They haven’t. Jim Ryan said about 160M in an interview. It’s officially 155M.
Unless Sony updates their official information, the PS2 sold to the public 155M not 160M. So the Switch needs 10M to take the crown.
The official information is that PS2 was over 155 million by March 2012, and then shipped several million more over the next 9 months. So 155 million is not enough for Switch to pass PS2.

PS4 wasn’t a console/portable hybrid and Sony hadn’t developed a massive portable following over the course of 4 generations (5 if you count game boy color).

Also, comparing distinct fiscal periods between the hybrid console and individual console and portable devices seems a little apples and oranges unless you are trying to articulate the longevity of the Switch. (Which is undoubtedly impressive — by the way) Still, it’s too often ignored that Nintendo had to cannibalize a portion of its market for the Switch to sell as many total units as it has.
I don't really agree with the term "cannibalize" here. A large portion of the DS market had already been lost to mobile long before Switch.

What the Switch did was combine the 3DS market and the Wii market into a single ecosystem.

We don’t have any other official source, so 155 million is the goal in this case.

We have Sony's own financial statements. The PS2 remained on the market in the fiscal year after 155m was crossed. In the following fiscal year it shipped between 3 and 6 million.

Switch is a huge anomaly. I’d be very surprised if the “Switch 2” reach anywhere close to these heights personally, both in terms of hardware and software.
There will be fans who'll say it's a failure if it won't reach it, even though their own manufacture of choice never reached those heights either.

Of course, that’s how it goes. It’s doomed to ‘fail’ in that case though. I mean, between all the systems released since Ps2, Switch is the only one that (might) beat it.

If the Switch manages to get there, I don’t think we’ll be seeing a record like this get broken again for a long time.

A pic of last produced unit numbered isn't enough?

Also the notion that PS2 took 13 years to reach 150m is not true at all. PS2 gen lasted exactly 6 years then replaced by PS3, now imagine Switch sales if Switch 2 released 2 years ago!

PS2 was such a beast that it outsold ps3 and 360 for their first few years on the market.

All this back and forth over 155 vs 160 will be moot if switch sells more

Question is will it?
I expect it to be close to 155 next year

PS2 figure is 155m until Sony officially publish otherwise.

We’ve seen other big wigs update on numbers which have later been proven to be false or an error (Game Pass numbers being reported 5m higher by Take Two’s Zelnick for example).

Don’t huff copium. Just accept.

They already officially published otherwise. Sony had shipped over 155 million by the end of March 2012.

In them shipped more units the following fiscal year. In that year, they shipped 16.5 milion PS2s and PS3s. The maximum number of PS3s was 13.9 million, so that's at least another 2.6 million PS2s shipped.

Can’t find a source on that.

Maybe because people disagree with that notion?

I don’t think WiiU would have suddenly been booming had they never released the 3DS, just because the GamePad can be used as a portable at home. It’d still be a humongous failure.

The WiiU wasn’t a true hybrid and wasn’t designed to replace both the DS and the Wii. That IS the sole purpose of the Switch, a best of both worlds device that is equal parts play on the go and play on your tv in your living room.

I do agree that the Switch is an anomaly though. You can only consolidate markets when you are addressing multiple distinct markets and I doubt that Nintendo will ever go back to mutually exclusive portable and home console markets. I also wonder if the novelty of the hybrid console will have worn off with the non-Nintendo diehards. Kids seem much more interested in playing video games on their phones/iPads than they were a few years ago.

You are not going to find any official source with that information… If Sony would have sold 160 Million PS2 to costumers, they for sure had made that announcement, also, you can’t lie on a financial report because that’s a crime. More than 155 Million is the official information. So, is between 155 and 156.

On slide 14 of this document, Sony announces that they sold 16.5 million PS2s and PS3s between between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013:

And here is a source for Sony saying that PS3 sales were down YoY during that period: https://www.vg247.com/sony-fy13-ps3-sales-down-vita-flat-gaming-division-profit-down

Therefore, there must have been at least 2.6 million PS2s shipped that fiscal year.

As it says on Sony's site, the over 155 million stat is "as of 31 March 2012". It's not the total figure.

we all know the debate is much spicier if the results are ambigous

With BC confirmed there is little reason not to keep manufacture up for another year or two. 155 or 167M is easily doable.

It’s time.
Switch 2, March 2025, new 3D Mario as launch title.

Here's the final number.

So many Sony fanboys in this thread are ecstatic about the Switch being close to becoming the best selling console of all time lol
I recall lot of bullies who use ps2 as low graphic standard, and often covering behind ps2 legacy as shield whenever switch sales are discussed. Ps2 is the most balsnce behind two terms in most discussion. Being lowest standard as graphic in modern terms, and being the greatest proof of sony has most sales.

Tbh, PS2 graphic is some games, still captivating me, Monster hunters, GT4, Genji, FF12, i think personally, they are still hold up in these days.

Comparing the sales doesn't make sense. PS2 was in a totally different era, we discuss this every three months.
I'm happy the Switch is so successful, but it makes me nervous about their next console... These companies usually become overconfident after a good generation.

When’s Sony’s big December show? They could show off the Switch 2 at the same time and completely over shadow it.

I remember them stating the Switch was a 10 year console. So I wonder, what’s their move when Switch 2 is finally announced. I think it would be for the best to transition how they did with the 3DS. Still release a few more games for it, release a new smaller refresh, price drop, and then finally let it go after a year or 2. Probably cruise to 170 that way.

Probably be easier transition if they go crossgen for a while with some titles. It will be interesting to see how they handle the whole crossgen aspect.

They will definitely need to have true Switch 2 exclusives if they want people to get on board.

Switch 2 should be vastly more powerful and should have games that show it off, not games that are still being designed around and hindered by 2014 technology.

Come on man. 100m game sales is insane.

At full price aswell. Not like a certain companies games that have to hit sub $15 to sell into the tens of millions.

Also good to see the Reddit boycotts worked… lol.

Switch will sell more than 160 million units. Then the excuse will simply change to “it’s a handheld wah wah wah”. Delicious tears.

I pretty sure new games from Monolith Soft will be exclusive to new Nintendo system same way Xenoblade 2 was when released same year as Switch released.
