Ok. Got mine, got everything set up. Played Zelda for a couple hours.
So far, good impressions. The unit itself feels nice and solid. The Joy-Cons in the grip feel fine as a "controller", and I didn't have much trouble using them independently, either.
The UI on the device itself is wonderful, but on a 60" TV, I found everything to be way too large. They should have applied some kind of scaling to the UI when it's on a television, especially a large one. Actually, I think there is an option for that in the system settings, I might have to go fiddling with it and see what it does, if it makes any difference.
Getting my Nintendo account linked was quick and painless.
I did have one issue getting the thing online after it updated its software for the first time. It didn't seem to want to reconnect to my wireless router. I ended up having to go back in and change the "Auto Connect" options off and on again, and then it connected fine. Took me a few minutes of retrying to figure it out.
For those wondering about third-party cases (given the problem with the Insignia case earlier in the thread), I bought
THIS Hyperkin case from Amazon and was finally able to try it out. The Switch itself fits in the bottom half fine (nice and snug), but that mesh on the top half is pretty much worthless. I tried putting the wrist straps in there, but there's nothing to hold things in, so the next time you open the case, there's a better than average chance they'll just fall on the floor. I guess if you had something big enough to actually stretch the elastic on that mesh, it would hold, but then you'd have a hard time closing it against the system, so... Not bad if you're carrying
only the system and some games, but forget about accessories. It's only ten bucks, though, so take it for what it's worth.
It does seem as though the system runs on battery all the time. So even if it's "charging", it's still playing the game off the same power that it's trying to refill. After two hours of Zelda, the system had barely gotten 10% additional charge. Bear that in mind if you're wanting a "quick" charge.. if you plan to continue playing, it ain't gonna be quick.
As for the Joy-Con connection issue.. yep, it's there. I'm sitting on a couch about nine feet from the TV, and the system is down near the floor, sitting on top of my PS4. I would cross my legs without even thinking about it, and then I notice that Link didn't always stop moving once I let go of the stick... my leg was in between the controller and the system and was apparently blocking the signal. Definitely need to fix that.. I don't have that problem with any other system that I play the same way. I might end up getting a Pro controller at some point, but I don't feel that it's entirely necessary right now. Aside from the connection/interference issue with the Joy-Cons, the Grip controller is perfectly fine.
Overall, I like it. I can finally get back into the Nintendo fold after two full generations without one (aside from handhelds).
