Nintendo DS touchscreen: Hows it holding up?

Had my DS for only a few days now (Wario Ware and Driller Spirits) and my screen seems to be holding up pretty well. My girl even scratched at the screen with her nails in excitement over a wario mini game no problem.

How long can I expect the touch screen to look nice, and how does it compare to other touch screens? those of you with PDAs might be able to answer.

Overall Im impressed with the durability of Nintendo products and the DS seems up to quality.

About 2 weeks here, played extensively with 5 games (Mario, Wario, Driller, Feel the Magic, Band Brothers), and the touch screen is still perfect!

No scratches at all here yet. I've got through four battery charges for DS (approximately 35-36 hours put into the thing you can estimate) and not a single scratch.

I've had this baby since Sunday morning and been playing it nonstop since then. No scratches whatsoever and my girlfriend is rough with the pen even. We'll see how it holds up 3 months from now but so far it's looking good.

I like to substitute my DS stylus with an exacto knift, and I don't have a single scratch.

*is actually too poor to own a Nintendo DS*

Scratched as fuck. A word or warning - there are some minigames in Feel the Magic that involve serious rubbing. That can wear off the stylus so that it'll begin to have sharp edges and starts to scratch the screen.

Mine's a hell of a lot better than the one at the local Walmart...

Yeah, i hate people too.

i've been use my Clie pen stylus and there's no scratches on it. Every now and then, i clean the screen off with the microfiber cloth that came with my glasses. Good as new. Of course it hasn't even been a month yet. i've seen PDA screens scratched after a month or so. i debated using screen protectors, and i may still do it. With the low price of the DS (which'll get lower with time), it's likely i'd just get another DS if the screen got pretty scratched.

Mine's got about three tiny, tiny scratches, but that's because I press too damn hard on the screen like a spaz. I'll be getting one of those covers to protect it from me.

That Walmart photo is funny. My girl was jabbing at the top screen at random also until I explained that it wasnt a touchscreen.

You would think a stylus tip should be made out of hard rubber or "teflon" or something.
Im looking into picking up "Feel the Magic" so that has me a little worried...

Heed this man's advice! Look out for the stylus rather than the screen and you should be safe.

Same here. I do think I'll get some scatch guards and split them with a bud.

There seems to be an issue with the touch screens that hasn't been reported. Those of you with Sawaru! will be able to test this.

On the minigame where you're playing a shoot 'em up of sorts by moving planet Earth around, does it make a clanging sound as you sweep the planet around? It's not supposed to. It's supposed to 'clang' once as you grab hold of the planet, then be silent as you swish it around. On at least four DSs I've tried, there is a constant clanging noise that would suggest the DS touch response is flickering rather than recording a solid stroke. It makes no difference in any other DS besides Wario as far as I can tell (and I've played them all) but it also means you'll find it nigh on impossible to complete the minigame where you have to draw lines to connect the battery to the terminals.

Anyone else having this fault?

AS long as you dont tap it or rub it like a murderer it holds up fine.

That walmart pic makes me sad, people are savages.

Esp, people that shop at walmart ;)

Anyone know any GOOD screen protectors for the DS? And whats a good, more comfy stylus?
Brando just got some in. i've seen them before on PDAs. They provide a good writing surface (more important for PDAs), and reusable. Looks like i'll have to put in an order soon.

http://shop.brando.com.hk/screenprotector.php

Edit: Edited out "extremely clear". They're not. They do muddy the image a bit. There are some clearer ones out there, but they're mainly the stick-on type, and are prone to air bubbles when placing them on the screen.

It's pretty good, very clear, and the few air bubbles that get trapped when it's initially put in can easily be pushed out. Not sure if it was really needed as I haven't noticed any scratches on it yet, but better safe than sorry.

Easily and cleanly removable? I read about someone who got one that peeled off all messy and did more harm than good.

Mine is looking perfect and my 3 year old plays it. My problem is not scratches it the fact that he has a cold and wont stop sneezing on the thing.

This is exactly how the display DS at EB looks like. One Saturday morning someone grabbed and took the stylus pen right off the wire. Well, no one saw this so evey kid used the exposed wire on the touchpad. Poor DS...I try to clean her up each night but I know she is just crying...

Damn the non-hardcore! I had to instruct my girlfriend in the use of a stylus. She kept laughing at me as I explained on how to apply the proper preassure hee hee.

The good thing about Nintendo systems is that they all come with a one year warrenty. I sent my SP unit a month before my warrenty ran out and I received a brand new unit in 5 days (counting the day I took it to the repair center). Seems like I'll be doing the same with the DS.

Yeah mine has a little dark spot on the upper screen, and I'm sure it'll be scratched up by next november. Perhaps I'll have to trade at that point!

That's how some of the ones I've seen abroad are too. People must be taking needles to these things or something

Two weeks, definite sign of wear and tear. No deep scratches, but some markings visible with the screen off under certain lighting.

Just received a Hori screen protector from Play-asia, trying to get the little bugger on at the moment. Proving rather difficult, top screen went on bubble free rather easily, touchscreen is proving difficult.

Tell me how that goes, I'm eyeing that one right now.

Anyone reccomend a really good screen protector or bag for the DS while we're at it?

EDIT: Bag not bad.

Well that went like shit, bubbles everywhere. Might have to order another one, didn't really follow the instructions properly so probably my fault.

Can't you just push the bubbles out? When I first put mine on (it's the Hori one) I think I had a few bubbles, but if you just push them to the top or side of the screen they dissapear.

Now after I had it for a while I noticed that the touchscreen seems to be less clear than the top screen, and took the protector off to see if it was that or some dust inside that was doing it. Turns out it's supposed to be this way, probably something to do with the touchscreen, but when I put the protector back on it was covered in dust and cat hair!

I have no idea how the protector sticks itself onto the screen, but I'm assuming that it uses static or something, as the dust just clings to it when you take it off. The screen looked horrible as you can't push the air bubbles away when they're being held up by dust and hair. Blowing and rubbing it off with that cloth it comes with didn't do anything, and neither did running it in water, so I was getting worried that I'd have to buy a new one.

Turns out sellotape was the answer, just stick it on the underside of the protector and take it away and the dust will be attached to the tape, then you can put the protector down as before. After pushing the bubbles away again it looks fine, there's no bubbles or dirt in mine (except for very thin bubbles at the sides).

Yup I got a few scratches before I releaised it was the stylus having a sharp edge, my other one is also devolping a sharp edge now so I will probably have to buy a 3-apck for what $6.99. Target was selling them for $9.99. I know they are $6.99 at Best Buy though.

Touch screen? You mean this isn't just a GBA SP+?

GBA games are gorgeous on this thing... can't stop playing to touch any of the DS software. I do have one extremely small scratch though.

Screen's holding up fine. No scratches. A little smudgy looking when the light is off (like when I'm playing GBA) but it looks just fine when playing DS games.

Better than the haters say but worse than the Nintendo kids have said.

Good: It's held up considerably better than I expected. I've used the stylus, and I can usually wipe away the marks with a tissue or even just my shirt.

Bad: I do have some scratches, despite what some people have claimed. Even without bearing down, it does have a couple of scratches. I'm not so worried about them as I am the longevity of the screen.

Hey guys anecdotal evidence renders other anecdotal evidence moot!

I'm no "Nintendo kid" so I don't like you implying that we must be a "N Kid" in order to not have scratches.

Oh, grow a fucking pair. If you know you don't have scratches, you don't have to prove it to me.

You're absolutely right. So your whole "Despite what some people have claimed" garbage was pretty much, well, garbage.

Hmm, I'll try it again, but I've tried pushing the bubbles to the sides with the stylus or some card to no avail. I'll probably take it off, wash it and then try your sellotape technique and reapply later.

At the moment there's loads of bubbles, but they're not noticable when you're playing. Heh.

I'm quite annoyed that the top screen went on trouble-free, like I need it on there. :rolleyes

Idiocy explains the scratches on the top screen, but what possible explanation is there for the sratches next to the TOP screen? That doesn't make much sense to me.

I think I alternated between using the stylus and my thumb to smooth the bubbles out. They weren't really noticable when playing the game, but they showed up as dark patches in pictochat, and frankly just knowing they were there drove me crazy anyway. Good luck!

No scratches at all. Also had Mario 64 and played a lot of MP: First Hunt since launch. I usually clean the bottom screen with a cotton swab after some extensive play.

I just saw this item (it was actually a combo of different styli with screen protectors) at my Circuit City. I wonder if it's worth it?

How much was it? I would probably get one if I had a DS.

If I remember correctly, it was around $9.99. Now that I remember a little more, it wasn't made by Pelican but by Intec. 3 styli + 2 screen protectors.

Since I can't find anything about it online, I think I'll go grab one tomorrow to test it out.
