I went to buy a few tickets today. They asked if I wanted to pay the extra for the "Power Play". I asked how much it was to play for the insane jackpot and they said $2, and it's $1 more to add the PP and that if I won I'd get even MORE money. I said told them pretty much, really, MORE money? I told them to forget it and that I'm not that greedy, haha.

Powerplay does not work on the Jackpot. Only for the lower prizes.

If a GAF'er wins, can you buy me a PS4? :p

Good luck to all that played! I do not play Powerball because the sheer volume of eligible states bugs me lol... but my Wife plays it so I guess I play by proxy?

I only buy tickets when the prize is greater than the ticket cost*chance of winning the grand prize. so $584M for this Powerball jackpot system.

I know this isn't entirely rational because of split pots and lesser prizes, but hey, it's
a fantasy
aspirational.

Bought $20 worth of tickets (random numbers of course) on the way home.

Good luck lotteryGAF!

If I win, I'll buy everyone who has posted in this thread a GAF Gold account! Wait, how much does that cost again?

Seriously though, I can't even imagine winning this much money. Imagine going from standard lower-middle class or so to just BAM, having half a billion dollars just out of the blue. I can't even fathom it.

Today's amusing statistic:

The odds of winning are roughly 1 in 292 million. There are already more people in the 44 states which participate in Powerball than that. If it were possible to assign every single person in the 44 states a different combination, one person would be able to win every drawing.

However, as nobody has won in a really long time (which is why the jackpot is nearing $1 billion), it's clear that some combinations are being picked more than once and others aren't being picked at all.

Less than an hour to go guys!

If I win, I would take the 30 payments. That way I don't go crazy with $420 million at once

$10 million is way more than I need for the rest of my life, let alone for one year

Here's a breakdown of all the state taxes. New York is highest at 8.82% !!!!

I've always thought buying multiple tickets was for suckers (you're not gonna win, and playing 1 number is as fun as 10) - but this is a smart* idea.

*In the logic of buying lottery tickets

Not that I'm in the business of telling people what they should do with their money, but it isn't really better than buying different numbers. As you get more money, the perceived value of each dollar is inherently less. The difference between $500 million and $50 million isn't that huge for someone who has that kind of money but 0.01% of either of those amounts would feed a homeless guy for a long time.

I'd take the lump sum, invest the vast majority of it, and use the rest to live my daily life. In the end you would have way more than the total jackpot.

But you could beat that though fairly easily and at the same time be less at the "mercy" of the tax rate and who knows what else that could happen over the next 30 years. It would be pretty easy to live entirely off interest/dividends and not touch the principal. Keep in mind that the tax rate shown in the image isn't your likely final tax burden.

I'm surprised that to get the jackpot up faster, they haven't increased the payout for the smaller prizes.

Matching 4 numbers only get someone $100. 3 numbers. Only $7.

You'd be taking less overall then.
If you did a present value calculation for your future cash flows, you'd find out it would be less than the current lump sum. This is all based off the interest rate fluctuations being similar to the past.

Take the lump sum, just invest in index funds and you'll be fine. Simplest way to be rich for generations.
