Now that we have RE4 what do you think of the original ver(s) of RE4 that got axed?

now that most of us have seen, played and experienced Capcom's final released version of Resident Evil 4 ~ Biohazard 4, in retrospect, what do you think about the early version of the game that got the axe?

actually there *might* have been two versions of RE4 that never saw the light of day. unless i screwed this up, the following 3 videos seem to show 2 different early RE4/BH4 games.

vids #1 and #3 are the almost the same if not exact. vid #2 is quite different-- I think it is the oldest RE4 footage of all-- it has the 'Cradle of the Progenitor Virus' theme and it is very cool. the black virus entity rocks.

what do you mean?

you didn't know that there was at least one version of RE4 / BH4 that got scrapped, right?

remember the RE4 media that came out in late 2002 and into 2003 ?
 
I've never played those other versions so I can't say what I think of them with absolute certainly in terms of the quality of the gameplay.

I liked the atmosphere of those old screens/vids more than I did/do of the new RE4, but in retrospect it doesn't matter - the RE4 we got is already so good that it's one of my favorite games of all time. I don't want to consider the alternatives because what we have is just so phenomenal that I worry that any major alterations at this stage would ruin the final product we have.
 
well I hope the original ver(s) of RE4 ~ BH4 do not goto waste. maybe we'll get one final GCN Resident Evil before RE5. Resident Evil X :D either on GCN or Rev. something to ease the LONG wait we will face before RE5 and you know it'll be a good 3-4 years before we see it.
 
Whoa, what's going on with that crazy nightvision thing and the uh, thing with the chain?

That seemed pretty intense, but judging from 2 minutes of videos I watched (and some parts I couldn't see because the gamma on my monitor is wacky), I like the one we got better.

And what was with that second commercial (the first link that worked/wasn't linked to the WM logo)? Do japanese commercials just have some guy saying keywords?

The first version's movies feature more impressive graphics and atmosphere without any doubt.
But maybe the game was ending up to be the same and old Biohazard game and the developers felt it was really time to change.
And now that RE4 is out we can say it was a good choice.
 
I'd like for that version of RE to still be released. I liked the hook guy that was chasing Leon around quite abit. The blue glow he gave off looked very cool.

This does remind me of the whole RE1.5 thing (Elza > Claire). That version looked really cool but got canned (at around 70% complete).

Guys do you agree with me or disagree with me that there seems to be two cancelled versions? do you think those two different early videos are of the same scrapped game, or each from different games? do they seem related to each other or what. ive never seen this discussed before.
 
I believe one of the developers stated that Resident Evil 4 was the fourth incarnation of the game. So in other words, they scrapped development three times before they wound up with the end result.

EDIT: This was in last month's EGM if someone can grab the direct quote. (I'm not at home now)

you're right.. they showed 2 versions and there's a 3rd version we never saw. This is the 4th iterations. The developer interview at IGN is AWESOME and covers a lot of the game very well.

they talked about the changes they made to the game + also to leon... how they changed his outfit/look/personality as the games changed (notice how leon is kinda casual... jacker+jeans) but he's us agent in RE4? The hair's also different.....

WHOA they scrapped it three freaking times? i was thinking once or twice. man that makes me want RE4 versions 1, 2 and 3 so bad now :lol :lol :lol

It would be too much to ask Capcom to be teh good soilder by finishing and releasing all the versions--or at least making them playable if not complete. put them into a Gamecube/PS2 directors cut or special edition or something.

but i'm sure this will never happen and the three scrapped RE4s will go the way of RE 1.5. sigh.
 
I'm disappointed that the original stuff did not show up in the final. :(

I think the very early showings still look better than the final game, for one thing, but I also really liked the environments shown. I especially like that strange industrial area. Also, the game seemed as if it might be scary (which the final is not). Oh, and that blue enemy with the chain shown in the one trailer looked wicked.

The final game is LOADED with variety, though, which is why I was actually kinda hoping and expecting that a lot of that early stuff would actually show up.

However, it really doesn't matter now, as the game is absolutely incredible and could be my GOTY for 2005.

It looks like the new view and stuff was going to be in the old version too. "The cradle of the progenitor virus" stuff would have been cool, but I am completely satisfied with the final product.

That flashlight looks pretty sweet. That could have added some much needed suspense at times.
But I'm definetly glad we got the game that we did.

I was actually wondering where the hell these videos went I used to have them on my PC but couldnt find them today and wanted to watch them


I think what were seeing here in the 3 videos are 2 games, but with the same idea, to me it really looks like they were going for the Ghost theme instead of Zombies with these 2 versions


I wonder if they dropped the ghost thing cause of the Fatal Frame series

I'm really interested in knowing where the story ideas where going for these versions and I'd LOVE to see video or images of the 3rd version that got scrapped


I can see why they canned them though, both videos even with the change of perspective still seem very much more of the same, It almost looked like the Mansion dinning hall in the one video so I can understand that they wanted to go with something different and canned these ones
 
Looking at that second set of old screen shots you can see they were using the laser targeting allready in that early version so the camera angle was most deffinetly there

I'd love to get to talk to the developers about these older versions

I'd love to see some screen shots or videos of the RE4 that became Devil May Cry
 
I wouldn't want the final version to be altered in any way whatsoever. The mansion looked cool, but it had that wonky camera that I hate so much.

Yes, RE 1.5 looked cooler than what turned out to be 2. Even though 2 was great at the time.

There was another pictures IIRC that was similar from early RE4 and REMake... A room with huge columns in fire? I'll go look for it...
 
those pics and vids made me want resident evil 4. over time i guess i had forgotten about them.

now that i have seen them i want it even worse. when will it come out????
just remove leon , stick jill in it throw in some real zombies and scare the shit out of me!

i love the RE4 we got but i wish it was scary.
 
It's very possible for Capcom to revisit the scenarios of the first two builds sometime in the near future, although obviously we won't be seeing Leon around for awhile. Perhaps Jill or Chris can replace Leon in the poltergeist RE4 version.
 
The original version looks way better than what shipped this month (graphically speaking). It's really a shame that the engine (or the Gamecube) couldn't handle the realtime lighting. That's what I think is most missing from the current game. I wonder if the originals were powered off of a souped-up dev system or if it really was running like that on stock Gamecubes...

I liked the progenitor virus idea much better....I don't see why they had to get away from zombies. If RE4 revolved around another Umbrella outbreak (and had everything that the new game does), that would be just fine with me. Seems a little hokey that Code Veronica ended on a "Now it's time to take Umbrella down!!" sort of cliffhanger, and now we find out that there was no exciting confrontation.....they just went bankrupt :lol

the first one yeah it is in RE4, but i noticed it was in the background of one of the Notes, and not an actual area.

What?! The GameCube can handle realtime lighting... The final version of Resident Evil 4 has some lightning effect, but there aren't has prominent has in the early version. Maybe Capcom scrapped the idea of using a flashlight after Id Software got so many complaints about it in Doom III? Maybe the game was less frightning...

I agree with what you're saying about the progenitor virus thought, it would have been cool. I haven't finished the game yet, but I can guess that this is far from being the last game from the series...

i heard from a few that the reason these 1st versions were scrapped was because they decided to port it to PS2 so they changed it up so there would not be a huge graphic difference when ported .

It's not too hard to believe it was running on a stock Gamecube. Get rid of the vast environments and hordes of enemies from the shipped game and you have a lot of freed up resources that can used to make the graphics that much better. Besides, the shipped game doesn't look that much worse, if screens are anything to go by (I haven't played it yet).
 
I think the backgrounds look much better, but the characters, especially leon, look like shit, in the old versions. :/

While I definitely agree the lighting was better in the earlier vids of the scrapped versions, the current RE4 is no slouch. Later in the game, in the indoor areas, the lighting is great, especially with the moonlight creeping through the windows, casting light on you and objects.
 
The first version obviously had a lot less to render since it wasn't an open environment so thats why some of the lighting was cut back imo. I do think the early versions were done on actual gamecube hardware.

no way. Its hard enough to believe the ps2 could even do what RE:4 does now without major sacrifices. The ps2 port probably wasn't even a thought at capcom until this past fall.

They wouldn't had changed the whole story for simple graphic conversion purposes...

Personally, I liked what they did with this one.
IMO La Plagas is much creepier than the T-Virus stuff. Naturally born viruses and parasites are scary in their own right because idea of these killer viruses and parasites are somewhat grounded in reality. I thought it was clever of Capcom to include in one of Luis' notes a description of real parasites that control their host, making the horror more tangible than your typical supernatural, alien, or experiment gone wrong scenario.
 
The old versions look a lot like the traditional RE games. Cramped areas with few enemies. I think Capcom decided to go the "More is better" approach by giving us bigger environment and more enemies, while sacrificing the lighting and bg quality. Comparing the end result, our RE4, to the old REs, I think they made the right decision, although I kind of wish they found a way to keep more of the RE atmosphere.

Still, RE4 might be my favorite game of all time, so the changes obviously worked. ;)

That's just a theory. RE4 vs. SH4 really summed it up best--extra fancy effects were sacrificed for a drasticly different approach to the RE formula. The graphics served the gameplay as oppossed to merely "enhancing" it.
 
The final game has objects that are lighted by lights, but nothing casts a shadow =( Didn't even the RE1 and RE0 games find a way to project shadows into prerendered backgrounds?

Is all that stuff in the "parasites" memo true?
