the Mario series, or Zelda. The developer put an additional emphasis on individuality. "Clarifying the concept early on of what a character can do was very important," he said.

A Tales character would essentially be a Fire Emblem character clone. So that's out.

hmmm wonder which namco cast(s) will appear.

What is the face of namco these days, pacman seems right, but he's not... much of a fighter?

I'm picturing yoshimitsu as being a well fit. Up+B his helicopter thing? And isn't he like in every namco fighter already?

I remembered someone linked Wolf's Victory pose and Loser poser from Star Fox Assault, so I assumed that Namco helped Nintendo to make that game.

It's their chance to correct Wolf's Victory and Losing pose.

Where did I say I'm opposed to the idea of Nintendo making a sequel to SSB?

Was not accusing you of such, you misread. I was saying it's a good idea for a sequel especially since Sakurai is trying to find a balance for casual and hardcore. I don't see how it's outsourcing if it's a collaboration, and if this was a complete outsource, this is probably one of the best companies they could get to do so. "Scamco" and DLC practices aside, like TruePrime said they have Gundam VS, Tekken, and Soul Calibur staff helping on this, this is anything but a bad thing. Plus I doubt Nintendo will allow them to go crazy with DLC, and even then stuff like Tekken Tag 2 seems like some parts of Namco get it.

Just add Yuri from Vesperia. Good to go.

Given Sakurai's stance it seems very unlikely it will be more then a select few. He was pretty adament that the 3rd Parties stay limited and not be the main draw.

I really doubt that will change, and just because Namco is deving I doubt they get many more then anyone else, hell Gamearts did the grunt work for Brawl and it's not like we got Alex and Hiiro.

It would make far more sense to have Lloyd, since he's been on a Nintendo system before, and was in a pretty popular game in the west.

Oh, my choice wasn't based on sensibility or anything of the sort. If anything I do agree that Lloyd might be the face of series here in the West but I still would rather have Yuri than Lloyd.

Well Yuri will be when Project X ships later this year.

I do think Nintendo would want Llyod though over Yuri given they didn't get either Ves or Ves 2.

Twist: They decided to go with Absel from ToG?

He'd fit well (see Narikiri Dungeon X for how he feels in a 2D game), but it'd be kinda weird considering it only came out on PS3 in English speaking territories.

But I think Pacman or a Tekken character (Kazuya or maybe Harada himself like in SC5 :lol)would fit best before any Tales character. Cless or Lloyd is a maybe but I doubt it.

I just hope they don't drop the guest characters from Brawl.

I don't see why they would.

Sonic does very well on Nintendo platforms and this will only help that. Sega and Nintendo are still close.

Sakurai is probably still friends with Kojima and even if Kojima never really bothers with Nintendo's platforms they still recently had Snake Eater on 3DS.

This could go horribly wrong... soooo fucking wrong
I can already see how the game will have less production value than the others in the series and how it will be filled with crap characters and stuff from scamco... the only bright side would be a good gameplay for the competitive scene

fuck this shit why not stick with the tradition? Other franchises needs to be outsourced/reinvented

Why do think it would be overloaded with Namco stuff?

This is still a Sakurai game, this is still Smash Bros 4.

They didn't announce NintendoXNamco.

Want King of all Cosmos, Dig Dug, Mr. Driller, Pac-Man and Klonoa. Hope this collaboration works out, not passing any sort of judgement at this point.

Because it's codeveloped with Namco?
Nintendo will beg to have more characters possible in Smash not only from namco and they will sure use this opportunity to throw all their stuff

Not likely.

Sakurai has said time and again that 3rd Party stuff is going to stay at a minimum. Not only that but we didn't get ANYTHING, no Grandai/Lunar/Ect from when Gamearts did the grunt work of Brawl.

There is zero reason to think the game will be anymore loaded then Brawl was with the Sonic cameo's and Konami with MGS stuff. It would really take Sakurai completely changing everything he has said up until this point.

What a bad post. This is exactly why they have been doing this: They need more development power and people already used to HD. What "tradition" anyway? Brawl was already handled by a team built specifically for it, based on Games Art. The best people from Bandai Namco can't be bad, and Sakurai is still the director after all.

Why are people acting like Nintendo just handed Namco the SSB name and licenses and walked away?

Just having a low exception with SSB4 then we should be fine. Two articles/announcement already killed my hype, so it will make waiting less painful for me.

Edited: At long, they didn't change Smash engine then I'm okay with it. However, they could screw it up, just like Team Ninja and Metroid.

Guys, Sakurai is still the boss here. He will break knee-caps and upend tables to get this game how he wants it and knows it should be.

I trust the man as much as I trust he's chugged a gallon of water from the Fountain of Eternal Youth.

Look at him, you know he has.

Seems to me like the next iteration of this series is going to take it even further from its roots, but it's going to be interesting to see what becomes of it, for sure.

Project Sora isn't huge, and increasing the dev team from the outside is something that needed to be done.

They still have Sora/Nintendo in charge, it's not like Namco can do whatever they want.

I guess. And given the pedigree involved, I'd be super amped if this were a collaboration for a new IP.

I just fear Smash won't quite be Smash anymore, and it'll be filled with even more non-Nintendo characters.

Really unsure how I feel about this, but I guess I'm mostly optimistic. Can't be worse than Brawl.

And SCV's netcode was good. So if Namco's at the helm, maybe online won't be a complete trainwreck this time.

Not really crazy about any potential guess characters that Namco could offer though.
