After a week of previews and hands on impressions I personally don't think Marathon showed anything that special to make me want to play it, I love Bungie I played Destiny for years I still keep an eye on the game from time to time, so I don't know what do you guys think.

Edit: Thank you.

The Greeks thought marathons were literally DOA since the first man who ran one died after crossing the finish line. But what did they know.

Not a great sign that people who liked past Bungie shooters are paying attention, want something new to like from them, and are going meh

Or maybe this is one of those situations you let go of your old customers to chase a casual audience...but where's the phone version then?

I voted for "Moderate success, growth with updates." , but if only 4 pictures (so far) on Rule34 are anything to go by, I don't think it will be go for them.

Personally, I wish them success.

I'll be surprised if it's any sort of success. Not sure it will be cancelled in a couple of weeks Concord level bad but it's not going to be getting 40k after a year like Helldivers 2.

I predict this for Marathon

The progression on 3 maps might struggle initially, but if they can pump out a new map every 3 months then the game should gradually grow over time.

That said, you have to make the poll after the alpha.

...

Wait, you actually exist? :messenger_face_screaming:

I saw some people mentioning you, but I was under impression that you are just some meme, or urban legend.

It could become something over time if it's free. But at the moment it looks like absolutely nothing. Slightly better than Concord but nothing that people really want.

I suspect it will be like Skull & Bones where it's really not very popular and people forget about it but they keep supporting it out of necessity and the hope that it can find an audience somehow.

Nothing will ever fail like Concord.

It won't get shut down like Concord but it won't be a popular GAAS either. It will just sort of be there with little to no fanfare.

Depends on how willing Sony is to market it. If they market it like the cinematics and make enough influencers play and praise it, it will have a good start. If it has legs, no idea.

Watching the full playthrough vs the Bungie reveal videos changed my interpretation of this fully. It's a search party and PVE with PvP elements entangled. The reveal videos made it seem like a PVP sweatfest, but after further information has come forward it doesn't seem to be the case. As long as this remains a primarily PVE experience with some PvP aspects, I think this has a chance to do well. "Well", as in has a good following and is a successful game for Bungie even at a $40-50 price point and paid seasons. But if they swing this too far to PvP, I think its chances of flourishing are greatly diminished.

I expect it to do low numbers, obviously lose money, and not be successful. But it won't be a Concord repeat. They'll put in the time and effort on this one to see if they can turn it around. I think we'll all forget about it by Thanksgiving.

I would put it between the middle and bottom option. Bungie and First Party Sony both bring a decent sized fanbase that will literally play anything with the logo on it. I don't think they pull a single person in that isn't from either of those camps.

Game looks decent to me.

If internet doesn't try to drown it for shits and giggles, it could do 50 k concurrent players for a year or two.

Though, watching another Concord in the making could be too hard to resist for some.

Sony should stop using its Playstation branding on GAAS titles just to be sure.

I think it won't to be the next Fortnite, and that won't be as 'revolutionary' as were Halo or Destiny because the MP shooter market grew a ton, there's a ton of great competition and Bungie is rejecting their PvE only fans for Marathon, which will prevent Marathon from breaking the Helldivers 2 launch record.

But I think will be very successful, specially in the long term as they keep tweaking, improving, fixing and expanding it over time.

I think it will be the game that opens the extraction shooter to the masses being the first that makes it successful outside the super hardcore niche, and the first makes the subgenre very popular in console.

I think once people plays it enough to understand it most of the people criticing it now will end loving it. I think will get huge in Twitch and that will get people mostly from Destiny 2 PvP, extraction shooters, Apex Legend, Fortnite and PUBG.

I also predict that several of the doomers that are calling it a Concord 2 or Skulls & Bones 2 will become a meme and people will laugh at them.

As some others already said, it won't crash and burn nor it'll be a major success. It will kind of just keep existing.

How many Marathons threads do we need.
Comparing Marathon with Concord or Suicide Squad is crazy. This game will succeed, in time. Predicting DOA is people not knowing Bungie's last 10 years or general enthusiasm for Gaas.

Warhammer Darktide does 5K players on PC (#150), and Fatshark is one odd developer who leave their game to fend of from forest wolves and comes back in 2 years with 10 updates. The core mechanics were so good that even without content people played it for an year till it starts getting one. Do people think that game is a failure ? because its an excellent one.

Hunt Showdown does 12K players on PC (#95), people consider that game a success.
The Finals does 12K players also. There is no way Marathon with Bungie and 10 years of Destiny fanbase (even burned ones) will have this as DOA.

Voted for "Massive hit" because it is a AAA Sony first party blockbuster game

Why not wait until you actually play the game instead of picking & choosing how games will be before you even experience them. We are in strange times & I believe it will only hurt gaming in the end.

I personally want it to fail. This is, to me, the worst possible future Sony could have in video games, because if they are already spending 80% of their budget in making GaaS failures, they will certainly become a GaaS-exclusive company if they have one or two successes.

It's like Ubisoft, they don't do shit anymore other than Assassin's Creed. Sony won't do other shit other than to keep trying to have the next success. Like Hoyoverse.

But in reality, I do believe this will mirror The Suicide Squad. They won't cancel it right away, but it won't get to season 2 or 3.

In short, gaming has gone to shit.

It will release buggy, broken, and with little content, people will still buy it based off the name Bungie and will bitch online about how much they hate it despite continuing to play it every day

there will be reddit threads with comments that say "I'm enjoying it, the gameplay is amazing"

the same captive audience will collectively rage or celebrate every update depending on what the popular opinion is, while continuing to shovel money at Bungie.

Repeat step 3 for several years

It's a tough one. (Especially without knowing the price yet.)
I personally don't see any appeal in the PvPvE Extraction shooter genre and don't think it's all that big/popular.
But also... it's Bungie; they can throw money at streamers, Twitch drops and YouTube ads to draw more players in. I imagine we'll see a free weekend around Christmas.

It doesn't offer anything fresh or exciting, and I'm almost certain it'll suffer from the same lack of content we've seen in similar titles at launch

DOA is a bit too harsh but Bungie needs to step up and make something unique

To me it just look like another multiplayer squad game with really terrible choice of art style.

I don't even know why Bungie have to use the Marathon IP when it could have been Destiny 3.

I don't think you can ever judge an art style until you actually play a game, so I'm holding my opinion until then. I lived through the whole Wind Waker thing.

I just want to see that Bungie learned its lesson from Destiny's release. They have to add content season after season. New guns, new mods, a new map, etc. They can't kick this game out there and expect launch content to last a year or more. And there's no need for mid-season rebalancing if you're wiping everyone's stuff each season, unless it's a really extreme problem.

I do think there's a market for a game like this on console. The Division got an audience, but Massive fumbled it away. I'm planning to get into it.

I don't think it's going to fail like Concord, but that it will have a modest opening because of Bungie, then fall off over time to eventually get shut down after a year or two.

It won't bring that much of the Destiny audience because it's mainly PVP, and Bungie isn't the quickest or most consistent in producing good content.

Could be wrong, but the game just doesn't seem exciting based on internet reaction.

Yea I didn't vote. I need to play it at least to know.

You mean people wanting games to fail before they are released and based on a single trailer will hurt gaming? Yeah...sounds correct honestly.

Not F2P and without solo while the gunplay looks horrendous compared to CoD.

Is this 30fps? Everything seems to be happening at such a slow pace.

DoA.

The sooner this GAAS train derails the better. Let the kids go back to fortnite and men_in_boxes go back to working at mcdonalds

It's never going to derail. We got two new ones last year that blew up. People like them and that's just how it is.

It's like thinking SP games will be derailed because one of them fails.
