North Korea launches missile that passes over Japan

Sigh. I'm not dismissing this as a thing of nothing. But NK has been doing this for a while now. Kim has everything to lose by attacking a major US ally. These launches always seem to make GAF go into panic mode. Chill out.

Launching a missile into the sea of Japan =/= as launching one that literally flies over Japanese soil. Those are quite different in terms of significance and level of escalation. I don't think it means that WW3 will break out, but it's not something people should accept or treat as ho hum.

I can't believe something like this could happen in this day and age. I really hope that if this escalates, they don't take the conflict over an entire country of innocent people.

It flew over another country.
Unless Japan wants to start nuclear armageddon over a missile that lands in the water east of them your post is nonsense

So if someone takes a gun and aims it just above your head, then shoots said gun, that's not a indication of violence towards you?

This would make sense if it wasn’t NK, the most unhinged member of the nuclear club.

Which is exactly why people shouldn't jump to immediate conclusions that it was a missile meant to kill people.

South Korea would be fucked if we were all that impulsive.

A missile was just fired over Japan. Please let me know what conclusions we should reach.

Do you see me calling this a game?! It's deadly serious but people here need to stop loosing their minds over every NK missile launch. We had the same mass hysteria over on the India/China thread when both countries started sabre rattling. That has now been defused.

Sorry, I know you're scared but NK just committed an act of war so

You comparing the North Korea situation to the confrontation between India and China is funny :)

OVER Japan?

I wonder if they even intended for that.

Naaaah. They just program the rocket to fly in whatever direction it feels like.

This isn't like every other NK missile launch

It flew directly over Japan

You are seriously not getting it. Over land where people are. Over land belonging to a nation that has a defense agreement with the US. THIS HAS NOT HAPPEN BEFORE. If they did this to the US NK land would be a nuclear waste hazard zone. Stop telling people to chill out if you don't fully understand what's going on. They didn't aim this missile into the sea. The people of Japan probably just had the shit scares out of them and you're that one dude from the meme waving people off saying nothing to see here.

we are all "hysterical" because we are discussing it and pointing out that it is an escalation... uhh ok.

Maybe my Geography is bad but isn't Guam south of Japan?

Not to perpetuate the idea that Guam is their intended target but yes Guam IS south of Japan. However, NK is north of Japan so it isn't impossible that the missile would fly OVER the North part of Japan, as it did, in route to Guam.

Whoa, over Japan?? Yeah that's different than usual. As others have said, wonder if that was intentional. Stay safe anyone in Japan GAF and all others there.

Guarantee China is on the phone with NK right now bitching them out over this.

They know that Japan could take this as an act of aggression, if not an act of war, by purposely violating their airspace this way.

NK has never actually fired over another country, have they?

It did back in 2009.....

North Korea defied demands from Japan, South Korea and the United States not to go ahead with a planned launch of what Pyongyang said would carry into space an experimental communications satellite.

The United States says North Korea launched a Taepodong- 2 missile which flew into the Pacific Ocean over northern Japan.

Japan says no debris has apparently fallen on its territory after what it calls a provocative rocket launch. Japan has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council later in the day to discuss the event, which it and others say violates a U.N. resolution

I have friends that live in Japan, sorry that I don't trust in the judgement of a proven deranged individual with too much power on his hands. Hey, if you have kids why not let them be babysit by a known child abuser? They have everything to lose by doing something, so that means they're 100% fine right? And you wouldn't get anxious if you got into your house with the babysitter in his/her undies while your child are crying, right? Because, geez, how could a deranged individual do something illogical?

By shutting the fuck up.

Yeah, flying a missle over a landmass is WELL beyond mere dickwaving.

I am more curious on where it's actually going at this point

So realistically speaking what do you do if you're the US or other Allies of Japan? Short of nuking NK I don't see how you'd retaliate. The country is already in ruins and you can only sanction them so much before it becomes apparent they don't care.

Have a feeling this will be ignored by the US, mostly. Which is a shame. Japan and the US are close allies, I would think that this would be unacceptable in some way. Anyone with definitive answers (not speculation please) want to chime in?

Definitive answers on a gaming forum? All we can hope to provide is speculation on our limited world view of military warfare.

I remember the days when Russia shot missiles over the US

wait

no

that would be a declaration of war if they tried that.

What NK is doing is aggression. And the world is letting him do it.

Emergency warning still in place and now people weighing in on what the hell just happened.
As I said before this has never happened like this.
So it's kinda a big deal.

can we please star shooting them down?

It's problematic. It's not easy to intercept an ICBM. Missile defense systems like the ones required to kill a North Korean ICBM are not battle tested and even scheduled, official tests have failed before.

If Japan or South Korea try to destroy an ICBM and fail, it'd tell Lil Kim that they can strike any of those countries right away. Which he probably won't, because he's not a suicidal maniac, but it would only embolden him from then on.
