You know, we REALLY do need to do something. This whole pissing contest has gone on for 50 fucking years. Shit needs to stop so both countries can get over the past.

No coverage on CNN International. Good coverage on BBC, Sky, Al Jazeera.

Fox broke in 30min ago with preliminary report, cnn had 5min blurb then went back to sleep, lights out at msnbc

they still don't have a reliable delivery system AFAIK so its moot

Wrong. To reach the US, sure, but they can reach Japan and South Korea with their current Taepodong missiles. Hell, they can reach Seoul with just artillery.

NK ballistic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear payload:

Taepodong-2 (failed test in 2006): 4-6,000km
Taepodong-1: 2,500km
*Rodong-2 (aka Nodong): 2,000km

*aka Iran's Shahab-3 and Pakistan's Ghauri II (this goes back to the AQ Khan network)

T-2 may not work yet and R-2 may not be nuclear capable, but T-1 certainly is.

No, when I say the US does not recognize NK as a nuclear power I mean the US does not believe they have the capability to deliver a nuclear strike. Those are the "facts on the ground".

You're saying the US doesn't believe NK has the capability to deliver a nuclear strike ANYWHERE or US soil? If it's the former please provide some evidence.

Best of all. I just turned on the TV here in Japan and no channel is speaking about this.

I will check out again in a bit. But damn hopefully everything goes fine.

It was a soldier death last I read, for what it's worth politically.

That being said, North Korea couldn't have known it wouldn't kill any civilians.

It's a strange situation but I still don't think it will lead to anything seriously violent. What country seriously wants that?

Is this really not on the news networks?

Goddamn.

My tv isn't even hooked up because I hate Japanese tv. I dunno if it's on but I also know i don't have any 24 hr 'news' shows.

So what is this Yeonpyeong Island?

It is military or civillian, or both?

Do we have any idea why it would be the target of attack? Is there some strategic reason why the North would attack this site..... is it just to inflict civilian casualties? (that would be scary)
In a crazy kind of way, I can see the NK leadership thinking this will give them leverage. Clearly, they see some benefit in presenting themselves as irrationally violent and unpredictable. They know that SK has a LOT more to lose than they do if it comes to a fight, so they want to see how far they can push.

A country run by a crazy person?

Ok that partially answers my question... If Yeonpyeong Island was home to a recent military drill, then it's possible that the South did something to threaten the North's sovereignty during that drill, and they retaliated.

Frankly, that's a much better situation then the North just launching shells at civilians unprovoked. :/

MSNBC is so shitty for breaking news. Always the last to catch up. I was hoping CNN here would broadcast their international channel or something instead of dumb reruns.

North Korea

What's the point of covering this on a TV channel at this hour? Something that is absolutely and without a doubt monumental and catastrophic makes sense (people would wake up for that), but this hasn't escalated into anything serious. No point in putting this on TV when the few people following news at this hour are probably doing so on the internet (and it's on CNN's website).

Of course, this is giving the big news sites too much credit for breaking news, given the advent of Twitter and the blogosphere. CNN, Fox News and their ilk are the past and will stay the past.

North Korea should have been taken out years ago. These maniacs have killed and kidnapped civilians like nobodies business for 40 years, and gotten away with it by holding the South hostage. Why anyone thinks this situation is going to get any better is beyond me.

North Korea? They sure didn't give a fuck when they fired that artillery.

Shit...here comes the next big psychotic fiasco out of Kim Jong Il. That nutjob needs put down. Kind of makes that whole Justin Bieber tour vote that elected to send him to North Korea even worse too.

Kind of reminds me of Israel, except the circumstances are different.

most-artillery-sites-wont-reach-seoul-but-at-least-17-larger-guns-will.jpg

NK has 17 long range artilery guns that can reach Seoul and start bombarding, as well as mobile artilery that can be moved closer to DMZ to start bombarding. As well as the entire DMZ saturated with artilery file (as shown in the first pic)

He's not crazy.

Kim Jong Il's self-delusional hype is actually a tool of domestic control, nuts as it appears to us outside of it. Same goes for the rampant militarism in the face of overwhelming odds against them: it lends itself to political legitimacy at home.

Hmm.. might have actually been an accident. Either that or they just needed a new reel of propaganda.
Firing 200+ artillery shells on a piece of disputed land is not an accident.

Al Jazeera says no reports of new shelling in last hour.
Yeah, Al Jazeera is only talking about the return fire from the South. Nothing on any continued shelling by the North.

And once again for the new page, Al Jazeera English Live Streaming.

South Korea won't do anything and the North knows it. Because, Seoul would be destroyed in minutes if an all out war happens. S. Korea is dumb to have their capital city within mortar shelling range. That's why N. Korea has the South by the balls no matter how more powerful or advance the South vs North.

my ass.

they're talking about it on CNN now.

If North Korea sinking a frigate and killing dozens of sailors didn't provoke war, I don't know what will. South Korea just has too much to lose to go to war with Korea, never mind the economic meltdown that would happen when reunification happens afterwards.

EDIT: CNN International is rebroadcasting BBC. http://justin.tv/hoctoggle

The NK Air Force have MiG-29's and in capable hands are able to match F-15 planes. They could be there within minutes, carpet bomb, then be back for dinner.

Well then the US better be ready to destroy them all simultaneously. Maybe the US should illegally and secretly place nukes in satellites over NK to do an orbital bombardment or something.

again reliable is the key word all of their missile tests have been failures and why would they even try firing at Japan? They don't SK, US, and JP all at their front door.

Yeah, those old fogeys hundreds of years ago were so dumb to put Seoul where it is.

do you guys really think they'd bombard seoul? wouldnt that be suicide?
If this all really turned into war, then yeah, Seoul would be probably the first spot to receive fire. Or somewhere around the DMZ, dunno.

yea, gonna have to agree with this. it's hard to start a fight when you have so much to lose.
