I couldn't resist. The price just seems too good so I bought one. Hope my 3570k and 1060 aren't too underpowered.

I ordered a sensor from Amazon, that's all I need for room scale right?

Hope I don't regret this decision, didn't really investigate as much as I should have...

You need an extra sensor for room scale, so bundle + the extra one you bought should be fine.

The recommended requirement for the GPU is the GTX 1060.
Your CPU should be fine as well.

Recommended Spec

Graphics Card
NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD Radeon RX 480 or greater
CPU
Intel i5-4590 / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater

Minimum Spec

CPU
Intel i3-6100 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200, FX4350 or greater

Thanks. Yeah, I know my specs meet recommended, but is it like other games were recommended can often get you a mediocre experience but you need higher specs to get a good experience?

You won't be able to supersample much, but most vr games seem to be developed with minimum hardware specs in mind.

Also, if you're going roomscale, you may want to be looking for extension cables for your headset, it's really not long enough.

Getting the perfect setup takes a few modifications, but I find it kinda fun.

Rift setup isn't working.

When it tells me to go inside my headset there's nothing on in the headset and it's an orange light, not green like I think it should be.

Googling this suggests the problem is normally hdmi adapters but i'm not using an hdmi adapter, just hdmi directly into my 1060.

I am using displayport to hdmi in a seperate port to connect to my projector.

Only problem in setup was when detecting usb it always said usb 2.0 even though headset and one sensor are plugged into usb 3.0 ports. But they got green checks so figured it was ok. It seems windows knows they are usb 3.0 ports and the mobo website doesn't have drivers for the usb 3.0.

Grr! Updating gpu drivers now but doubt that's the problem.

Light is orange in standby and white in powered mode. When it's telling you to finish setup in the Rift then it should be a white light. I would try reseating the actual connector on the headset and also the HDMI end on your GPU. Also try leaving it plugged in with the orange light on for a bit then restarting.

If you have back USB 3.0 ports try those instead.

thanks! some combination of resetting, pulling cords out and plugging back in, and updating drivers fixed it.

I'm trying to find it in the thread, but I want to mount my 3 sensors, what did someone say/use? I remember it being a 3M tape of some sorts...

It was 3M Command Strips. I decided to give it a try as well and using 3 small strips on each of the 3 sensors. It's been up for the last week and hasn't moved. I only used them as I didn't want to drill into the walls as I plan on moving my office at some point, but it seems to have worked out well.

Having a lot of fun so far and really just played a few levels of Lucky's tale, Google Earth, and the first five minutes of robo recall.

3 questions:

Is there any trick to getting the rift to work with steam vr? Steam detected I had a headset and promptede to download steamvr. But then when I try to start the setup it keeps saying no headset detected. This is both with and without the Oculus software running.

Also, everything looks pretty good but text is often just a little blurry, especially if I'm not looking directly at it. Is this normal or is it a sign my headset isn't fitting right?

Also, I keep hearing like crackling in my headphones (using the ones built into headset). Is this normal? I just have it hooked up via HDMI directly to my GPU.

PS: this is kind of making me want to get a psvr for exclusives...but first I'll play a few months with the rift!

Try restarting steam or rebooting your machine.

You might try some adjustment. People sometimes don't realize that the headset itself can tilt up and down a little bit.

Is your headset USB connection being recognized as USB3.0 or 2.0? You might want to send a support ticket to oculus now about this issue while you continue to troubleshoot: https://tickets.oculus.com/

Just be aware that the PSVR will be a step down in some areas. The 1:1 tracking you're seeing now with the rift is not as robust on psvr especially with it's move controllers.

Thanks! Good idea. It is being recognized as USB2.0 even though it's USB3.0. Reading around it does sound like it's a usb issue. I'll try messing around with it but will put in the support ticket too.

It's not awful but slightly annoying.

Ok, now I'm going to go completely rearrange my basement to give myself an ~6 x 8 ft space. Finally got Steam to start setting up my headset but it says Id on't have enough room for room scale.

Also, playing roborecall first level. Amazing! But also starting fogging up my vizor, :(.

My Oculus arrived yesterday after a month. Very impressed by it and it came with the Xbox one controller and the remote which I was not expecting. Now Installing as many games as I can.

I love my Rift, but Google Earth didn't really impress me. I don't know what I'm missing. I keep hearing it's so good.

The experience of being in places you can only imagine but can't visit doesn't impress you? Even just visiting old neighborhoods, old homes, old vacations is enough to illicit a great response from most people. Have you also tried putting the settings to "human scale" and then sit on top of a building and just look down on a city. (Google earth adjusts the ipd according to how far in you zoom so to properly be in human scale you'll need to be planted on the ground/building/mountain)

I finally got a good set up going on. Such a huge difference when you have the sensors in the right place, with the right amount of space. RoboRecall was awesome in my new set up. Rez VR Area X is fucking amazing. So glad I got this at 400 bucks.

I seem to have the problem where my left screen is lightly grey/lit when put against black while my right screen is true black. Mostly shows up in sceen transitions when theres nothing else to focus on. Not really sure it's something I what to hassle support with and have to wait weeks for a replacement. From what I've read the issue seen quite common. Just hope it doesn't damage the rift or my eyes for the matter.

It’s been a while since I’ve done any pc gaming. I kind of steered away from it because I kept burning out my video graphics cards.

I just got my 1060 in for my Rift. Ideally what temperature is acceptable when gaming? If I did a benchmark stress test how hot should it be in my enclosure?

The current cards are designed to throttle if they are running too hot, at least on the Nvidia side. A lot will depend on which card you got. The reference cards will run warmer by design.

I've gamed since before hardware acceleration was a thing and I've yet to burn out a card. If you when thru several cards then it might be something aside from temp, such as a bad power supply.

I gotta retry it, because I was in areas that were just like graphics of cities or areas. I don't think I explored it properly.

It didn't affect me quite as strongly as most, but it was pretty cool going back to my highschool or first job or the baseball field we used to hang out at, etc. Places I haven't seen in more than 10 years. And yeah, it's all about going street level and "walking" around mixed in with zooming out.

Actually now I want to go back even further and find my elementary school.

Edit: also about mounting. I got the 3m command strips yesterday and they don't stick at all to the bottom of the sensors because they are rubber. So I ended up ordering some security camera mounts and will try those tonight. Fortunately I'm in my own house and I've already drilled holes in ceiling for projector so figure a few more can't hurt!

Are they actual real life images or graphical recreations?

I use a 3M adhesive camera mount for the sensor on the rafter above my desk and a pipe clamp mounted on a floor-to-ceiling tension rod for the one opposite.

I'm probably going to grab another adhesive mount when I get my third sensor because my space has an awkward slanted ceiling, but if you have the space for it I strongly recommend the tension rod setup. Way easier to modify or move if necessary.

They are real life images, but like satellite pictures, so when you get down to street level it's a little distorted but you can still make things out pretty clearly.

I didn't try toggling human scale like others suggested when I tried it, will do that tonight, not sure what it does.

Is that every place or are not all areas able to be traversed via satellite photos?

I'll definitely recheck it out soon tho, I wasn't to sure how to utilize it properly when I was trying it.

I meant to say in my post that I bought camera mounts. Yeah, I don't really see how you could mount the sensors without mounts.

Technically, google earth uses multiple methods to recreate the earth. Satellites handle pretty much the whole world in 2d however they don't handle any of the 3d areas. For areas of high interest like cities, national parks, monuments...etc google has planes that sweep the area multiple times to collect images and data and then recreate it using computer vision and photogrammetry.

I don't know how often this data is updated but for instance if I go to chicago in google earth I notice Maggie Daley Park is under construction. Construction was completed in 2014 so that data is at least 3+ years old. It varies from place to place.

Everywhere I looked across multiple countries you could go to street level and see buildings, can often read signs, etc. Not sure it's everywhere, although now I want to try like antartica to see if it works.

So my friend ordered 2 units from Amazon and had them delivered to my place. First one I got several weeks ago and looked close to brand new (I say close because it was in a plastic enclosure that was sloppily taped together). The second one I received a few days ago together with the Touch and man did both of them look bad. It was just the Oculus box itself inside a large Amazon box (unlike the first one which had it's own packaging) and both the Oculus and Touch boxes had some damage and a ton of smudges. The items themselves had this weird white dust to them and weren't secured properly.

What's interesting is Amazon said not to worry about sending it back and that they would just send a replacement. They also added another Oculus Touch for some reason (accident?) so it looks like they're sending an Oculus + Touch bundle, and extra Touch.

I vaguely recall mine being somewhat sloppy with tape but it seemed pretty clearly new. I would not be cool with them sending some used-ass or refurbed VR headset as new. What is this, Gamestop?

Where is best place to put third sensor? Intuitively I assumed on opposite side of space but half way in between two sensors.

But if I'm reading the setup guide correctly, they say you should put it in line with one of the front sensors, why is that better?

Behind you. Centered.

It should be in the back left or right corner facing the center. It shouldn't be place in the middle behind you. If you think about the FOV (100 degrees horizontal) of the camera having it in the center behind will give you 2 corner blind spots.

So my lanyard system is working great so far. But my cables are sliding in and out of the carabiners (Except the front one, which has two nodes on either side to keep it at fixed length). I think my best bet will be to get a pulley like this to replace the middle carabiner, so I can get some extra slack as needed with the lanyard closest to the wall pulling the excess slack back into place when I don't need it anymore. I have to say, I wish my ceiling were a bit higher down here, but this kit is really great and barely pulls at all, very little tension and the closest thing I can get to wireless currently I think. Still, need to print some clips for the wall to hold the wires running up to the lanyards though.

Also, anyone have any ideas for what to cover my TV with during play, just for a little extra protection in case I accidentally slap it? Currently I just have the protective wrapping that came with the tv I cover it with.

An old duvet or some layers of bubblewrap?

That won't really protect it from a good smack though playing Echo Arena or something though would it? I'm practically temped to get a big piece of cardboard to put in front of my entertainment center during sessions lol.

Finally pushed my motherboards USB ports over the edge last night and am experiencing some weirdness/connection issues.

Its my new Thrustmaster T300 and shifter that did it. So I've got those two which take up two USB ports, the rift itself, 3 x sensors and an wireless dongle for my Keyboard/touchpad.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97N Gaming 5 with 4 x USB 2.0 and 6 x USB 3.0 ports (2 of these are router via a header to the front).

Moved my rear sensor to one of the 2.0 ports and it helped a bit, although one of my other sensors is being reported as 2.0 even though its on a 3.0 port. Tried also moving the headset to the 2.0 port but got a windows disconnect/reconnect sound each time I started and quit a game, was strange.

Anything I can do to get more bandwidth or ease the load? Motherboard does not allow for another USB controller to be connected via PCI-E.

It might be a power issue as well. I stuck all my peripherals (mouse, keyboard, hotas, wheel) on a single powered usb 2.0 hub. So my rift+sensors use all the usb ports except that one usb hub.

Ah good thinking, that could also be it as I imagine all that lot would be drawing quite a bit of power.

I'll see how it is during further testing tonight and go with a powered hub if need be, thanks!

I don't think I can go back to nonVR driving after trying out Project Cars for the first time. I've always really liked driving games, but always felt too disconnected from them on a monitor... but the feeling of speed in VR is just incredible.

The best is the areas they've done the Apple-Maps-type 3d mapping with. Especially nature and you can find a decent POV where you don't really see the issues that mapping has. Yosemite NP is really great for this, as well as Arches NP. Also going to a big city like Manhattan and just being able to look down into all the buildings. Really wonderful feeling.

I know its not an option for everyone, but I've been playing with this prescription lens adapter for 3-4 days now and its absolutely rock solid.
No shifting around, no perceivable difference inside VR from the lens. I can see 100% clearly now without tons of pressure on my face from my glasses.

If anyone is considering it, its definitely worth it.
Easy to install and remove as well for other users.
