[Eurogamer] If Switch 2 is the end of innovative Nintendo, there's much to be sad about

Play it loose and fast with money that's not yours. Who can blame Nintendo for playing it safe after the monster success of the Switch? They've stumbled enough with N64, Gamecube and WiiU to have learned some lessons.
Let them innovate in their games. Maybe once they stockpile enough profits after Switch 2, they will pivot and take some chances.

Meanwhile Sony and Microsoft are wishing they had a hybrid console or handheld option, chasing the leader.

Switch 2 is an organizationally move by Nintendo to get paid, nes, snes, n64 were validated, I think game cube tried to compete with ps2, wii couldn’t have done it any better (dvd player missing, bad online (friend codes)) etc.

They're definitely right but it's not surprise at all. You just need to look at Nintendo's offering over the last few years to see how boring and risk averse they've become.... It's truly sad to see from endless remakes which are worse than their predecessors like mario tennis and strikers, to remasters of old games that don't even have Nintendo's old seal of quality with awful performance issues.... They're not even trying at all. Putting an accountant as the head of a gaming company can never be a good thing. It always leads to the company to be less risk averse and to reduce the risks associated with innovation. Sony is suffering from the same thing as we speak. So predictable, so boring.

It's wild as nobody expected Nintendo to drastically diverge from the foundation they had laid with the switch. However, that announcement didn't even have an ounce of creativity which is very unusual for Nintendo. Based on the trailer, I can see they learned almost nothing from the mistakes of the original switch.

My favorite version of nintendo was when they gave a damn about graphics and competing head to head against sony, sega, etc etc. Nes, snes, n64, and gamecube are the best nintendo consoles of all time and nothing comes close to them in my opinion. They all were unique with fun and weird accessories and it felt like nintendo at their best. Now they're content to spam a few franchises, remaster games nonstop, and play it safe.

I'd say the controllers doubling as a mouse is plenty innovative. Will make shooting a lot more accurate while still being to move with a thumbstick. That's pretty great.
We can have a real console RTS now.

It's not like this is the first iterative nintendo console, the GBA's big innovation was...shoulder buttons.

Or you know, you could just plug a mouse and keyboard into your ps5 or series x/s which is far superior to this half ass version.

Gamecube is arguably my favorite console ever. It's also the best co-op console ever. Gauntlet dark legacy on gamecube slaps, super smash bros melee slaps, mario kart double dash is the best mario kart in my opinion, mario party 4 slaps as well as the other gamecube mario parties, mario baseball slaps, mario strikers slaps, mario golf slaps etc etc. Also timesplitters 2 on gamecube is perfection for co-op as well. So many bangers on the gamecube and even a game like animal crossing is phenomenal to play with someone and a blast.

What if prefer the analog stick to move over typing on some keys.
I mean you're free to prefer what you prefer. It doesn't changed the fact that this design is half-assed. Even with your preference, your experience is till compromised due to the design. Using one of the joycons as a mouse based on the way it was shown is suboptimal. The buttons are in a suboptimal position making using the buttons compromised and the design is not ergonomic.

Tangent: Speaking of ergonomics, the bare minimum Nintendo could have done is to redesign the joycon to be more ergonomic when holding the device. This way people wouldn't have to rely on 3rd party grips, controllers, etc. They couldn't even do that. Lazy ass company.

To be fair, most journalists in all fields are idiots.
I'm not sure there are many journalists around anymore. Just some dudes having access to drop an article on a site, being either dishonest or extremely forgetful and not even mentioning what they said last time round. Thanks, Internet.
I fondly remember my monthly gaming magazines where people had time to mull things over.

Too late, Fry. You will rue this day, the day we became enemies. Posting from my Blackberry.
Where did you get that Blackberry, tell me now or I shall be very cross with you. For some reason I lined up the boxes of my last Blackberry purchases as a kind of shrine, rest in piss BB Z10, BB Key2, BB Priv :(

I mean, finally they didn’t throw a good idea under the bus for sake of innovation, ABOUT TIME. That’s what I was most worried, that they would throw the idea of switch for some other concept.

They still have patent for force feedback joystick, we’ll see in April what the joycons are really made of.

There are two USB C ports, that tells you all you need to know of what whacky Nintendi is planning.

Switch 2 can become your Phone charging device. Mic drop.

During the course of the Switch, Nintendo still came out with things like Labo, Labo Vr, Ring Fit, Mario Kart Home Circuit, & a goddamn alarm clock. I can only imagine that continues with Switch 2.

Innovation doesn’t mean good innovation.
Gaming as a whole needs to arrive at this same conclusion.
PS and Nintendo will lose to PC if they don't stop changing HW for the sake of changing HW.
Both PS and Nintendo have needlessly abandoned their greatest platforms while PC just stays on the same boring x86.

it does look boring, but give nintendo time to cook

also nintendo loves money, and it's potato hardware they can sell at a profit, plus lower game dev costs--theyll use this formula until it truly wears out its welcome.

Nintendo invents Switch;
- weak hardware that no one will care. It should do just a regular console like the PS4

Nintendo invents Switch 2;
- it's just a better version of the Switch. It should do something new

Let's vote with our wallets. In that case I meant plural because it will sell hot bananas

I like Nintendo games and therefore qill get one.

But I'm also very disappointed. It's so very boring.

And yes, I did buy a Wii U. A deluxe version and I spent rather a lot accessories.

The Switch 2 does seem pretty iterative, but then, 90% of my fond Nintendo memories aren't related to console-level hardware gimmicks, with the notable exceptions of the N64's 4 controller ports and a few great Wiimote-dependent games. Arguably, the Switch itself also relied on Nintendo playing around with weird concepts for the Wii U.

Still, I'm fine with a SNES-style successor with hardware innovation relegated to accessories. But I suspect people will be craving something weird for the Switch 3.

I dunno. If the mouse thing pans out, that could be a pretty big innovation--not in the sense that it hasn't been done before (though being first to make it part of your default console control scheme isn't nothing), but because it's new for them.

It might come to nothing or only be used in a handful of games, but it could be pretty great, especially if they remake/remaster Kid Icarus: Uprising. *shrug*

Here's hoping most of their innovation shows om the software side.

Traditionally, Nintendo's more "innovative" consoles/handhelds have been their most popular.

I guess the problem is that there's a fine line between innovation and gimmicks, and the most innovate space in gaming is VR, which has its own constraints that it seems like Nintendo doesn't want to support (yet).

Nothing wrong with having a "safe" console, though. If there's any innovation to be sad about, it's that Nintendo may be lacking innovation on their own games. There's so many franchise titles that have been pretty stagnant for a very long time, and not much in the way of new IP from them.

Utter, utter bollocks. I've bought every iteration of a Nintendo console going back to the Snes and no, having weird bullshit consoles or controllers was never a good thing. Nintendo games have always had the fun factor but when they started going down the weird and wacky route it wasnt great

I don't care if these soy latte drinking mental lepers think otherwise. It just wasn't. It was always just awkward as fuck

And they never stored properly. I don't like it

And that's that

I know it's engagement bait but my god.

Am I fucking crazy? The home consoles where Nintendo leaned heavy into gimmicks (Wii/Wii U) are easily their fucking worst. Who are these people pretending that isn't the case?? They had slightly more success on handheld but barely.

I'd rather have powerful hardware Nintendo than innovative 4 year old hardware.
It's time for a change.
Is it that powerful though? The Mario Kart they showed didn't look that impressive from a technical standpoint. Fun, I'm sure, but technically great I'm not so sure. Reacting now though does seem premature. Let's see the games they announce and show running up to launch.

The Wii was awesome, as was the DS.

Since when was Nintendo that industry lead in the hardware innovation?
Sure, they've made some wacky things, and they still do with peripherals, but they've always delivered top-notch games, and that's what matters imo
Sure, the wiimote was great and all, as well as the DS, but really, what happens when these things are not available? I think the NSW combines all the great things they make.

Ever hear of Eurogamer?
I Am Smart The Princess Bride GIF by Disney+

EDIT- The simple fact of the matter is Nintendo is SO innovative, Sony and Microsoft are trepidatious to dip their toes into this new frontier.

Idiotic headline for three reasons:

- FIrstly, we don't know much about the console. Like, wait for April you fucking jackrabbit.
- Secondly, the Switch is Nintendo's greatest success (yes, much more than the DS which was heavily discounted and pirated, and cheaper to begin with). Doing "more of the same, but better" is a perfectly valid strategy, and one which I broadly agree with. They can very well innovate with software, like they did with Zelda.
- Thirdly, we alreay know that the joy-cons can be used as a mouse. While a mouse isn't a groundbreaking concept, having it included in the controller is quite new for a console, and it is something that could appeal to both gamerzz and more casual Nintendo videogames enjoyers. For me at least, that's a pretty neat innovation on the already excellent joy-cons (I really like spit controllers, and I am a big gyro aiming fan).
There isn't much to expect videogame "journalists" and I still get disappointed.

And I say this as someone who believes that the reveal trailer was quite underwhelming and could have shown more in terms of difference with the OG Switch, even with the promise of a big blowout in April.

People weren’t onboard with the Wii due to motion controls. Yet somehow they make a better Switch, which is great for people who don’t want to sit in front of the TV, and the poor crybabies want more innovation?

I agree, these journalists suck. Go play some Labo.

I think some sort of mouse functionality packed in is a big deal. The other consoles have "supported" mice for 2 gens, but the games really haven't.

At the very least with them being built in I'm sure some RTS or other strategy game will do something with them.
