This, SE should have gotten a KH title on the Wii for sure this gen, would have sold bucket loads during the Wii's prime time.

what's funny is that they finally released kh re:com in dec 2008 (!) for ps2 (!!),why they didn't just port that to wii is beyond me

No, I don't think it does. But good question.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 24k (10% of physical sold) digital copies sold of NSMB2.

Edit:

I also believe that if Square Enix had released even a port of KH 1 + 2 on Wii during its height of popularity in 2008 it probably would've done wonders for keeping the IP relevant instead of continuing to release different spin-offs on every single handheld and not giving their fanbase a specific home.

No, I don't think it does. But good question.

With digital sales (assuming it is a bigger chunk then in Japan), NSMB2 had a similar first month to NSMB's first month. I have no idea why people are acting like NSMB2 had a bad performance, it's actually one of the bright spots of the month.

Can we all finally agree that iOS has taken a sizable chunk out of the portable handheld market?

I was holding out hope, but I reluctantly have to agree now.

Wow, I REALLY thought Sleeping Dogs would outsell Darksiders due to positive hype and mainstream appeal (ie GTA in China is an easier sell to a wider audience). Glad to see Darksiders chart let alone at number 1.

Ayup. Sad times, these are.

This prompted me to go and read a KH3D synopsis. I wish I hadn't. Nothing will ever recapture the joy of the original, will it? :/
Nope. Every since they brought in the Boy Love Thirteen and the Deviantart kids (and Nomura himself) became obsessed with them, the series was finished, done, destroyed (in terms of characters and plots, at least).

I imagine most of them with make 3DS and/or mobile/social games targeted at the local market outside the few with brands so large they can still do well on Western consoles (a la Resident Evil).

The main hope is that the former still gets localized.

We've already had this discussion, but I imagine that console series that were strong on the HD platforms this generation will continue to do so.

But I really doubt the feasibility of Japanese publishers really taking advantage of PS4/720 specs for anything besides surefire Western hits like Resident Evil.

Hah, didn't someone bet in pre-Darksiders II topic that it wouldn't make the top 10? I need to keep better track of this stuff.

Good job, Vigil and THQ. Awesome game, despite the bugs.

Well,

Industry Gamers said:
Speaking at the Wedbush Morgan conference last night, executive vice president and chief financial officer Paul Pucino noted that most new owned IP at THQ would need to hit this mark: "When you just think in terms or profitability, the owned IP, there's a threshold of break-even of about 2 million units per game, so you have to sell somewhere in the area of 2 million copies of a game like Homefront to break even. Once you get past that you're generating incremental operating margins as high as 60 per cent."

Gamasutra said:
Though the Ultimate Fighting Franchise games appeared to be one of THQ's few successes, the company says it sold the brand's exclusive license to Electronic Arts because it failed to break even on the latest release.

THQ management told Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter that UFC Undisputed 3, which released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation in February, fell short of hitting its break-even point of 2 million copies sold.

...

South Park requires a relatively smaller investment than other titles due to its simple animation. That project's break-even point is also 2 million units, though the publisher believes it can sell well above that, THQ told Pachter.

I'm feeling pretty safe that Darksiders 2 needs to hit 2 million copies globally to continue.

240k? for a new MARIO gmae?

Yep, pretty decent for first week sales.

Well, the absolute hugest games are still doing fine.

I mean Diablo 3 sold 10 million copies, Mass Effect 3 did quite well, and Minecraft is doing fantastic. Madden is reporting an increase year over year so far as well.

It's everything else.

Yeah, it just keeps going back to what Iwata said in late 2008/early 2009. Top game sales stay the same in a recession, but the lower-tier wishlist games are what mostly suffer.

Diablo, besides being a huge franchise, really showed the value of near indefeatable DRM on PC imo, but it does show hardcore thrives on PC. Minecraft is almost part of that new DD, low price, PC-esque trend than tradition retail. ME3 did well? I dont remember. Madden I give you. So basically only 1 of those 4 (Madden) offhand is a member of the "traditional retail hardcore console" market that seems to be in such danger.

It's likely same as last month

Wii - 70k
PS3 - 140k

Roughly ...

Oh, I just saw this from Frazier's release.

"However, compared to July 2012, the 3DS and the PS3 both experienced unit sales increases in August."

Although it may be relatively inconsequential.

Minecraft 360 ended up being incredibly lucrative! Oh how I wish I had that with 4 player splitscreen back during my kid days spendin the night with friends. Must be great fun!

I'm expecting about twenty developers total to really take advantage of the hardware and drown most everyone else out at retail in the West.

Kingdom Hearts...this is what Square Enix gets for making a convoluted story line and constantly putting important story elements in handheld spinoffs for over a generation. They screwed themselves starting with Chain of Memories on the GBA.

Might as well scrap the whole storyline and start fresh with new characters.

Sure, it's not bad, and I expect it to sell well for years to come. It stands to become one of the must-buy titles for every new 3DS purchase from here on out.

To start with, it sold ~250K units on a base of 5.4 million systems, or to about 5% of 3DS owners. With time, that share will probably grow dramatically. Do we know U.S. sales of NSMB1? If it's ~9 million, then it reached roughly 17% of the NDS base.

The real stinger to that was that they didn't even bother with the Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, which would have required little to no localization effort.

God, I hate Square-Enix. Unless Dragon Quest is involved, but I think that's just Hori being Hori.

Well, Mass Effect did 1.3 million in its first NPD month.

I mean, that's not off the charts, but it is still quite possibly the highest retail number this year since Diablo 3 had a large digital slant.

Max Payne 3 did about 440K for comparison.

Ugh. Will be fascinating to see. I *think* Nintendo could get some traction with some developers and publishers that literally cannot afford to take another full leap. But I've been wrong a lot this last generation so who knows.

'During the month of August, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: “Darksiders II,” “NCAA Football 12,” “Sleeping Dogs,” “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops II.” (Source: NPD Group, August 2012)'

MEGATON!! Black Ops II was on retail for the 360 in August and no one noticed

ghst

thanks for the laugh
it really didn't seem like that long ago that numbers just shy of a million for a AAA release were heralded as "underwhelming" and "not meeting expectations".

atleast THQ can throw "#1 best selling title for august" to their baying shareholders, as pyrrhic a victory as it may be.

So Vita did not see an increase over July, which puts it under 47K for the month. Okay.

I feel the risk here is that it's essentially trying to reconstruct the retail middle tier that exploded and seems to have been rejected by consumers already.

I mean, I think Nintendo is far better off trying to sign as many publishers as they can digitally since those are games that still seem to succeed with lower production values and publishers seem far more willing to take risks with them.

Quite a few of the major successes this year (Minecraft, Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Trials Evolution) have all been digital only or digital heavy titles, so I imagine publishers are more willing than ever to try this.

I believe it's tied to the first sentence of the statement (the Vita wasn't around back last year).

“Of the platforms that were on the market last August, none realized a year-over-year sales increase. However, compared to July 2012, the 3DS and the PS3 both experienced unit sales increases in August.”

Although it could very well be less.

They didn't bite this generation though, when Nintendo offered them a way out of this AAA death spiral. Instead, most devs continued on with the arms race.

I think its pretty well known that square enix is a bunch of fuck ups

Heh, yeah. I suppose.

I guess this is how big FF fans feel. I like FF, but I've never really loved it. KH however is a franchise I love, and it's extremely frustrating to see Square just destroy the franchise like this when they could have easily prevented such a fall.

Seriously, not even a HD Collection! A disc just containing KHI, II, and Birth by Sleep would have really been satisfying. Especially if it was the Final Mix versions, people would have been over the moon to get those. Or at the very least BbS could have been put on PSN.

Instead....nothing.

I'm pretty confident that it will get there when the total global numbers are counted, but I don't think it will be enough for there to be a sequel. They will probably start on something that doesn't require as many resources with a better return on investment.

And what is up with the betrayalton posts regarding the game, they were going to give every horseman a different feeling game gameplaywise....heck it was rumored that DS3 would be a third or first person shooter.

That looks really awesome for Kingdom Hearts.

That NSMB2 number also looks pretty good considering it was out for only 11 days. I wonder if it can carry any of that momentum into September. Or, more importantly, November.

Out of curiosity, how does everyone think the top 5 will look like in November? I'm thinking:

1. Black Ops 2
2. Halo 4
3. Assassin's Creed 3 (Am I underestimating AC?)
4. NSMB 2 (probably a 3DS XL bundle on Black Friday)
5. NSMB U?

Am I missing any other huge titles in November? Just Dance? Do the sports games usually get a huge bump? Is 2 Marios cracking the top 5 in the cards?

I think November could hurt, Christmas will be okay but 2013 should see it find its feet again.
NSMB had such great legs cause its an easy pick up and a good pick up. NSMB2 could benefit if the WiiU is a better success too.

My main worry is that the problems in the handheld market are not solely in the handheld market, but we'll (hopefully) have the tests of that soon.

True, but I think the overall atmosphere is a lot different.

No ones tried anything on 3DS. No one. They haven't tried or asked for ideas. Even if they did they'd be too stupid to take ideas that wouldn't work anywhere else and use them on the 3DS; they'd just port their bro-games.

WiiU has Ubisoft as it stands; but thats more about not making the mistakes made with the Wii. Now, other devs aren't saying 'no'. Which is better than for the Wii and 3DS. So theres some sort of hope.
