Nokia Lumia |OT| Worth the Weight

Got a network+ setting update. Apparently it may fix in cases where you pull down the clock and network bar resulting in 4G and 3G flipping around. Mine did that and it seems to be fixed.

Really wish Nokia would update Cinemagraph so I can use my front camera for it, as well as add a timer for it so I can GIF myself.

Just bought a case for my 920 off of eBay and I'm very impressed. I never put one on my 900 because beautiful phones are meant to be case free however both of my 900s looked like ass after a while no matter how much I babied them.

The case I bought is made by 'Rock' and is ultra slim. It set me back 8 bucks. I got the white to match my phone though its more of a pearl color rather than ultra pure white. The case fits perfectly and is about as minimal as you can get while still offering ample drop protection. Highly recommend it, especially for the money. I'll probably be buying a few more colors.

I'll follow up with a few pictures once I'm home.

Soooo... I'm not a big phone guy (as in "I'm not interested in owning expensive, high-end phones, and I don't like physically big phones), and am looking at the Lumia 800 (WP7.8) or the soon to be released Lumia 620 (WP8).

Should I wait for the potentially more expensive 620, or go with the 800?

In other words: WP8 or Gorilla Glass + AMOLED + Carl Zeiss 8MP camera?

EDIT: I use my phone for calls + texting (duh), web browsing + Facebook, navigation, Twitter, and taking photos + videos. Not much else, really; I hardly ever play mobile games, for example.

Case sounds interesting. I haven't decided what case I want to get yet. I want it to be thin and also offer some grip to make the phone less slippery.

So guys I'm back on the Windows Phone bandwagon. Put aside my iPhone 5 and rocking a 920 for the past couple days. Despite the missing apps I'm loving the experience except for the really poor battery life? Are there any tips that could help? I'm on the latest software.

Push less email, make sure facebook chat is off, limit the number of background task, do a couple cycles where draining and fully charging the battery.

What kind of battery life are you getting?

Seems to be 4 hours or so from full charge but haven't fully tested it. It's substantially less than the 5 that's for sure. I bought it used. I might do a warranty swap to see if that improves it.

Hmmm. I generally get at least 12 hours with moderate usage. Should definitely get more that 4 unless you are watching videos for 4 hours.

I got awful battery life the first two days when I was setting everything up (and probably using it excessively) but now it lasts all day with a decent charge left.

My wireless charging plate arrived today. Such a simple thing, but I love it. I want a charging stand next.

Edit: Nokia is supposed to be releasing their gel cases for the 920 soon as well. Look much better than the 900 ones, these have the cut-outs for the buttons.

Damn I really want a 920. But with the surface pro on my buy List, I cannot make anouther expensive electronics purchase, especially since my omnia 7 is still kicking.

Sweet, will keep an eye our for the gel cases.

Expansys has them for $16.99

Yeah saw that, should be available soon. Not sure what colour I would get.

I recommend this case to everyone. It looks so good, that I have already forgotten that my phone is wearing it.

wow, there are even cyan cases? Nice.

I got another update today and now my 4G take a long time to show up. It was doing that before then the last update seems to fix it, but the update I got yesterday seems to make it worst. It's not a big deal really since it still connecting but it's really odd.

I love this phone. I thought about a case this week when I was at Microsoft kiosk and they have Incipio case. I try it out for a bit but I prefer my phone naked.

Looks like Rogers (Canada) is getting more colours. I'm bummed because I really wanted the red. But seeing those gel covers has changed my mine. Those look fantastic, really great fit.

I'd wait. Who knows what kind of Windows Phones will be out this coming fall whereas there probably won't be anything coming out that will be a major step of from the Surface Pro for a while. Unless you're like me and holding out for a MS "X" branded gaming tablet to be announce at E3.

So is there any way to post to Facebook or email pictures that are not gross, low-res versions of the original? This is a deal-breaker. WTF. Sell phone to people who care about photos, ruin people's photos when they try to share them. WTF.

EDIT: I mean what the fuck.

I did some comparison testing with my Pre 3. The Pre 3 had much sharper photos across the field. The 920 had noticeable blurring away from the center of focus. All of the objects in the photo were about the same distance, it's not like it was focusing at a different distance. The noise was remarkably low in the 920 shots, though.

So why was the version I emailed myself 131 KB when the original was 2 MB? And why did the Pre 3 upload photos to Facebook at original res?

tylt qi charger for $70. Charges at 1 amp rather than 750 mah that the Nokia charges at. Plus it can charge vertical an horizontal.

Out of curiosity, did you use the Facebook app or the integrated share to Facebook functionality? Maybe the share to compresses the images and the app doesn't?

Microsoft has gone a bit overboard with the saving data stuff. I hate not being able to download something over cellular just because it is bigger than 25 megs. You let me stream the file but not download it? What kind of crap is that?

Nokia Audio just updated but it still wont open on my phone? Wish I could delete it and reinstall it but it doesn't seem I can do that. Might have to reset my entire phone. I'll hold off until they can get the app to work over Bluetooth.

lol what?
I emailed the photo to myself. It was 131 KB. I downloaded the photo via USB. It was 2 MB.

The Facebook client for the Palm Pre 3, and the built-in Facebook uploader in webOS Camera, both upload the photos at high resolution. So it's not Facebook per se.

Out of curiosity, did you use the Facebook app or the integrated share to Facebook functionality? Maybe the share to compresses the images and the app doesn't?

I used the integrated share in both places. Just to see, I emailed myself the photo by attaching it to the email. 244 KB. Motherfucker, really?

EDIT: Actually, the Facebook pic was 131 KB. Both emailed copies were 244. Apparently it doesn't matter how you email it, you're fucked.

Yeah, it doesn't send full res pics over text or email, not surprised it doesn't to FB. In WP7 we couldn't even upload full res pics to SkyDrive (without using the standalone app).

I'd try using the Facebook app and see if it does the same thing.

Facebook app: 643 KB (Looks plenty good)
Photos -> Share To: 145 KB (Looks like shit and badly reprocessed shit at that)

So the Facebook app is fine, but the email thing is bullshit. This is all I use my dataplan FOR.

sooo im looking to buy a new phone today, ive been rocking a 100 dollar phone for 3 years... its either a 920 or a galaxy 3

theyre both too big but they seem to be similar in size... i like the sounds of the 920 being more durable, and by the sounds of it the phone is a bit smoother to use

im leaning towards the 920... i guess my priorities are durability, calls, email and internet browsing... but i dont want to miss out on apps, should i be concerned with the 920?

edit: hmmmm no expanded memory either

It should meet your needs. 32GB is pretty good, but I guess it depends how much music you plan on putting on it. With the 920 you are also getting an excellent camera. Is there any specific apps you need?

Sounds like a Galaxy SIII for you. Do you use Google Calendar and Contacts?

The 920 is easily recommendable for photo buffs... except for the lack of a way to email full-res photos. I have been extremely impressed by the photos it takes.

wut? If he has basic needs, the Lumia 920 is an infinitely better phone.

In fact, because you're a first time smartphone owner, the Lumia 920 is about a perfect fit as you can get. You're not tied up in an ecosystem, you're not mentally biased against Windows Phone just because it doesn't have the overall number of apps available that 99% of people don't even use.

Pretty much everything major app-wise is on the Lumia or there's a great alternative. For example, some might say there's no official Youtube app for Windows Phone, yet MetroTube or PrimeTube are better youtube clients that either Android or iOS could hope to have.

You're also not mentally begrudged the Lumia for it's weight which a lot of current smartphone users do because they're already used to a lighter phone. This will be your first large screen high-end smartphone, so the weight will feel natural a lot quicker.

And at the end of the day, it's simply a much more beautiful and durable than the S3. It has the best camera on the market, and the the sync software is simple and easy to use. In fact, you can even attach the device as USB and just files directly into the folders.

The "flaws" of Windows Phone or Lumia 920 are only really flaws to those who have experiences or attachments to other smartphones. As a first time user, you will absolutely love it.

Amazon has the different colored Nokia bumper gel cases as TooS

http://amzn.com/B009T8YXCA

And no white: they have grey instead.

Nice. Added to cart. I bought a screen protector from the AT&T store and the fucker fell off after about five hours. I'm going to see if I can get my money back, if I can, I'm going to buy the case you linked and the screen protector in the related items. With shipping and handling, it would cost the same as the screen protector I bought.
