"I don't disagree that what Artest got was a acculmative deal, and that's a rationale I agree with. I just think he got too much."

He didn't get enough. If the Pacers had any dignity they would release him from their team. He went well beyond and further than anyone I've ever seen in a sporting event. You can't rationalize his behavior. It was beyond the bounds of a professional athlete and as such he shouldn't be one anymore. I figure he will be in jail for assault within the next few months.

Bionic...move doooown the bench.

:lol

With Big Ben and the Steelers owning the NFL, I have all my attention on the Steelers right now.

Speaking of the Lakers, Konex when is Vlade coming back? Will be very interesting to see how long it takes for him to get into a rhythm with the rest of the Lakers. I will say that our turnovers will go down drastically if he is in shape when he comes back and he will help our offense a lot. The only question is if he can keep it up all season and deep into the playoffs. :D

John Green of West Bloomfield Township was the fan who threw the cup at Artest, Gorcyca said. The prosecutor identified Green -- a former next-door neighbor -- by repeatedly watching footage of the brawl.

Green, however, told reporters he didn't throw the cup.

``I wish the whole thing didn't happen,'' he said. ``I'm sure the NBA players that got involved in it wish it never happened, the fans never wished that it had happened. I know I don't. It was awful, it was ugly.''

Pistons chief executive Tom Wilson said Green is a season-ticket holder and will be banned from The Palace.

And he has a criminal record too.

2003 -- Operating under the influence of liquor/operating while visibly impaired (second offense)

1989 -- Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder

1989 -- Escape from prison

1986 -- Carrying concealed weapons

1986 -- Uttering and publishing, which is using a false, forged, altered or counterfeit record, deed or instrument to injure or defraud.

Yet another solid argument for cutting down on parole. :D Artest could've been shanked! :O

Bobbit is a guy who didn't make it off the pre-season roster due to space. I think I like Tierre Brown's game better if he can actually not lose control in the lane. Bobbit is a better shooter though

Loki, there are many Lakers fans in this thread besides me and Bionic :D

Oh lord...you think Tierre "Preseason" Brown is better than this guy? He must be HORRIBLE.

Damnit, some questionable calls at the end against the Spurs. But the truth is the team is reverting to their usual start of the season form. Yuck!

Did Artest even throw a punch in the stands? I haven't seen the video in a few days but I honestly don't remember.

There are some rumors that Artest might be traded.

It might not bad be a bad move for a shitty team like the Bulls or Bobcats who are going nowhere this year. Big risk, but the upside is huge especially if you have the right coach for Artest.

Malik Rose for Artest! Haha... Hell, even though he's a bit nutty, I wouldn't mind having Artest. Artest, Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, etc. etc. would be one hell of a line-up.

No coach can contain Artest.

<Bob Costas> You talked about retirement in the next 2-3 years, could you retire with the streak still intact?

<Jordan> Nah! My love is strong for this game, and I'll continue playing if my love is still strong

:(

Hakeem, I know you were involved in the murder of MJ's dad!! :(

Yeah, that's obvious, but what did he have to do with Jordan's gambling "problem?"

The NBA has announced that Grant Hill has been named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 21, 2004. It marks the sixth time during Hill’s career that he has been named the NBA’s Player of the Week. Hill led Orlando to a perfect 2-0 record this week, averaging 30.0 ppg., 6.0 rpg. and 5.5 apg. in 41.0 minpg. He also shot 67.6 percent (23-of-34) from the floor.

:D :D :D What a great comeback story! I'm praying that ankle stays healthy and Grant can have a lengthy career.

It's pretty easy to justify...the man was attacked in a hostile environment, and the only time he took any real swings was on the court when a guy faced him up. Stephen Jackson is the guy who's actions I won't justify...he started throwing bombs for no reason at all.

And I doubt the Pacers could just release him, unless they want to eat whatever money is owed him on his contract. Don't see any of the players doing jail time either, with the exception of Jermaine O'Neal with his ridiculous sucker shot. They'll be lawsuits aplenty though, coming from all sides.

Malone, furthermore, is not expected to consider a return to the NBA until the new year after undergoing knee surgery in June, according to agent Dwight Manley.

"He's physically there, or almost there," Manley told ESPN.com. "He's doing really well. It's just a question of when he wants to make a decision. He has some family plans through the holidays."

ESPN.com reported in August that Malone had informed new Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich that, if he plays a 20th season, he would only sign with the Lakers. Malone and Manley later had lunch with Lakers owner Jerry Buss on the eve of training camp to let Buss know that Malone wouldn't sign with another team.

But San Antonio and Minnesota continue to check in regularly with Malone, according to league sources, promising to save a roster spot for him.

Manley said the Lakers remain a virtual certainty to sign Malone, if he does play, with Malone reluctant to move his family out of the neighborhood he shares with Kobe Bryant. Manley said Malone's wish to stay in the Western Conference rules out the Miami Heat as well as the Pacers.

"In all my conversations with Karl," Manley said, "he just didn't have a desire to play in the East."

Malone should comeback after the holidays is a good sign.

in other Lakers news Divac most likely won't be dressed against the Bucks game. He did not practice on monday. Kobe missed four practices already with plantar fasci. Cook and Gump came down with the flu.

That ebay item is classic, if only for the description -
They're calling it the greatest fan/player altercation of all-time....."MALICE AT PALACE"

The insane Ron Artest of the Indiana Pacers attempted to kill a spectator at the Palace of Auburn Hills after a fan threw a blue plastic cup at him.

Bravely, my friend and I fought through the random, wild haymakers being thrown by Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, Fred Jones, the Pistons peanut vendor, Ben Wallace's brother, Jermaine O'Neal, the guy in the clown wig, the guy in the Wallace shirt and the nerdy kid who got attacked by Artest, to retrieve this magnificent piece of history.

No sports collection will be complete without the additon of this vintage emo, punk, retro championship collector's edition beer cup. Simply a must for all Artest fans.

Chairs were flying, dustpans were wielded and right crosses were landed. It all "allegedly started" with this cup. No reserve.

My goodness, Artest's song sucks ASS. He needs to take advantage of this newfound leisure time and hire a producer...or six.

Jordan having to retire because of gambling is probably the lamest conspiracy theory I've ever heard.

American sports fans, particularly those who consistently shell out the hundreds of dollars it takes to attend a professional game, are fed up with black professional basketball players in particular and black professional athletes to a lesser degree.

Yeah, let's cut through all the garbage and get to the real issue. The people paying the bills don't like the product, don't like the attitude, don't like the showboating and don't like the flamboyance. The NBA, which relies heavily on African-American players, is at the forefront of fan backlash. Stern realizes this, and that's why, spurred on by the Detroit brawl, he is reacting decisively.

What the players must come to grips with is that just because race is an element in the backlash, that doesn't mean the backlash is fueled by racism. We're witnessing a clash of cultures. A predominately white fan base is rejecting a predominately black style of play and sportsmanship.

Who is on the right side of this argument? The group that is always right in a capitalistic society. The customer. That's why Stern, endorsed by his owners, came down hard on the players. He stated that the NBA would take steps to ensure that its fans improved their behavior. But Stern knows the real solutions are in the hands of his players. A good businessman caters to his audience. They don't play country music at my dad's inner-city bar for a reason.

Stern's players must bow to the desires of their fan base.

In general, African-American athletes have always been — for lack of a better description — more expressive and flamboyant on the field of play. Go back to the Negro Leagues — showboating was part of the entertainment package. The Negro Leagues catered to a predominately black fan base.

We, black people, begged for integration. We demanded the right to play in the major leagues, the NBA, the NFL, the NHL. These leagues accommodate a white audience. As long as the customer base is white, the standard for appropriate sportsmanship, style of play and appearance should be set by white people.

This is fair, particularly when the athletes/employees earn millions of dollars and have the freedom to do whatever — and I mean whatever — they want when they're not playing or practicing.
I think he has a point - until the current group of kids raised on the And1-style of bullshit grows up and demands to see the same play in the big leagues. The present day ticketholders aren't part of that same culture, and don't want to see it. Racism or just a cultural divide? You decide!

Bobby Knight could!

I seriously doubt Bobby Knight could hold any power over pampered NBA stars. Scared college kids, yeah, since they don't want their future careers jeapordized by rocking the boat. Olympic Dream Teams, maybe, because they need a high level of unity and harmony towards everyone in the unit to get dem medals. But not with pro guys who bascially see their jobs as a paid hobby and largely do what they want come game time.

I'm guessing he doesn't make the shot, or gets blocked by Kirilenko. Still, that's hilarious. Defensive specialist indeed.

heres bill simmons take on what should be done:
But do you really think the Players Association will allow one of their guys to lose an entire season of paychecks? Please. If he's not back by March 15, I'll be absolutely stunned. (Note: The union is already appealing the suspensions; the league claims it's an on-court incident, which cannot be appealed. The union will no doubt counter that it became an off-court incident. Stay tuned.)

Anyway, here's my compromise idea: For the rest of the season, before every game, Artest gets wheeled out to midcourt like Hannibal Lecter -- you know, tied to one of those white stretchers and wearing a strait jacket and the metal facemask. Then, they untie him, and he gets to warm up with his team. I think this would get the message across to the fans -- stay away from this guy.
