Third game in the series. There are much better alternatives. Why such a big shock?

As of the January NPD in 2009 the PS3 had sold ~6.8m, as of the January NPD 2011 (last month) the PS3 had sold ~11.1m. I might be a few thousand off because of different numbers floating around, but it looks accurate to me.
The one thing going for Bulletstorm was that it was developed in Poland, so costs aren't exactly huge.daebo said:Good.
And I can see why Cliffy a little disappointed with dicktits. Not sure if a game like that has legs and needs to sell a lot initially...
Maybe if it had some FF characters in it!TheFLYINGManga_Ka said:Marvel VS Capcom 3 at #2 is kind of surprising. I knew it'd be top 10 but not that high.
Which means that there will probably be a Super MvC3 or MvC3 EX or something, which is good, since having more characters and stage is always a good thing!
Black Ops is just insane! We need more maps though.
And next month will be Pokemon Obviously. That could be pretty huge!
No Tactics Ogre.
My sarcasm detection is broken. Help me.thuway said:This should tell Sony one thing, start working on next-gen- NOW. This generation they screwed themselves over by launching late with just about everything.

I'm wondering if the new Mortal Kombat will do as good as MVC3.h3ro said:IT'S MAHVEL BABY
Its the second game on PS3. You'd usually hope for a sequel to build on the original's success. Kinda like DS2.Watchtower said:Third game in the series. There are much better alternatives. Why such a big shock?
thuway said:Making a sequel to any game (Uncharted barred) is usually a recipe for disaster. Most of my friends were lost as to why pick up the 3rd Killzone when they haven't played 1 or 2.

Yeah, I double checked my spreadsheet... tis broken.Jtyettis said:It's off I noticed that earlier. It should be closer to 15M as MS was around 10 million difference with 25M plus last month.

Yes, there are a lot of TV commercials on cable.Kafel said:Did BulletStorm get a big marketing campaign ? I only saw some websites with skins during 2 or 3 days.

user_nat said:Reading some comments in this thread you would think the PS3 sold about 200k units.
It actually sold about 450k (using the % increase provided by NPD). That makes its second biggest non holiday month (and is more than a couple of holiday months).

It had a pretty big push on TV. Probably even more than what killzone received. The ads came on tv right behind one another sometimes.Kafel said:Did BulletStorm get a big marketing campaign ? I only saw some websites with skins during 2 or 3 days.

This is just downplaying and damage control bait though really.lawblob said:KZ3 officially lower than KZ2, despite 40%+ higher user base?

How do you figure that?"The best-selling hardware system of the month was the Xbox 360 which had its biggest non-holiday (November/December) sales month ever, surpassing September 2007 when Halo 3 launched.," Frazier says. "The 250 GB system bundled with the Kinect sensor was one of the drivers of the increase in average selling price among console hardware."

Development costs might still be in $10M+ territory. Probably not, but also not impossible (The Witcher 2 is a bit above that).Nirolak said:The one thing going for Bulletstorm was that it was developed in Poland, so costs aren't exactly huge.

And that's the crazy part. The ASP is pretty high; an actual price drop this fall would set MS up for an incredible fall and holiday. Assuming they don't bork the supply again.Megadragon15 said:How do you figure that?
no, but 360 > PS3Canova said:any breakdown number?

outunderthestars said:dumb question: Why do companies release high profile games so late in the NPD reporting cycle? I'd think that they would want a full month of sales so they could issue PR about topping the charts and what not...
Noone's expecting big numbers and the latest MK vs DC universe did over a million in the US (combined) and never made it into the Top 10; nearly 3 years ago. Even less with this one having an M-rating.Averon said:Boon and company should be grateful MK9 does half of MvC3's numbers.
The kid-friendly factor for fighting games these days can't be denied, and that's something MK9 assuredly does not have in its favor.Averon said:Do MK still maintain that level of mainstream appeal vs MvC? I doubt it.
