Nintendo: Wii U could become "preferred" Call of Duty platform

What the hell was he supposed to say? "Nah, just buy it on our competition's console. It's better that way. Our new system doesn't have any advantages, so it's worthless for this franchise"? I don't see a problem here...

He could've said the following:

'We are very excited to have the COD franchise on the Wii U and we hope our fans will be too.'
'We believe that the COD franchise would be fantastic on the Wii'
'We believe that there is a lot that the Wii U can offer with the COD franchise that differentiates it from our competitors.'

...but saying it could be the preferred platform is bad, from a Nintendo employee?

"The Wii U could become the preferred way to play those games for some of the core gamers." No COD mentioned

Quote No.2 after this:
"You can imagine how a game like Call of Duty would work on the Wii U - the GamePad will allow you to declutter the TV and pull gaming items like maps down and not interrupt your interaction and enjoy the cinematic quality of the game on the TV."

Eurogamer: "Wii U could become "preferred" Call of Duty platform" <--- COD has been mentioned AFTER the "preferred"-quote and it was an example

I might me totally wrong, but aren't COD gamers the so called "hardcore" gamers? This gamers usually like great graphics, why should this players buy a 8 year old graphical tech when they already have that in the ps3 or xbox360?

You are absolutely correct- I did not notice that the first time. Thread title is even worse than I thought!

Hmm, I read the article again, thank you for the suggestion. Yes, the representative used the COD as an example of why the Wii U could become the preferred platform for core gamers. If its the preferred platform for core gamers and core gamers love COD (sales say yes) then the Wii U could be the perferred platform for COD. Pretty much what the title says.

So basically if Nintendo says their new platform could not become the preferred platform for some core gamers they would get mocked, and if they do say their new platform could become the preferred paltform for some core gamers they would get mocked.

Good luck then. You people try really hard.

The mental gymnastics you've displayed on this thread should be remembered for all time with a title. C'mon mods.

I really, really hope that the Nintendo higher ups don't genuinely believe this. Because if they do, they're in for a very rude awakening in regards to their performance with this kind of game and market.

That's it Nintendo...pack it up and go home. You shouldn't believe you can succeed, nor should you show optimism to the public on issues you would like to be addressed. Next time, tell everyone you will fail when interviewed. It's easier that way.

Lolling aside for a moment...I dont play CoD much so Id love to hear some opinion on this

Wouldn't it be much harder to play competitively having to look down at the controller screen all the time to see where your enemies are on the map? And I dont see how aiming would be improved or made any easier..so the scope is on pad not the tv screen? What exactly does that help? Am I missing something?

Have realistic expectations is my advice.

So...he shouldn't have said "we will fail", but instead say, "Eh...we will do ok. We won't be number one, but it will be a good game on our system. Online will suck though."?

Would that have been more acceptable for an employee dealing with the public and trying to instill confidence about their new product?

I think Gamepad features would be more appropriate in single player mode, as things can be taken a bit slower and is generally more cinematic in nature. Regardless it doesn't seem like you'd be forced to use such features in multiplayer or otherwise, so I don't think it will be a concern for people who just want a normal CoD experience.

well in order for that to be the case, you have to have a competitive online platform and not just a walled garden mess of Miiverse garbage, because you waited so long to "catch up" to Sony/Microsoft. That includes voice chat integrated with the entire experience, no friend codes, feature-for-feature parity. None of this "OMG WELL WE DONT HAVE THAT, BUT WE DO HAVE MII'S!" cute shit. There are plenty of eight year olds who get amused at that shit, but past that it's only creepy people.

My advice: Look at the game. Does it look fun? Then be happy and don't fret too much the mystical powers that run it.

Why is it that looking at a game always somehow excludes actually looking at a game? Somehow this must be excluded from evaluation! Part of the fun is lookin' good. Games worse for not lookin' good.

well in order for that to be the case, you have to have a competitive online platform

Everything you said past this point was pointless because none of us know enough about their online platform with any surety -- outside of the fact they will integrate social feeds into their OS. The wider information is obviously coming at a later event.

If there are no substantive improvements over what they did with the Wii, you'd be right in everything you say... but I see little reason to believe that will be the case based off what Nintendo and folks like EA / Gearbox and others have been able to say so far.

Don't argue with Amir0x, he's more interested in hyperbole than facts.

Hardware is there, just need innovation and a user base.
Hardware is fine for what, a year at most? If Microsoft or Sony weren't releasing a new system for another 5 years I would agree.

In 2013 people are going to want to play the games the best way possible (well, barring them buying a PC anyway) and that means most will flock to the new consoles with better graphics and online.

The Wii U will be competing with the 360 and PS3 power wise but not for much longer. Wii U Call of Duty will be a downgraded port in order to run on that machine in the coming years.

When you come out first you better have the goods to protect against the next guys and specs wise they have little protection. Right now they have a controller and first party games...like they did last generation.

Torture a man using the stylus to extract information. Perform surgery on a terrorist to extract the nuclear bomb inside him and then disarm it.
The thing with mini games like those is, to do 'em right it takes time, but for a lot of devs, if you really really are doing them right, you might as well do a whole other game around it. If you have something that was put together in a few days, like your first example, it would be pretty boring if you ask me. Unless you're doing some tickle torturing or something, then it'd be hilarious and awesome

Your entire post is based on assumptions.

Except my comment was not pointless, the whole point was to say what they NEED to do if they actually WANT to get there. Whether they did it or not is the subject for a different post. I know that unlike you and many others, I don't have blind faith in Nintendo and am a student of history - I know what their online platforms are like, I've read Iwata's comments on the issues with Wii U going forward, and I know what problems their current environment has. Therefore, it is relatively easy to make a statement about what changes they need to implement to be taken seriously in this regard.

And anyway, a fucking flaming dog turd could be seen as an improvement over Wii and 3DS online. They need to be far more than a few "substantive improvements." And I'm sure they are there, I've said so many times. But I am just as completely positive that Nintendo remains mostly clueless as to what is required in a decent online infrastructure, and that this will remain why series like Call of Duty are not primary Wii U titles.

Don't argue with Amir0x, he's more interested in hyperbole than facts.

I'm not interested in slogging off companies, which may indeed by your inclination judging by your name. I could be wrong, but, rarely. I am, however, in tune with the facts - it's a fact Nintendo has been horrendous at every conceivable thing related to online. It's a fact Mii's are gross garbage. It's a fact my comment was asserting only what they'd need to do with their Wii U hypothetically in the future in order to make it Call of Duty's platform of choice, and that if you weren't kneejerking you wouldn't have viewed it as anything more.

So basically good ideas that could be really interesting and cool within the game's setting and story won't be good because the developers won't devote any effort to it.

Gotcha.

Amirox, you are being even more aggressive than usual. You doing okay?
