NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

Im a noob to sales data analysis. If hardware sales are 3% higher year over year, why are some saying this was a "terrible" month for hardware sales? Maybe it was lackluster, but increasing over last year a little bit doesn't seem terrible, especially considering how many people must be holding out for black friday to buy.

I'm truly surprised that Yoshi is in the top 10. I'm glad because its pretty fucking amazing but still, nonetheless, shocked. Power of Amiibos, huh?

Halo 5 and the X1 both number one.
And here comes the holidays right behind it.
They deserve it really. They've been busting their ass for awhile now.
Promising, Hustling,and Delivering.
Hope this trend for continues for them.
Don't get soft Microsoft, keep that Eye of the Tiger baby.

Am I supposed to read this as a haiku or something?

This Halo talk is tiring because I feel like there's a lot of repeat going on.

Halo 2, 3, 4 and Reach all debuted to ~3.3 million.

1.5 million is a huge drop off for the series. A 305k XB1 month is equally bad but is outdone by how pathetic the PS4 price drop effect was.

1.5 would be a huge drop off but given how much earlier Reach and then Halo 4 launched in the month than 3 and 5 (3 biggest, 5 most recent) you can see it was dropping somewhat anyway.

If Halo 5 had come out earlier in the month, it would have been a bit better (but less subsequently in November, obviously). 5 is a great game for me which I think will help repair the damage of people not sticking around in Halo 4 multiplayer and Halo MCC being broken

People expected more from the PS4 price drop , X1 did good comapre to last year .
I guess members that said $50 after 2 years not going to effect much have to be feeling good right now.
The XB1 didn't exactly do good either, honestly. It's Halo month and many of us expected at least 400K.

You all know that Wooly World was bundled with an Amiibo not available for individual purchase until 11/13, right?

YWW is a strong GOTY contender for me personally, but even I can see that the sales probably had as much to do with the Amiibo. And one of the best Amiibo so far, too.

Eh, maybe people who waited this long to move on to next gen can also wait one more month to see black friday deals ya know? Just my guess.

If halo 5 did 1.5 million physical, and around another 250k form bundle's (digital) and digital sales, that gives us 2 million in november in just the US (roughly). It was also reported Halo 5 did 1m digital, so thats 2.5 million right there. UK physical was 150k, so 2.65m sales. Rest of the world should take up another 300-400k, so thats 3 million sales. Yes, its very ehhh, but it did around the very important 3 million mark for week one WW/

Halo 5 number 1 without bundles and no digital included?

Holy fuck. Wasn't expecting number 1.

You expected Xbox not to win Halo month in the USA in pretty much all categories? Sorry, but coming from someone like you in particular I just can't take that comment at face value.

Not sure this is a fair comparison.

Halo 4 came out in November (which is a much bigger month for HW sales), and Halo 3 came out in September which has five weeks of sales compared to four in October.

Not saying Halo hasn't declined, just that the comparison here does not show a fair picture.

Not only that, but Halo 3 and Halo 4 (IIRC) weren't available day one as a digital download.

PS4 had a price drop so maybe people were expecting a boost from that.

Wasn't PS4 Battlefront bundle ready to preorder in September? And Cod mid october? Both are not included in October sales and I imagine they would affect PS4 sales for october since customers will opt to have those bundles. Right?

Definitely. And they were also already up around the time the price cut was officially confirmed for the US too so a lot of the October orders were probably for these bundles.

Why do people care? It's 5 days on the market and it has arguably the best MP in the series. It will do well for the next 3-4 months until it reaches expectations.

I don't get how people can use the rationale that next month will be better because of firesales and such and then forget about it in other situations.

Look, you said in the other thread that you'd be upset if Halo underperformed, so I get that you've preemptively staked out a position here. But I want to be completely honest: is there a number under which Halo 5 would sell that you would admit was disappointing? I just want to know so I don't waste my whole night arguing with someone who won't yield.

Sales matter. You're in a sales thread so people care. They influence how things get made and if they get made. If you don't think this won't have ramifications for the future, I think you're wrong.

Maybe if they had a cheaper bundle .
The big Halo bundle was $500 .

Eh, maybe people who waited this long to move on to next gen can also wait one more month to see black friday deals ya know? Just my guess.

That is also a factor .
I mean all of Sony big bundles in Nov any way .
Next month sales going to be telling either way .

I am really suprised Rock Band charted. Here in Florida there was only one retailer I saw that was putting it on the shelves (Target), yet there were Guitar Hero bundles everywhere.

fyi if the numbers below are accurate, the 3 million number for Halo was for the US alone.

wikipedia said:
In the U.S., Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies in its first 12 days on sale,[119] increasing to 3.7 million copies by November 15, 2007.[120] Reuters UK estimated that Halo 3 may have sold up to 5.2 million copies worldwide in the first two weeks after launch.[3] By November 30, 2007, Halo 3 had sold 5 million copies worldwide, and as of that point, was the best-selling video game of 2007 in the U.S., even though the game is only available on one console.[121] On January 3, 2008, Microsoft announced that Halo 3 has sold 8.1 million copies.

Were did the one million digital come from?

If it sold anywhere near 3 million first week that would pretty good.

I DO care, you're 100% right. I'm not trying to come off as a "fanboy" or anything, I just would be pretty butthurt if one of the better MP games AND Halo games to come out in a long time bombed because of the stigma surrounding the X1. It deserves much higher than I'd assume it got from all the hints.

I think it's a true return to form for the series in many ways (albeit NOT perfect) and is one of the freshest, smoothest MP games I've EVER played.

I'd be VERY disappointed if it performed ~500k for the 5 days it was on sale. I'm HOPING for close to or AT 1m.

If Halo 5 is 1.5 million that is still pretty good at retail. I'd guess over 2.25 million with digital and bundles factored in. I think the last physical game I bought was Halo 4.

Halo used to move 3.4m copies a day in NPD only.

~1.5m for the whole month is a disaster no matter what.

That is factually incorrect.

Please stop making shit up. Halo has done 3.3m for each of their launch NPD's but that number was not a day1 number.

I feel its a common understanding that Halo 5 is the best playing Halo yet (it is for me), and will be the best multiplayer in the series as soon as the support arrives with more maps. H4 tarnished the brand with its mp but H5 has reclaimed that recognition.

So im happy to see it do 'ok', disappointed its not as good as expected but its not troublesome either, its almost certain that the game will carry strong WOM over the holidays, only then will we be able to conclude if the series has peaked in popularity or if H6 will benefit from H5 reception and the series will have another chance to compete with H3.

Hardware isnt great all round, im getting a little worried about the industry if thats the best we can do during lots of incentives being thrown at consumers.

thats pretty sad even coming from you

How so? He's a fan of the company's output, it didnt come across as distasteful.

Yeah I think ~500k is so hilariously low that the IP would be dead if that happened.

What? It will easily clear 1 million.

There is no need to give that comment a benefit of the doubt. We all know what it's.
