I was thinking about doing this as I hear Vista runs like butter with it, but from your experience so far, is it worth the money? Do you notice a difference with all that RAM?

4 gigs is probably the sweet spot (vista runs amazingly well but my raid setup is probably a factor too) but you know, ddr2 is dirty cheap at the moment and more ram is never a bad thing.

How recent was this change? I just got home and opened up the case and yeah, the GPU is real hot, of course, I have no idea how hot is normal.

Right now, running only thunderbird and firefox at the standard 2.4, the core temps are 45/45/45/39

Seems hot, no?

Definitely on the warm/hot side but not disastrous. People who live in warm areas can get those speeds on idle. Could also be your case circulation...a bunch of things.

Open your Nvidia controls and check the fan speed. Make sure that the speed isn't at 29%.

I try to use them but everything still looks messy. It just takes organizational skills that I don't have. :lol

It seems like it has a 2.8 GHZ Pentium 4 processor. Other than that, I guess it's 333 MHZ DDR with 256 MB of RAM.

I was wondering what I could buy to improve this computer's game playing performance. It just has a standard, integrated graphics card right now.

I've decided to go with the Antec Nine Hundred case instead of the Lian Li one. The Lian Li one is nicer looking, but I am going to have my case under my desk, so the Antec seems a better bet for me. Plus I like having the power button on the top of the case.

I think my build is finally set in stone. Is it always like this on a first build? I've been changing my mind about things for over a week. The price has gone up $150.00, too. :lol

$1,175.47 total including shipping (and before $45.00 from two rebates). Now to get over being nervous about building my own and then I'm set.

Um, Nvidia controls? Where would I find those?

EDIT: Nevermind, found it. The fan setting was at 29% on the GPU, what's a good spot to set it at?

60% is a good speed for me.

However, keep in mind that the fan speed may very well reset itself to 29% (I'm not sure if Nvidia fixed this issue yet). You'll need to get a copy of Rivatuner and lock the fan speed at your desired speed.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.08-download-163.html

Also, if you lock in your fan settings using rivatuner, be aware that running your nvidia controls might set the fan back to 29%. To avoid this, use Rivetuner to adjust your GPU settings going forward.

Thanks for you help. I have had it at 50% for a bit now and the temp dropped to 43/43/43/38 so that clearly was part of the reason I was running so hot before.

Is saving 14 bucks on the Q6600 by going with the OEM a smart idea since I am installing the tuniq tower?
Yes. OEM version doesn't come with heatsink or the paste. Use the savings to get some AC7 or the like.

Okay. I believe this is the final build I will order tomorrow afternoon. Any comments/changes I should make? I don't need to go SLI since I am only running 1280x1024 or hooking it to my 32" sharp lcd.

I chose that case due to it going underneath my desk, plus I like the airflow and button placement (even though I hear it's annoying installing everything in this case)

I chose an aftermarket heatsink due to wanting to OC the q6600 to 3.0ghz after I know everything is running stable.

The total is $1,171.47 before $45.00 in rebates. This is going from a 1.6ghz P4/radeon 9600.

Just built mine. Dual boots to both OS-X and XP. :D I'm happy. I'll run 3dmark later.

Q6600 is $189.99 at Fry's -- LINK

I would jump on this fast before it either goes out of stock or the deal ends.

You can get the 750W Corsair, not sure if it is modular or even built by Seasonic but i would suppose it is. Might wanna check that out but you can get it for $99 after rebate (original price is $149.99) -- LINK

Depends on your budget.

Does the budget really matter? I mean... basically, I'm wondering if the computer is at all salvageable, or if none of the components would be useful for running fairly recent video games. But yes, if I do buy new parts for it, it'll need to stay at a low price.

That Corsair at micro center isn't modular, but it does seem nice for the price. I'll decide on that tomorrow.

The TX's aren't built by Seasonic or modular, so his PSU is fine. Just wondering Hyde, why did you decide to go with the 900? Its a decent case when they went onsale for ~$60, but they really aren't worth it at all at $100+. Cable management is near impossible and it collects dust like crazy since the front of the case is all mesh.

Ah fuck it. I want a new motherboard and CPU too.

I've got the video card and memory picked out and will run me $243 before rebates. Any good combo of sweet motherboard and CPU that will keep me from going over $500?

Well, I haven't decided between the two yet. I like the case you used, but reviews say the top of the case attracts a lot of heat from the GTS G92. Some guy said he drilled a hole in the top to use as a blowhole, so I am nervous about heat in the case.

I doubt you'll have any problems with the 8800GTS in there since it exhaust the heat right out the case. The temps on my 8800GT is pretty decent (for silent cooling), it idles around 42c and goes to 60 under load.

Crap, I cant use my rig @ home until I borrow a USB mouse from my job. Also, I just ordered 4 more gigs of ram 8Gigs FTW :D. I care very little about videogames, but VS2008 + Zune player + hundreds of web pages opened at the same time is a wet dream of mine.

Also from my little experience today in the morning with Vista 64 running on only 2Gigs... "beautiful". Also, whats a good 3DMark 06 score? What kind of score could play Crysis with a very nice visual fidelity? As I previously mentioned, I scored 13200 with an old driver, and only 2 Gigs of ram, I am looking to maybe OC my CPU a little and maybe also do it with my videocard. If I am sure that I can play Crysis on very good settings, I'll buy it. I do not trust the demo as an indicator of performance though since the code wasnt optimized yet.

Just wanted to check. The first batch of 8800gt's had a bum fan AND drivers, which not only didn't move a lot of air, it was perpetually locked at 29% speed by Nvidia's own drivers.

Wait, so does updating the drivers fix this, or is it actually a problem with the card's firmware? Because I notice in nTune that my card fan is running at 29%...

EDIT: I see there's a 169.32 driver version out for 8800GT cards now, anyone know what's new in that?

Alright, thanks. I'd rather have that case over the other anyhow. I'm sure I'll manage if any heat problems arise on the vid card. Either a PC fan or that hole in the top trick.

Play with the speeds, increase it incrementally. Right around 60-80% you'll notice the fan noise begin to blare, right underneath that threshold is where you want to lock your fan speed. :lol

64 bit ultimate vista or premium? I don't really need the features of ultimate, but allowing unsigned drivers would be nice... I doubt I can configure my virtua fighter v xbox 360 stick properly without that feature.

Pretty sure it's a firmware thing. If you have an evga they actually have firmware updates for the 8800GT that are supposed to change fan behavior.

Well, the DS3L only has 1 IDE channel, so the most you can have is 2 IDE devices. You should pick up a Sata DVD drive for cheap.

Correct. On my new rig I do not use IDE at all. It's a nice backwards feature to include but if you can, go all SATA! :D

Yeah, I had it set to 60% with no noticeable increase in noise. I just cranked it up to 100% to see the difference. Yeah, it gets a bit louder. I'm a bit disappointed that I can't get the temps below 43C with the stock stuff.

Do and of you tweak the clock settings on your video card?

Also, I have the day off today and was contemplating getting a new CPU cooler, but I am still having trouble finding one that I can mount without taking off the mobo. Anyone have any suggestions, or should I save it for a day when I can fully invest the time to pull out the motherboard?

eznark--- After seeing Intel's stock cooler for the Q6600 in person last night.... I'd say you need to get an aftermarket cooler on your chip ASAP if you're running those clock speeds and those temps.

Like I said above, my load temps (when playing CoD4 and TF2) are 36-39C tops.

sigh I still can not decide if I should build a new Machine right now that will just sit there. There is no real game that is coming out that I am looking forward to on the Comp at the moment. Starcraft 2 and Warhammer are the only two that raises an eye brow, even then I have a machine that is currently pretty "well off". But alas we always want the latest and greatest eh?

...I wonder how that 8 core from AMD will be :)

My cooler, which I pimp out shamelessly, does not need a mobo removal for install. It has the same push-pin system as the stock Intel cooler.

Funny you mention the mobo removal.

So last night when I FINALLY got the underneath part of the Zalman installed, I noticed I couldn't pull up on the CPU latch. :lol

I seriously about shit a brick. Thankfully since the board was already mounted, the under part stayed in place and I was able to just unscrew the top and pull the latch up. :lol
