Nintendo Switch Discussion Thread (Question of the Day, Countdown, etc)

Status
Not open for further replies.
In the UK it hits at 4am so some friends are coming around the night before (Thursday, different than our usual Tuesday weekly meet-up) for some multi player gaming and are sleeping over so we can all watch the announcement on my projector first thing.

We're all in the age range 30s/40s/50s. We play only local multi player games. Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Wii Party, Wii Sports, Nintendo Land, Bomberman, etc.

No I didn't. And honestly say what you want about Reggie but it doesn't really get more likeable than that guy

I don't think Reggie is likeable but also not unlikeable. He's unrelatable. He's a walking Marketing Communication 101 book. That's a stark contrast to the otherwise personality driven industry. People want a relatable manager despite their job being to represent a brand and increase sales. Just look at Spencer threads, people treat him as if he was "one of us" and a just a "cool dude".

Reggie is fine.

Yeah, i guess so, also i think that's gonna be the booting animation of the console, Nintendo has always been using this things and this one looks great and seems like will be the official Switch one

Imagine if they brought back the easter eggs for the intro like the GameCube had. That'd be amazing.

This is precious.

Also I'd bet money we'll see Bomberman on Switch. It just makes too much sense with the controllers.

I'd love to say the same but this is Konami we're talking about. :p Though I do believe they supported the Virtual Console quite well so credit for that.

You know the conversation about what could replicate the reaction to Bayonetta 2?

Well judging by some of the other threads on here any third party exclusive is going to prompt outrage. In fact Switch even getting multiplat games is probably going to do the same.

i think shockingalberto had it right - bayonetta 3 for switch is probably going to anger folks even more than bayonetta 2.

No matter the announcement, people will get angry this friday.

i was actually pretty encouraged by the amount of people upset about beyond good & evil 2. i had no idea people cared so much about the series and i hope it does well enough that ancel becomes a household name.

Ancel ruined any chance of a having an esteemed career with his lackluster Pac Man Mario Maker course.

Well it always had a fan following on GAF, so I wasn't that surprised. But in the end I wonder how much Nintendo anD Ubisoft will push the game. I imagine BG&E (HD) will be available on the eShop/VC. I like Ancel's games, but they never had the real backing needed to really reach the massmarket. Well, the King Kong game was pretty neat I guess.

Do we think an hour is long enough? I'm worried that it's not. There's so much about the system we still need to know such as what the ui is like, miiverse, possible achievement system, price and launch date etc by the time they've got through these details, that cuts down how much time they have to talk about games.

And half of that dedicated game segment will be Wii U ports!

Basically I'm worried we're not going to get all that many new game announcements. 🙃

It's a 1 hour stream. There is way more after that.

I'd say not to expect any actual gameplay demos, especially with the Treehouse stream the following morning. 2-3 minute trailers for all their games is plenty of time to showcase the launch lineup, since they should only need about 10 minutes to talk about pricing and date.

In that infamous January Direct, they dropped bombs in the last 10 minutes.
If it's an hour, it will be more than enough.
It could be a half hour and enough because of the hardcore Treehouse footage the next day of the games.

Couldn't the Treehouse stream also be used for the UI showcase? That seems likely.

Having a Treehouse later in the day, an hour is long enough to showcase the console and the Switch games which will be played on the Treehouse. Also, other games can just be teased with a minute-long video or if they are third parties, Kimishima can just announce them, and let the third parties do all the work on social media.

Yeah. I'm expecting one or two trailers/demos focused on 3rd party games with the rest being put into a sizzle reel. The Treehouse really does alleviate a lot of the issues a 1 hour presentation could bring.

That's what I'm hoping for. Hopefully they go through the hardware with us too and kind of show us all the books and crannies.

Remember that Wii U unboxing video with Iwata? I really enjoyed that.

Is it time for the presentation yet?

It's the 3DS-successor angle that is honestly perplexing. Apparently developers only made 3DS games because it's cheap and not because it has/had a massive install base and games sold well.

Also 3DS games had to be exclusive because Resident Evil: Revelations, Monster Hunter Tri G, Ex Troopers, Castlevania Mirror of Fate, Batman Arkham Blackgate and One Piece Unlimited Red were never ported to more powerful consoles.

EDIT:

On the topic of time I expect a lot of games to be revealed in a sizzle reel and then revealed after the event by the relevant publisher.

I think both Batman and One Piece were on Vita, also, RE:Revelations didn't get an HD remaster?

edit: I've been google searching and I found both One Piece and Ex Troppers being also PS3 games

Regarding the length, let's not forget that this presentstion is focusing entirely on the Switch and it's games. Unlike E3 presentations, there will be no previous sales data or reflections to be had. One hour should be plenty.

Save games for E3? I think some are forgetting the market reality Nintendo is currently facing.

This live event and all marketing leading up to launch is the best (if not only) time to drive sales momentum for their new hardware.

Remember: Nintendo is facing market decline on all fronts; better to leverage what you have now rather than arbitrarily wait for a legacy event who's relevance is equally as questionable. Only one shot to make first impression.

(you can always tease something and do a full reveal at e3)

that's the point - the 3ds wasn't receiving third-party games that were only exclusive to the machine. it received a decent amount of multiplatform games too, which means the switch isn't automatically excluded from a similar future.

Now that I think about it, they kept some game announcements for the Treehouse stream back at E3 2014 (Mario Party 10, Devil's Third and some other stuff like that), so they'll probably do it again this time.

i think their focus is going to mainly be on games that will launch through 2017. that could mean splatoon, mario, zelda, mario kart, mario x rabbids rpg, smash bros., pokemon, pikmin, and then some third-party titles slated basically through summer. at e3 it would be a fuller lineup through the early parts of 2018 and might include xenoblade, animal crossing, retro's new title, etc.

i think it's possible that next week can feel like a blowout while still accounting for the year, while e3 can be similarly exciting and be the schedule for the year leading up to the next e3.

Yep I think that's likely but I hope Nintendo will tease some games for 2018. Just tease their biggest franchise like Metroid (if that's finally coming...) Animal Crossing and all, a teaser of few seconds just for the message : "Don't worry Nintendo fans, all of your favorite franchises will be there on switch."

Whilst true my point was actually kind of the opposite. The 3DS still got exclusives even when it was clearly possible to develop games on a multiplatform basis. Two of the developers in the examples I gave(Capcom and Ganbarion) developed 3DS exclusives after multi-platform games.

Yep. Its either "stealing our games" or in the case of multiplats, "making the games worse" since they believe all versions will be downgraded to work on Switch. And Nintendo looses with these guys either way.

Please, show me a presentation that spend time detailing the UI.

They will make a game Montage show controls, things not confirmed yet and people using these things in games. For example, the oculte L and R on Joycon and people playing Mario Kart with it.

Out of all the things I want to know about this thing, the UI is like bottom 3.

Not for me. The Wii U U.I. was abysmal in how slow it was. With a system that's as supposed to provide instant functionality between home console & portable console, I hope that speed & efficiency also translates to the U.I. I hope it's nothing like the 'channel browser' that the last two systems featured.

In that interview that Laura did with OBE1, she mentioned that one of her sources described a tile-based OS similar to the Wii U & the 3DS.

I'm not sure why Nintendo would move away from a tile based UI considering it's also the standard on mobile and tablets.

I don't think they'll only aim at the "future for Nintendo fans". Nintendo fans will be there.
They have to show a really bright future for everyone to
re
consider Nintendo in their home/hands.
Anyway the good thing is that the can easily show first party games that are not "too Nintendo" for some people. Though the market is different in every region.

It's more than obvious that they're going to focus on the launch, but since we have the treehouse, hands on in big cities as well as 2 months remaining to market the launch, I think they can be a little more open in the presentation.

I like the tile based UI, i just need the OS to be faster and hope that the style of it reflect the red colors of the logo than the white used in their current system.

There's like 7 hours of Treehouse.

I agree with all of this. I fully expect the debut event to focus on 2017 titles, especially the launch window. And because of that I'm expecting a lot of screen time to ports as Nintendo hit the reset button and pretend the Wii U never happened.

I'm kinda at the stage where I don't want to see more of Zelda, too. Not because I don't think they should show it, but I really feel the less I know and see about the game at this point the more I'll enjoy it come release. I'm already sold and anything I see/learn is just one less surprise I could experience for myself.

If I get the opportunity to watch I'll tune out for that inevitable segment. I don't think I will though; it screens at like...3pm Friday for me. If it were ~3 hours later it'd be perfect as I could watch as soon as it get home. Alas I will be at work.

Yeah I'm also hoping for some UI goodness, even if they just show boot and some transitions. Also looking forward to system features and whetherl Streetpass be back or not .. love that puzzle swap
