Nintendo Switch Launch Thread: Now you're playing with power; HYBRID POWER!

I bought Shovel Knight back on the Wii U. I thought the game was alright. Didn't fall in love with it like other people here on GAF did. Is it much better on Switch?

The preference here is the portability and the higher quality screen. If you weren't too good with Shovel Knight to begin with, I'm not sure if you'd be into it again on a newer device. But hey, theyve been adding more different campaigns since then, look those up and see if the alternate gameplay style works for you.

Don't try to plug it in to those plugs (without an adaptor). Those plugs have safety features that block the two lower prongs until something is plugged in to the top one (and no, don't stick something in the top just to unblock the bottom...)

Afaik, the switch power supplies are the same around the world, just with different plugs so you should be able to buy a travel adaptor from amazon or probably even some supermarkets. Just make sure the power supply says 100-240V and 50-60Hz.
Thanks for your advice, you mean I need something like this? :
100PCS-American-US-USA-to-EU-font-b-Europe-b-font-European-AC-Travel-Charger-Power.jpg

because I do see a lot of these in supermarkets, and the voltage of this is important too, right?

I'm officially joining this party!!

All I'm going to say for now is: so happy there's a dark theme! Praise be to whichever UI designer pulled for that. The world needs more dark themes.

Preach brother!

But yes dark themes need to be an essential. Still annoyed Google photos and many others have blinding white themes only.

Do the neon joycon packs come with the neon strap attachments?

Seen reports that the colours of the straps don't quite match those of the joy-cons.

I actually prefer the black straps so glad those were the ones that came with the system.

Question for pro controller users.

Does the pro controller function as a wired controller when plugged in? I've read it auto syncs when connected and then there is the Hori wired controller. So is it safe to assume it does cause you can't be too sure with Nintendo.

I'm hoping someone comes out with a grip for portable mode. I'm having the same problem with the switch as I had with my 3ds until I got the Hori Monster Hunter grip. Just constant thumb cramps because of the size of the thing. After about 1 hour I have to put it down because my right thumb is throbbing. I understand that it has to be portable but I really want larger joycons or a really thick grip to alleviate this cramped controller.

I bought a pro controller for couch mode as the joycons in the grip are also too small. I'm really hoping the 3rd party steps it up. Shit, if they don't I may have to 3D print something.

I really love the console so far, but the joycon range issues and weak wifi connectivity are putting a bit of a damper on it so far. It's a shame, because I *really* like the joycon grip as a controller, and there's no way I'm shelling out for a pro controller when I don't even really want it, but it's such a glaring problem and I'm shocked that it survived to release day. It struggles to pick up signals from the other side of the room with no obstructions! How does that kind of problem not get fixed immediately!? The wifi issues are less of a problem because if I undock, connect to the wifi, then dock again the signal stays just fine, but it's still annoying.

When they inevitably announce more colours of joycon (I mean they've GOT to at this point, I need my purple joycons!) the connectivity problems had better be fixed.

This is my favorite Nintendo console since the N64.

I hope it takes off and we get a lot of support for it.

If I didn't have these issues, this would probably be my opinion right now, at least with regards to the OS and feel of the device. It *feels* worth the price tag, and it *feels* so nice in my hands!

btw guys, is all Nintendo switch from all regions accept the same amount of voltage (110~240v "automatic")? or the voltage locked for every region in specific amount of voltage?

Thanks, This worked for me just now

hopefully an update will come that will fix this issue, but I'm okay using the guest wifi for now

That's great to hear. Before I got the Switch, I was so worried that it wouldn't work, and I was a bit upset because I assumed it wouldn't, but thankfully, that's not the case.

I'm excited too. And I have it on Xbox 360, One and PC.

Nice! So am I, and I've never even played Skyrim before. Also, the guy I mentioned before says stuff like 'Nintendo just makes the same games', 'toy consoles' etc but BoTW made him completely change his mind.

Their pricing is so odd.

It looks like $90 is the price of both the dock($60) and charger($30). If you aren't buying a dock as a replacement for your current one, then buying a second one for another room is pointless without a power supply.

So after Zelda pretty much all weekend, I just went back to Horizon but my TV keeps switching back to the HDMI input that the Switch is connected to every few minutes. It does this whether the Switch is in Sleep Mode or completely off.

Anyone know of a setting I should look for either on the Switch or my TV? I don't want to have to unplug the Switch every time I want to play PS4.

If you have an old Wii U controller stand it works perfect for the switch. Waaaaay better than the kick stand

Of course. Will definitely try that. And yeah the kickstand is a joke. Pretty nice to show off in a presentation, but for actual use? Eeeh

Doesn't the Switch have something related to that in the options? I don't think you have to mess with the TV if you don't want.

I completely fixed my joy-con issues by moving my router to the other side of the tv cabinet. I used to have issues sitting 4 feet away from the tv but now I can go 20+ feet without a hiccup.

Is someone playing Zelda with split joy cons? I tried it for a bit but it just felt weird. I wonder if it is just not for me or if there is a bit of an adjustment period.

Weird. I don't think I have anything near my TV that would create any issues yet I can't be over 4 ft away.

Does anyone else's Switch keep taking over the TV screen even when idle? I have all my consoles going through an HDMI switch that automatically displays the active unit. Since adding the Switch the screen keeps turning black from time to time, seemingly because the switch is trying to display something.

Do they let you return your opened software? I mean I can see an exception since you are also returning the console you are playing it on, but I wasn't sure...

They don't, but they made an exception for the system. I traded Zelda in for $30. I'll be busy with Nioh, Horizon, Nier and Mass Effect for a few months. Hopefully issues are ironed out by then and I'll finish Zelda.

Does the packaging for the switch mention 1080p anywhere clearly visible? because i've heard 3 or 4 streamers now mention that the switch can only do 900p then upscales... which is wrong outside of zelda being a 900p game.

So I hit extremely bad joycon desync issues today. I think I know what caused them, too.

I have two sets of joycons. I was playing bomberman with my gf using one set, while the switch was docked and the other set was attached to the switch still. Had extremely bad desync issues. Bomberman was unplayable and even the switch menus were bad.

Once I took the set of joycons out of the docked switch and put them next to the machine, the problems instantly went away.

This is seriously weird. It was a night and day difference. Has anyone else seen this kind of problem?

Do you have an iPad? I was using that last night and a leftover USB-C from my Note 7.
On old ipad why? You mean for its usb wall outlet?

I went by BB while running errands and grabbed their 20 dollar usbc- usb a cable. The guy said it should power the system but likely wont charge it if I use an iphone usb outlet thing. Wonder if it would charge with another usb wall outlet?

Maybe if you revoke the permission from your Facebook account as well after you unlink from the Switch side?

Oh yeah, I guess that make sense. So if you go to Facebook and in the upper right click on settings, then on the left click on apps you can see a list of all things that have access to post. Clicking on the Switch app allowed me to change post visibility.

Thanks.

I was playing my sisters Switch and I found we got better joycon connectivity if we placed a a couple feet of tinfoil behind it, folded inwards.

Getting much better wifi speeds on Switch in my setup after forcing it to use my 5GHz network.

(by banning it from my 2GHz network in the router interface)

So my Switch suddenly stopped connecting to my wifi. I know people had wifi issues from the beginning, but it's weirding me out because it's been working fine for two days and then suddenly stopped. It won't detect any network at all. Anything I can do about it?

I'll ask again and see if anyone is having similar issues.

My Switch won't stay in sleep mode. Every time I put it to sleep (either by pressing the power button or explicitly selecting the option) the screen turns on again displaying the lock screen after about 5 seconds. Eventually it times out, but then 5 seconds later it's back on again.

Anyone had a similar issue? The only possible thing I could think of is that the screen protector I'm using covers the light-detection bit on the front. Maybe that's used as part of the waking process and its messing it up?

If anyone has any ideas I'd be really grateful.

You can change it in system settings. It's one of the last options.

I'm having a small problem with the Switch connected to the dock, though I assume it's already been mentioned.

My dock is connected to an HDMI splitter, to which my Wii U and PS4 are also connected. If the Switch is in the dock and I'm playing, say, my PS4, the image on my monitor will go black from time to time and sometimes not even recover, kicking me back to the second HDMI port (my PC).

I'm definitely sure that it's my Switch what is causing this behavior, since I removed it from the dock, played Horizon for about an hour and had absolutely no issues with it anymore. Any ideas of what may be going on?

Also, is there any way to keep the Switch completely turned off when you connect it to the dock to charge? It turns itself on and goes to sleep mode whenever I connect it (which I assume is the root of my problem too).

I am. Having the controllers in any position was one of my favourite features of the Wii, and something I missed with the Wii U. So glad to have it back.

Anyone know of any gigabit ethernet adapters that for sure work with the Switch?

The Hori official Switch one and also the Wii U one work...there are Wii U compatible ethernet adapters on eBay for around $10 so those may be worth a try. No point in gigabit, really...so I wouldn't worry about that for the Switch.

Does anyone know if NFC is always active on the Pro Controller/JoyCon if you have it enabled? I disabled NFC and Wifi in airplane mode but I am not sure if enabling NFC all the time will kill the Pro Controller or Joycon battery.

ah man, so you can only use the original Switch AC adapter with the dock?

I got my BB USBC cable, and it does seem to charge the Switch with a usb wall adapter. But when plugging that into the dock, it says it cant connect to the TV and I need the original AC adapter. Sucks.
