Shockingly logical release given the NFL season starting tomorrow night. It's upgrade eligible, right?
Yeah, it's on Wii VC as well so it should be eligible for upgrading (assuming you bought the NES version, as the Arcade version was also released on Wii VC).

I'm curious on Star Sky, myself. It looks like something nobody on GAF would play, but I'm kind of a sucker for "Make choices, get a different ending" type of games. It's like a visual novel... but without any text.

Have you two played Spirit Tracks? It's really good! And more so coming after Phantom Hourglass, which I felt was a bit lackluster. ST is an improvement all around, specially in the dungeon design and the music, the weakest parts of PH for me, by far. It's also got some pretty unique stuff to it. It's sad that so many people talk down on it after everyone decided that Phantom Hourglass is the worst.

Jen has, and loved it. I've only played a little bit but I hadn't played more than a little bit--or maybe none at all, can't recall--of PH, so I figure that's part of the reason I couldn't get into it when I tried it. Plus I was just a snob about motion controls a bit. Eh, stylus controls. Motion controls. Same idea, really. So I'm definitely looking forward to playing it after PH!

Woah he was playing on a gameboy in the N64 games? What was it changed to in the non Nintendo re-releases?

As mentioned above, it was indeed a GB, but I only used it there to respond to BearChair. Because this was a picture of a Bear in a Chair.

If you ever want to try those out again, I'll be happy to help! I love those games.

Thanks, I will definitely keep that in mind! I appreciate it. As a fan of Zelda II, have you played Elliot Quest at all?

By the way, you rrrreally chose the wrong Metroid game to pick on in front of me and Maxcriden, GAF's biggest Metroid 2 fans XD

Yo yo yo Max! dis here mr.donnysomenumbers be poppin' off down on our straight-up GameBoy game Metroid Da Second. what is we gointa do bout that? *knucklez be cracking yo*

To me, Metroid games are supposed to be the realization of the joy of exploration in game form. Metroid II requires basically zero back-tracking if you're thorough on each level as you progress. Therefore, it falls short of the goal of a Metroid game from my perspective. The story is critical as it leads into the pinnacle of Metroid games in Super Metroid, but the game itself, even though I like it as a game, just doesn't cut it as a Metroid game. Even Other M required some back-tracking to get 100% and see the real ending (real ending was worth it!). That game wasn't so bad once you got past all the ridiculous restrictions and could just use your powers anywhere to explore.

Man, this stuff is fluid. For example, as a measure of a good game, Metroid II > Other M to me. As a measure of what a Metroid game should be, Other M > Metroid II to me. Point-of-view changes a lot! :lol

I see what you mean, Donny. I'm with KYB in that M2 is an under-appreciated entry in the franchise. For me, it actually was the entry in the series that I played where it was easiest to get lost. The lack of color really threw me. I found it wonderfully isolating and endlessly confusing to try to keep track of barely distinct areas. So despite its technical linearity, in terms of how easy it was to get lost it felt more nonlinear to me than it actually may have been. The music was understated and eerie. I dunno, something about that game just really sent a compelling chill down my spine.

I tried Metroid I and Super Metroid after. Both were pretty good but even by Super Metroid I felt like the designs being brought into more modern graphics made for grossier, creepier bosses and I found that unappealing. By the time I got around to trying out Metroid Prime again (I'd played part of it when it first came out, as well as part or all of Fusion, can't recall), and this was like a couple years ago nearly at this point, I felt like...Metroid was not for me anymore. I didn't like shooting Sheegoths. Seemed too violent and grimy for me. I never liked the fanservice of Metroid, and I still don't, but it's just the griminess that put me off in particular. I'd like to see Metroid with a cleaner and less horror-esque look. I dunno. I'm sure that's heresy to a lot of Metroid fans. I just want the isolation and exploration (the latter of which I know you said you like, too!) without the creepy bosses and the more and more grimy and real-seeming fights. It seemed like it was only a stone's throw away from being a kind of FPS or other violent/shooting game I don't really care for.

Edit: Poncho doesn't list a price. I wonder if it's getting a last minute delay.

Poncho delay wouldn't surprise me. Release seemed weirdly out of nowhere.

No. Do you think it would be something I might enjoy? I don't know too much to be honest. I'll have to look it up later.

I think as a fan of Zelda II you would absolutely adore it, especially since the patch about to be released to fix the last of the mooostly minor glitches that have been popping up like a game of whac-a-mole. But yeah we've put probably a couple dozen or more hours into it and are massive fans of the game. I'm in mobile at the moment but search this thread for Elliot Quest and you will see me raving about it a couple weeks ago. Oh. Might be August thread actually.

Did anyone, ever actually ask for Tecmo Bowl or that Mario basketball game for the VC?
Well, Tecmo Bowl is a classic, so yes, a lot of people probably did! ^^
That's not really how Virtual Console should be approached, anyway. Ideally, every game for every console represented in the service should one day be available on Virtual Console, even if that's now an obvious, complete impossibility. I know that is hard to assume when there's other games we want to see released before these, but it's the way it should be. Also, whether too many people asked for them or not, every classic game has the potential to be someone's favorite game or of at least awakening some nostalgia in someone who will likely be glad to buy it. These two games in particular are a beloved classic and a pretty nice, unique game, so they are guaranteed to sell well.

Take Maxcriden's word on this one for sure, Elliot Quest is pretty cool. It takes a lot of inspiration from Zelda 2, Faxanadu, Wonder Boy and other such sidescroller RPGs from that era, while still managing to be relevant on its own and not be a redundant product of nostalgia alone. Check it out when the next patch is released, it's worth it if you like these kind of games.
(Heh, I just noticed your name. I'm more of a Turin Turambar fan myself, but Beren definitely gets a lot of respect from me *thumbs up* )

Tecmo Bowl has kind of a legendary following.

I mean really, does anyone even want Super Mario Bros. 3? It's like asking that.

My favorite was when some fools got all riled up cause Vegas Stakes for SNES (By HAL Laboratory) was coming to Wii U VC. Which btw is an awesome Casino/Gambling game.

That is actually a sequel to their NES game, Vegas Dream. I wonder if that game will ever come to VC. Wasn't even released on Wii VC.

I have Mario Basketball on DS, and it was very frustrating on the higher levels. I'm not even sure if I finished it. From that perspective, having a save state version may actually be interesting, but since I didn't exactly love it to begin with, more likely to just skip it. Might be some people out there who liked tapping the screen to dribble, though!

Hell, even back then in Cuba, where we only had a fake semblance of a slight idea of what American Football might me like, Tecmo Bowl was still pretty goddamn big among NES owners and their friends and neighbors.

Always good to see another Silmarillion fan! I connect with Beren for a couple of reasons (luckily not the one-hand part), and I definitely wanted a reference to the book. Seemed like a good fit.

Ha! You're making me look at my own name with pity. I knew I should have picked something cooler! Anyway, I devoured The Silmarillion in my early teens and went on through Unfinished Tales, The Children of Hurin, Roverandom, Tales form The Perilous Realm, that Tom Bombadil poem that I can't believe I can't remember the name of, a biography of Tolkien, anything I was lucky enough to get my hands on! I've actually been reading through Edmond Dantès's off-topic threads about The Silmarillion these past couple of days. There's some really interesting stuff in there that's made me want to read the book again. It's been like fifteen years so it's about damn time!

end of fanboy rant! Sorry for the offtopicness! ^^u

Awesome game, one of or the best usees of the GamePad, nice, creepy atmosphere, good puzzles. Totally recommended. I think the devs are even developing more content.

My pleasure! Our pleasure, in fact. KYB has given me permission to speak for him. He also wanted me to tell you he likes your trunk.

BTW, can't find that post I was talking about. Maybe I was confusing a post I wrote about Scram Kitty. I praise those two a lot so it's possible I got mixed up. Anyway, here are some earlier impressions I wrote several months ago, and rest assured patch hiccups aside our opinion of the game has only improved immensely:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=159584308&postcount=41

I can confirm that PONCHO is not coming out today since I did an interview with one of the guys developing the game.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks Shard! I can't mp3 it up at work, did they give a release window at all?

New eShop charts 9/10/15:

Wii U

Software

1. Runbow - incredible showing for this indie.
2. Super Mario Maker - preload is working.
3. Splatoon
4. Zelda: Ocarina of Time - it's amazing to me how successful this is on VC despite the 3DS version being available.
5. Cube Life: Island Survival - bring Minecraft to Wii U. It will clearly print money.
6. Super Mario World
7. Super Mario Maker
8. Super Mario Bros. 3
9. Shovel Knight - pre-Plague of Shadows hype? Happy to see this doing so well.
10. Sin & Punishment
11. Super Mario Bros.
12. Disney Infinity 3.0
13. Paper Mario - I bet this is a game where a lot of peeps never got to play the original due to how late in the N64's lifespan it released, or are too young to have played the first two games when they came out. Glad to see it not being missed out on.
14. DuckTales Remastered
15. Mario Golf
16. Gunman Clive HD Collection
17. Donkey Kong 64
18. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
19. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
20. Mario Kart 8

3DS

Software

1. Mario Kart 7
2. Super Mario Bros. 3 - Seeing the SMB games on both charts really wows me. People wonder why Nintendo rarely has sales on their evergreen classics but it's kind of astonishing just how well they sell on both systems.
3. Shovel Knight
4. Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
5. Smash Controller
6. Super Mario Bros.
7. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
8. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
9. Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move
10. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
11. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
12. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies
13. Animal Crossing: New Leaf
14. 3D Gunstar Heroes
15. The Legend of Zelda
16. Pokemon Omega Ruby
17. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
18. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
19. Resident Evil: Revelations
20. Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX

Vegas Stakes is awesome, I agree! Played it for the first time on Wii U, in fact.

Bring on more VC games nobody asked for! It's the entire reason I enjoy the service.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks Shard! I can't mp3 it up at work, did they give a release window at all?

Let me see, Danny said that it would be before the Winter and the game is about ready for release, console certifications are the hold up and also PONCHO most likely coming to The New 3DS once Unity is fully functional on the system.

Not a problem, probably going to be scaled back form what it is now since they were having issues getting Poncho to work on the Vita.

That is interesting. Thank you. I'm hoping the gameplay itself has been improved so that the quibbles in that preview on the prior page are no longer an issue. Looking forward to it regardless though.

Thank you L~A!

I wasn't sure for a while if I was going to try to design my own levels. I just don't think of myself as very creative. But I decided I will give it a shot even if it's not my primary reason for getting the game. Last night I was laying in bed trying to fall asleep and thinking of level names as I lulled off to (Kirby's) Dream Land.

Vegas Dream may be a rights issue. There's lots of HAL games we don't have and Dream mentions something called CBS Sony Group in the opening credits.

Vegas Stakes is also odd since it's only non-Kirby game HAL didn't selfpublish on the Virtual Consoles. HAL published Lolo 1-2 and Revenge of the Gator themselves though.

A ROM dump of an NES game that has aged like crap. Not surprising given that Super Mario Maker comes out tomorrow.

Even more to this is that Nintendo probably sees Tecmo Bowl as a supplement for a real NFL since it can't get any. Sad :(

Why take a look at these new games when you can complain about VC! It's pretty obvious they're giving the eShop titles the focus this week.

The Swindle (Curve Digital | $12.49)
Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut (Grip Digital | $7.99)
Star Sky (JMJ Interactive | $4.00)
Explody Bomb (Alkterios Games | $1.99)
Funky Physics (Petite Games | $1.99)

Shit, Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is coming to VC?

I admit it's not the greatest basketball game ever, but I put a lot of hours into that game with a friend. I've always wanted to see another stand alone sequel that had more polish and improved on some of the concepts.

Keep in mind that the ACB has ratings for VC games that have yet to come for months now. Like Wild Gunman, Medabots and Polarium Advance

Without commenting on Tecmo Bowl's quality (haven't tried it so I can't judge), I'm actually surprised they didn't go ahead and make entire September the Month of Mario or something. Given the month kicked off with Mario Golf I expect Mario stuff all the way through.

(Gimme Mario Kart 64 already Ninty)

Probably because every month is the Month of Mario in NoA's eyes.

I was going to get Tecmo Bowl since I own the Wii version, but apparently this game doesn't get the discounted price. This is the first time I've seen a VC game released without the upgrade discount. What a ripoff.

Give it a few hours, I didn't immediately get the discounted price for Sin & Punishment last week either, but next day it was there.
