I personally had seen murmurs of Chinese cities shutting down, then when italy shut down, and soon my relatives in UK were barred from literally visiting their own relatives, i was like shit is about to hit the fan. Agreed, but there was a period where off-shoring production benefited the US as it kept prices low and kept people happy. Governments are the ones who, possibly indirectly, took the decision that free economics would shut down US manufacturing plants. Returning manufacturing to the US isn't a bad thing, but prices are higher either way - forcing back to the US, or tariffs.

He didn't need to do this, his legacy was pretty much secure with the comeback win and was chilling.

I think he believes the Alexander Hamilton philosophy that domestic manufacturing is the most important aspect of a country. Hamilton as the first Secretary of Treasury believed in strong protectionism/tariffs. I don't think Hamilton was completely wrong on those beliefs. During the Civil War, the North had far superior manufacturing ability over the largely agricultural South. That played a key role in the North overcoming quite a few blunders early in the war. Strong manufacturing capability was of huge importance in WW2 also.(and the immediate Cold War with Soviet Union after)

The United States was extremely protectionist at the start of the industrial revolution. President McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt slapped 50% tariffs on most imports.(1890-1910)

I have many doubts that he will be successful but I do think being a largely service economy with piss poor manufacturing capability has many downsides/risks also.(Covid as an example. You don't want to be largely dependent on imports in a global pandemic )

Honestly, this kind of shift was bound to happen eventually. The global economy has its perks, sure, but the way capitalism played out in the private sector became more and more incompatible with U.S. national interests. It crazy that the U.S. has tried using other tools, tax breaks, trade deals, infrastructure, all that, but lacked the consistency and willpower to make them stick. Too much political tug-of-war, constant policy flip-flopping, and short-term thinking. That's great but the the problem is how is this plan supposed to help anything? I'm going to guess neither of us are economists but I've yet to find one who can explain how this is supposed to go down. I've seen plenty of people say that it's going to bring back manufacturing but word on the street is that economics is a little complicated and I want to know if there are any steps in between unprecedented tariffs and getting manufacturing back to the states.
