NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti launch/review day - 2017/03/09

Just got my Acer Predator XB271HU IPS model and my msi gtx 970 isn't performing too bad atm. I just hope they hurry up with the faster memory 1080 models. I might pick up a ti depending on the price difference.

Volta cards will probably be the first to get HBM2

Small Volta will likely have GDDR5X (from the faster 1080) and a process improvement. I wouldn't expect HBM2 (or maybe GDDR6) until big Volta, which won't show up until late this year to early next year (Titan). Nvidia putting HBM2 in an 1170 would be pretty surprising (but awesome).

You're a good duder. Thanks.

So after installing the card I'm hit with two problems. Apparently you have to update Windows to install Pascal drivers, and my monitor doesn't have a displayport. The DP to DVI adapter you get only allows 64hz.

What kind of adapter do I need for 4k @ 120Hz?

I realize we don't have benchmarks yet for third party cards, but is the cooling impact so large such that they're running at temps lower than 1080s? Or is the cooling "good," but you should still expect a temp increase commensurate with the TDP increase?
This remains to be seen but I think that temps will be higher on custom 1080Tis although not by much.

Guh, why are all these designs going backwards? The exposed heat pipes were easily the best part about the Maxwell MSI card.
Exposed heatpipes are way worse for cooling than heatpipes going through a radiator.

Looks like it. I wonder when stock will appear.
Says "In stock" for me at the moment.

What's your current resolution?

For 4K@120Hz you'll need a DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 connection. DVI won't work at all: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Resolution_and_refresh_frequency_limits_for_DisplayPort

Well I was able to downsample from 4K @ 120hz with my old card. It's a dual link DVI-D connection I believe.

EDIT. I guess DVI and DVI-D are different things, should have clarified.

Downsample to what? Downsampling is performed on the card so it doesn't matter from what you downsample, only which resolution you output in the end. I think that dual DVI should be able to handle 1080p@120Hz at least?

DVI-D and DVI are the same, it's just that there's DVI-D and DVI-I with the latter transmitting analogue signal as well and thus being compatible with VGA/D-SUB via a simple converter. DVI-D is purely digital.

Oh didn't know that, yeah I'm downsampling with DSR from 4K to 1080P.

So I would need an active DL to DVI-D dual link adapter right? Those are like $120 where I live, goddamnit....

To be clear, this is only the case with DSR, or in-game resolution scaling. If you're not using DSR, rendering at 4K-120hz does require the cable bandwidth as well. It was a constant pain earlier in the screenshotting scene when trying to brute force super sample. Sometimes, getting a new cable would mean you could get some obscene resolutions @ 30hz.

So we thinking the majority of custom cards will go up around 11am US/Eastern time on Tuesday the 28th? The founders cards seemed to go on sale around 11.

Step-up 1080Ti shipped today from EVGA. Expected next Wednesday. Let's go!

EK block and backplate should be here before then but I won't be getting my CPU block until probably week after next, so I'll just use the card stock in my current system until then. I've never run a reference card with stock cooling. Feels dirty.

How much will a used 1080ti FE go for in a few weeks does everyone think? I'll proobably put mine on here for like $650 shipped.

Just realized amazon(.ca) accepts returns for gpus. May have to return the FE if I manage to get some custom card, hoping for SC or FTW.

When I talked to their support about a different computer part I was told all PC components have to be returned in an unopen, still sealed box or they would charge a restocking fee.

The Asus Strix is listed on the Swedish site inet.se (one of the biggest here), says it will start shipping in 5 days. Price is 100€ above FE though.

But it starts to look like we should see cards on the 29th then with the pre-orders for EVGA going up on the 28th.

You could use HDMI instead:

A quick google also gives me this cable so it may be possible without an active adapter: https://www.novatech.co.uk/products...dvi-d-dual-link-cable-1-8m-mm/dp2dvi2mm6.html

Another result: http://www.provantage.com/hp-nr078aa~7HPP950E.htm - price is obviously insane here but at least it should be possible.

Tempting to just order the MSI Armor from Newegg, but I have a ton of store credit for Micro Center, so I must hold out until they get them in.

So I got the EVGA founders edition, downloaded the EVGA OCX app to monitor the card, not really interested in Overclocking, but I noticed it is running very hot at 84 Celsius constantly, but furthermore, it was clocking at 1750mhz constantly, I thought it only went to around 1500mhz? Does this overclock by default? Am I missing something, I prefer it ran at normal clock speeds and cooler, but even if a press default it goes up to the upper 1700mhz. Can anybody clarify this? Thanks!

Man, the NowInStock.net links for the sites go through a shit ton of advertiser sites before just going to the actual store.

uMatrix does not like it one bit.

EDIT: I should state that some of them do, some seem to link direct to the store but others go through hoops to get there.
