NY mayor De Blasio makes racist joke, Hillary responds, someone annoyed

Other than discussing the phrase, what context would be okay for white people to use it?
As the setup for a joke in which you *think* that's the term they're using, but it turns out it's not.

And in the context in which I've heard it - in safe, diverse communities where it's an inside joke amongst the community.

Seemed like a totally staged bit to set up the cautious politician line, but I can't imagine how anyone though that was a good idea.

As weird as it is that so many folks here have never heard it, even weirder is the number of black posters who don't seem aware that CPT is used by whites to reference late black employees, and they don't mean it as a compliment.

Right, I'm kind of surprised more people don't know about it/how it could have racial connotations.

"Cautious Politician Time" doesn't even make sense as a rehearsed line. A cautious person wouldn't be late, they would be on time because they were cautious enough to budget in unexpected delays. Even ignoring the potential insult here, the joke just doesn't make sense. Boooo!

Yes it does. She saying he's a cautious politician...as in that's the reason he waited so long to endorse her.

she's just not a natural politician guys give her a break

/sarcasm, terrible joke from another terrible campaign she's running

If something like this is enough to offend you, you need to get a life
Lol I got one buddy and this isn't even about me; it's about Hillary Clinton and professionalism. This stuff makes her campaign look unprofessional regardless how it makes other people feel.

You really think this joke is bad enough to warrant a rejection of an endorsement?

I mean, it was a lame joke, but it wasn't racist. It was a lame comedy bit that would have landed if either Hillary or DeBlasio had any comedic timing.
Get Dave for it...

...wait nevermind, he's got some shit to sort out himself atm....

But the bottom line is... can NYers use this to get rid of de Blasio?

No one in the NY press gives a shit. It was a skit designed to make him look dumb at a dinner designed to roast the mayor. No one outside the internet gives a shit so far.

Yeah that was really dumb of De Blasio to say and honestly, I can't count the times I've seen a white person make a racist joke but they think it's ok because "they're one of the good ones" or they are talking to friends who are minorities or it's an "in-joke" thing. Maybe that is true for De Blasio but context is important.

I feel like every culture has a cpt variant. Shit, fgc has tst (tourney standard time) to mock everything running behind.

Wish it wasn't scripted so I can pretend it was a shot at her black vote support lol.

Nah. Her using it a setup for a joke is fucked up and she shouldn't have.
It would be like her saying "I'm NR." with a wink and a nudge to make people think she's saying nigger-rich and then when people react negatively she says "I mean I am never wrong."

Hmm I've never heard this CP thing until today. I'm with the above poster with having heard Mexican time. Can it really be an honest mistake or do we assume it was a deliberate racist comment?

watched the video and it's even worse than i thought... it wasn't some slip up, they actually scripted and planned this out thinking it was a good idea!

Yeah, I didn't think it would be so obvious. I figured it was gonna be hard to tell, but this was all planned out and approved ahead of time.

get some go again
I've only ever heard Mexican time. I think everyone else stole it from South and Central American culture.
it's probably one of those jokes that's been around for a long ass time that nobody can even claim at this point. never heard it used negatively before though.

exactly they are showing only a bit and seems scripted, they should the rest to get the context of what was happening.

I've never heard of "CP time" before. Make no mistake, I've heard my fair share of assholes use "black time," "Mexican time" and "Chinese time," but never CP time. Is it supposed to be a more inclusive form of racist joke?

yes but it's either used as a self-deprecating thing where you make fun of yourself or by racist white people to put down people of color.

I realize the entire point of the joke was, "That's not the CP time we were talking about! He's just being cautious!" but it's tasteless and super weird timing after Bill/BLM clash this past weekend.

Human Time

i think this sounds weirder because "CP" also means something illegal.

Being late is so universal that it makes sense for every culture to have their own self-deprecating spin, and there are also people who use those spins as slurs.

Racism is like an endless buffet, so many flavors and portions to choose from

Still, this was just a joke that bombed mostly because of the performers, delivery, and audience

Neither have I. I have a few Mexican and South American coworkers, and they all say it whenever we are having a get together outside of work, because they are going to be a couple hours late.

Probably not the best idea to toss that joke out though.

It makes sense to me. He was cautious of whether or not to endorse Hillary, I assume in light of the email scandal.

Cautious about who to endorse. It was probably rehearsed.

To endorse her. That's the caution

He's cautious in terms of endorsements, because a cautious person would have been waiting until her nomination was a mathematical certainty.

Yes it does. She saying he's a cautious politician...as in that's the reason he waited so long to endorse her.

Ahhhhh. See, I hadn't watched the video so I didn't get the context and now I look stupid. I thought he was late for the event and was using this as an excuse for showing up late. Definitely makes more sense now that I've had it explained. Sorry!

Never wrong is NW. :p

I can understand your reaction if you equate colored people time to something like nigger-rich. Can you see it from the other perspective, though (that when you're among friends or likeminded people, that the term is not necessarily derogatory)? My sense is that they (mistakenly or not) thought they were among likeminded people that would not take it in a racist manner. Is that a plausible or at least potential understanding?

Oh, and to be clear, it wasn't a case of "this is what she came up with when people reacted negatively" -- this was part of the scripted joke from the outset.

Speaking for myself, it's always been used in my family in differing variations. I suppose I never really thought about how it came about.

Right.

I don't think the issue is that the racial connotations aren't known. I mean, "colored people time", it's right there. I just think it's surprising to some people that the joke still has an offensive tinge, although I suppose that makes sense.

I mean, this joke is old as fuck. My grandparents make CPT jokes. I always looked at it as an old bit of racial self-humor that a lot of communities have. But still, if your're not a member of that community, you should avoid it.

Like, recently a Jamaican friend of mine on Facebook posted an Instagram video meme about how Jamaican food restaurants never actually have food. It was funny, I laughed. But it was a joke I wouldn't make myself, obviously, because I'm not Jamaican.

I have never heard a white person use that term before, it's usually only said jokingly by other black people. DeBlasio probably got it from his wife.

Yooooo, he's right.

I think that a more cautious person would have probably avoided making the joke. Even if we operate on the idea that the joke isn't really that offensive and that people are overreacting, de Blasio (and Hillary if she knew about it) should prioritize good PR over taking a chance that a joke from a white guy about black culture would go over well.

It was a terrible idea, but in a way I can appreciate the no-win situation that politicians are in with this kind of stuff. If they keep it safe, we all bemoan how bland and boring they are and why can't they be more real. But if they go out on a limb even a little bit trying to be funny or edgy, we jump down their throat about that too.

Couldn't care less about Hillary or De Blasio but, this was a staged event. Why are people upset over this? Sensitive much?

Yooooo, he's right.
Shit would drive me nuts when i I lived in D.C. lol..

You only say that shit when you at home or with family

He would have known this if he attended the meetings

Did anyone actually see the video? They were doing a skit with one of the African American stars of Hamilton, the C.P. time joke was obviously scripted and even Hillary responds as part of the joke.

De Blasio is married to a black woman and has black children, you think he would say such a stupid joke like than for real?
