The consumer model next year should be a decent step up, as it'll most likely use a 1080p screen among other improvements. That said, it's not going to be perfect, and whenever you do buy there's always going to be an improved model around the corner (such is the way with all technology, really). It's also a matter of whether you're only interested in playing games with full, proper support for the Rift, or if you're willing to tinker, as official support will be a lot better by the time the consumer version rolls around.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or does downsampling actually improve a lot the IQ on the rift?

Just watching these videos makes it clear to me that Nintendo should whip open their fat cheque book and buy these guys and patents for a billion dollars. Reactions like this are the closest to the Wiimote reveal trailer where people play together. Nintendo needs a big time bail out idea for their next console and this is a great one.

Then I thought, what if they could use the same streaming tech they already use for the GamePad?
I sure hope no mega corporation like that buys out oculus. If they're going to be leading the charge into VR they need to stay independent, have an obligation only to make VR better rather than an obligation to increase profits for a certain group, or locking their products/support to any one ecosystem, or focusing on any one small aspect of it

It does, yes. Downsampling is built into the Unity demo, IIRC.
Nvdia or AMD need to do a Star Citizen + Oculus rift + 99XX/870-80 Bundle at the end of 2014.
Thats really sth. i dont understand at all, absolute nothing from nvidia or AMD about oculus rift. Absolute NOTHING on the planet ,beside they get ultra cheap, would increase they High end pc GPU Sales more than successful VR.
Just Oculus Rift + Star Citizen Bundle would be nice too. Like the Gamekeys you get for buying a good GPU. Maybe even a special edition OR with space design xD

Having spent my first 24 hours with the kit I am really taken away with it.
I am now rooted in the realities of the device with it's cons and pros and I do believe that the upgrade to 1920x1080 with reduced motion blur will provide a good baseline for mass market. It's breathtaking at its current 1280x800.
My housemate (girl 26, real-estate agent, non-gamer though played Wow some years ago) was blown away and stating over and over how incredible it was.

It's a good time for it. Shipping speeds have really been picking up in the last few weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if you have yours in July.
I haven't gotten any shipping updates, but I'm also not signed up for MyUPS. With all of the updates I've seen people posting, I hope to see my Rift by the end of the week. Maybe even later today(Wednesday).

Man, I really really hope IR tracking would be supported with this. It's the only feature that's holding me back from this purchase.

Positional tracking using the hydra is one of the first things getting added to demos, so it is becoming an almost defacto mod for the devkit rift.

The official site was where I got mine, and I think it came pretty quickly even though it said it was on backorder. There was a (50%?) discount a while back associated with Oculus, though I don't know if it's still available.I am here in US
