I've been flipping through all of these "news" channels and fucking nothing. They sure as hell would have a breaking report if someone stole a car and drove it on the highway.

Sure the DMZ is at full alert and on lock down and of course Obama is being woken up. You don't just shell a US ally and not tell the president about the situation.
Yep. DMZ is fucking lockdown town right now and Bam's in the Situation room wearing his bunny slippers.

To those who are talking about an all out war:

Are you people not aware that North Korea has nuclear weapons?

Yes, the military doctrine of "mutually assured destruction" would suggest that neither side would resort to the use of nukes, but given how much more powerful the US military is than their military, a conventional war that threatened the regime could lead to a "use them or lose them" situation...

Basically what that means is the US can't just invade North Korea and overthrow the NK regime, because they would use their nukes to take out South Korea and Japan.
they still don't have a reliable delivery system AFAIK so its moot

There is no need to liberate NK. Just blow the fuck out of all their military and weapons sites and the capital city to hopefully kill their leaders. Once they have nothing, ignore the humanitarian mess. China should landmine it's side of the NK border to prevent mass refugees in a less obvious way than straight gunning them down. SK already has miles of landmines in the DMZ keeping refugees out so they're ok. If a government somehow hobbles itself together in the aftermath, they'll beg for help under any terms.
i said goddamn. I could see an argument for taking out the NK regime once and for all, but that scenario is kind of sadistic.

Didn't NK sink a South Korean naval ship a few months ago killing SK troops? This sucks, but people need to calm down. Unless they start sending troops across the DMZ there won't be full hostilities. If they really wanted to re-start the war Seoul would already be smoldering rubble. The chance of open, full scale hostilities is as likely as Israel and Palestine reaching a pece agreement.
How many lumps can the south take before some type of retaliation?

Honestly this kind of feels like 9/11. I was on a message board early in the morning before heading to work on 9/11. I'm not sure if it was GAF or IGN as I don't remember when I transitioned. But I remember reading a breaking news forum thread, not realizing what was going on at first as no one knew but slowly news (posts) started coming in and getting progressively worse.

Same feeling right now. I really really hope this doesn't go down the same way... or worse. :(

Maybe I'm overreacting but it's a weird same feeling.

Translator widget says "North Korea provocation is horrible and Real which is a war atmosphere."

Why can't the US just fire a few nukes over NK to blanket NK in an EMP. Are NK's missles shielded from EMPs? NK's nukes would be useless without missles. Besides, the last missle test NK did, the missle went off course and sank into the ocean without detonating.

Oh shit...isn't South Korea where the studio that does Avatar is located? Geez, this is gonna fuck with Legend of Korra.

WTF? What does that matter? That "facts on the ground" are that North Korea has nuclear weapons and could use them if seriously threatened.
Official US recognition of North Korea as a nuclear state is completely irrelevant... I don't even understand why you would bring that up. Like, are they not allowed to use their nukes until we recognize them as a nuclear state? We don't even recognize our ally Israel as a nuclear state.

it was a typo sorry

what i meant was the context has to do with north korea + being scared

as stated by others using internet translators i'm guessing something about being attacked by north korea and the person who wrote it is being scared

i already admitted my korean isn't very good and I don't trust translators to translate full phrases because they're often wrong

Wouldn't work. Both Korea's would be effected. If you knock out their electronics they'll do a land invasion of SK. The US soldiers stationed there would have to fight with just the rifles in their hands.

It may have something to do with Seoul (and really all of South Korea) being really fucking close to North Korea.

No, when I say the US does not recognize NK as a nuclear power I mean the US does not believe they have the capability to deliver a nuclear strike. Those are the "facts on the ground".

the problem with that was

that there was no decisive proof that NK did it. they did not declare anything

this time they are openly firing.

Maybe so but it's the only way this will ever get resolved. NK will keep pushing, and use the fact that they can attack SK and are slowly building a nuclear arsenal to prevent anyone from retaliating. This will go on for decades, and NK is only getting more dangerous with further reach of their nuclear missles with time. The time to act is now. It sucks for the civilians of NK but the civilians of allied countries take priority. How hospitable China wants to be to refugees is up to them.

The most we'll get is border skirmishes, some small-scale aerial combat (no bombing of cities or major infrastructure), shelling across the border, etc.
You seem to know quite a bit about this; do we, the U.S., have any viable way of bringing nukes down before they hit?

1 confirmed killed.

RT @W7VOA: South Korea's foreign affairs ministry tweeting about the Asian Games while the country is under attack. Unbelievable.

So what is this Yeonpyeong Island?

It is military or civillian, or both?

Do we have any idea why it would be the target of attack? Is there some strategic reason why the North would attack this site..... is it just to inflict civilian casualties? (that would be scary)

cable news still hasnt caught up? what?

This won't escalate any further, just another incident in a long string of them, it's in nobody's interest that war occurs on the Korean peninsula.

Details are also fuzzy at the moment so waiting to hear more from both sides about what happened, should be funny to read the hyperbole and vitriol from Rodong Sinmun's commentary on the matter in a few days from KCNA :lol

Damage control hun

not in anyone's interest to start a mass panic if this can be averted

SK runs military drills there, and that is what they were finishing when NK began artillery fire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeonpyeong

Yeonpyeong Island is a group of South Korean islands in the Yellow Sea, located about 80 km west of Incheon and 12 km south of the coast of Hwanghae Province, North Korea. The main island of the group is Daeyeonpyeong Island, also referred to simply as Yeonpyeong Island, with an area of 7.01 km² and a population of 1,176 (1999). The other inhabited island is Soyeonpyeong Island, with a small population and an area of 0.24 km².[1]
The island group constitutes Yeonpyeong-myeon, one of the subdivisions of Ongjin County, Incheon, South Korea.
Yeonpyeong lies near the Northern Limit Line and only 12 km from the North Korean coastline. Because of its location and the rich fishing in nearby waters, it has been a point of tension between the two Korean governments. South Korea has stationed 1000 soldiers on the islands, and two naval skirmishes have occurred nearby, in 1999 and 2002.[2][3]
On November 23, 2010, North Korea fired dozens of rounds of artillery at and near the island, injuring at least two people.[4] Four South Korean soldiers were reported wounded by the artillery fire
