Sad about SFV, but I'm not too worried. I think this game will have legs. It's the most fun I've had with Street Fighter in years. I think digital sales will be fairly significant (that's how I bought it). And I'm sure they'll have a few sales right around big content releases to lure in folks who need more single player stuff. The foundation is great! They just need to keep adding and drawing more people in.

I was so wrong on primal. I thought it would be treated as a spin-off and be largely ignored. I didn't think SFV would sell very well either, but predicted FC:p would be even lower.

Good job ubi.

Do we even have any instances where complete editions of games sold more than the launch edition?
There's no content in the current game. How the hell Capcom thought they'd get away with this bare bones release is beyond me. People will buy SFV if it's got all the content

?

210 + 129 = 339

339 > 315

Only other factor is digital

We already know that Fates sold close to 400K including digital sales, and SteamSpy sales are worldwide. But even if we count all of them, it didn't come out on top. Of course, this ignores PSN sales, so it's possible it did relatively well there?

If Microsoft are committed to going multi-platform, then they should take what made Windows and Office so successful and fully apply it to Xbox. If people can buy a Sony/Google/Samsung device and have access to Xbox then that could change the entire industry. Development, publishing, consumption, connectivity, promotion -- everything changes.

I don't think this is possible. I also think Sony beats MS to this as they already have PS Now on their TVs as well as some Samsung TVs, blue ray players, etc. imagine if they already start putting out decent PS4 titles. I can't see how they allow competing storefronts on their devices.

I think a lot of this stuff will be clearer after we find out what Nintendo are doing with the NX. I never thought I would say this, but Nintendo might be the deciding factor on whether Xbox survives or dies. I

Completely agree. If NX turns out to be something special - MS may accelerate their hw exit plans.

I guess the lesson is that you have to be careful about how you launch your game. You can't count on "we'll fix it later" as a selling point. Early word of mouth is important. Game sales are front-loaded, but they aren't that front-loaded. The market now has time to react quickly if your game launches busted in some way.

Shitty gameplay? Well, that's your opinion. I will just say that fighting games don't have to be deep to be good.
Balance and true character diversity also helps.
I'm well aware of the merits of the Naruto games, and they deserve the good sales they get (even with so many games in the last years), there is a lot of care put into the story mode cutscenes and story mode in general.
Street Fighter 5 though is one of the best, if not the best, fighter from the gameplay standpoint in the market, and in a genre where the most important thing should be, you know, fighting, it's a shame that it's not being rewarded as such.

Right , because the only thing holding SFV back was brand recognition. NOTHING else nope /s

I mean it should have done over at least 500K in a week, even other bad games like RE6 managed to do at least 2 million I think in a week and that was horrible.

Gat damn, Street Fighter outsold by Naruto and Fire Emblem? What a time to be alive.

So much for that financial target... On the bright side it means the game should drop in price pretty fast. Good for us late adopters, but maybe not for Capcom. Ouch.

Street Fighter V has many parallels to Street Fighter III. It will have a devoted hardcore fanbase, but will never be as popular as its predecessor. It's still a great exclusive grab for Sony and the franchise can "recover" in the future.

It is hard to say if Project X Zone 2 was affected much by releasing during Fire Emblem week. I wouldn't have bothered with that game even without competition, because there are so many games that I would prioritize over it.

SFV steamspy numbers (worldwide) have muddied the NPD sales. Any idea what the US PC sales for SFV are?

If Steamspy's geography numbers are accurate (and there's no way to be sure), Street Fighter 5 sold roughly 56k between the US and Canada on Steam.

They should have released it in June with all the 6 dlc characters included, some new and polished stages and the story mode + trial.
16 characters with no offline mode and just a f2p system for 60$ is too much in 2016, no matter if you are street fighter.

129k from Steamspy also includes activations outside the US and FE is close to 400k with digital in one week in NA only.

So adding the 210k to the 56k from Steamspy NA and a generous(?) 30% from PSN sales (60k) is around 330k.

Which is what I said that they were close but not over as 330k < 400k.

Capcom targeted 2m shipped as of Mar 31st.

Is that possible?

Well shipments are know to be well over sales and right now we can draw SFV sales at over 500k (possible 600-700k).

If it reach 1m sold at end of the month then the shipment will be north of 1.5m for sure and that means 2m shipped is not out of question.

My estimate for SFV shipped this quarter is 1.5-1.7m but I won't be surprise if Capcom reach it targets.

Very surprised by Naruto. Didn't know it was that popular here.

Naruto is second only to Dragonball in the West when it comes to mainstream popularity . The sheer number of usernames online in gaming and other things like social media in reference to Naruto characters or references to things in the Naruto world speaks to its popularity.

I'm not worried about Street Fighter. I'm planning on buying it eventually but have no reason to buy it right now, and I think a lot of people are in the same boat. Its legs will surprise people, especially if they keep pumping out physical discs every year.

Always rough to see mechanically great games underperform. Hopefully the later add ons fill things out and give Street Fighter a boost.

Exactly.

I love the game but I'm worried about the series.

I remember people saying it would be fine and I retorted with the argument you made.

You cannot get bad word of mouth in this connected era.

I just realized that SFV did about as well as Rise of the Tomb Raider's opening month last year. From this perspective, SFV's bombing doesn't seem too bad (comparatively speaking).

I too think it will have legs. Word of mouth about how the game plays is very strong, but lack of content and features literally greyed out is also spread very strongly. So it has a lot of people in your position I think.

Make no mistake though. They messed up and should have waited another month.

Soon to be news: Bomb Fighter V, Capcom halting all DLC development. Next year, SFVI coming out exclusively on Nintendo NX.

Man Capcom really fucking shit the bed in all respects.

TR had the holiday ahead of it though, and with quick discounts.
