It was a bit SJW, but old gaf for the most part outside of extreme cases didn't hand out bans nearly as flippantly as Era. Especially on gaming side, like yeah if you said some stupid shit in OT you would probably catch a ban. Five years ago though you wouldn't catch a ban for saying a butt slap in a JRPG is okay though. Maybe if your bitching about Bayonetta 2 being a Wii U exclusive.

However many users on Era just use the community |OT| sections for whatever hobby, gaming series their into and pretty much stick with that exclusively. They won't really venture into threads that can be controversial in gaming or OT.
 
Wow, just got a temp ban here from the Kavanaugh thread because I wasn't debating in a "calm, rational" manner. Can anyone pinpoint where that was please, as it's unclear to me? Was it because I complained about a user calling me a "snarky asshole" and another saying I was "operating at a basic, lower level of thought and a complete lack of common sense"? Should I embrace the ad hominems?

Let me tell you how different this site is from Reset and the bans they gave and the political dogpiling that occurs.

Are you saying I wasn't calm? I insult no users (yet received plenty of personal insults about my intelligence/rationality) and in fact I thanked all you conservatives who were debating with me and not attacking me personally. So was it tone policing, that thing Ree loves? Whether or not I was being "rational" is basically a claim of their being only one "rational" side to the Kavanaugh argument (yours/Repubs), and I didn't know mods were here to dictate that to us liberal peons. Enjoy the echo chamber in that thread now, or at least the now one man army of Nobody_Important Nobody_Important

On the most recent page of the thread (51) I've counted up 27 pro-Kavanaugh posts, 4 anti-Kavanaugh posts (all by a single user), and 6 neutral posts. The thread has had this dynamic for the entirety of its existence, and it is just as suffocating as it was when I attempted to argue something like how Sam Harris wasn't a bigot on reset.

Okay, but c'mon, you consider that an echo chamber? A preponderance of one opinion isn't an echo chamber.

An echo chamber is a lack of disagreement and critical thought. I see plenty of disagreement in that thread, including clashes between yourself and myself.

No reason to conflate "I encountered someone stubborn online" with "I encountered an echochamber forum online".

On point you think? I mean, I'd say the guy isn't wrong, for the most part. What did you have a problem with? Era absolutely does lump all white people together and often does downplay the bigotry faced by Poles and other Eastern Europeans, for starters, and the anti Asian things kind of dovetail logically with the VC4 thread and other related shit shows over there.

A combination of extremely one-sided opinion and moderation acting in a way that enforces this one-sidedness additionally is what I would call an echo chamber. If it is correct that Arkage Arkage was banned from the topic without any crass remarks from his side, I feel his valuation is OK.

Yet there are more than a handful that are of similar opinion as him, that were not action'ed, like Nobody_Important Nobody_Important I believe. So if it were an echo, then they would have caught it as well, no?

It was only 1 person out of the bunch (as far as we know), and who is to say anyone from the other side did not catch one as well, just were not vocal about it?
