Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

We already got the only good Mario RPG game that'd ever be downloadable on Virtual Console, Paper Mario, so I can't care about this EU release.

There are other games Europe has that are worth fist shaking about!

Except *this* one is the US version. So not only do we have it, it's not in a shitty form that's not worth playing.

Ys is dated for Monday again on vc-pce.com. I hope it actually comes this time.
If both it and SMRPG hit at the same time, nobody would buy Ys. :\

I'd buy both! But Ys on monday would make SMRPG's absence forgivable.

Agreed. They can keep this one - give us Earthbound.

I am shocked at how under-appreciated Super Mario RPG is.

I honestly don't see how anyone, except those who hate RPGs from the 16-bit era, could prefer the original Paper Mario to this one. To me it's like saying that Hotel Mario is better than SMB3.

This is friggin' bizarro world.

Time for the Wii-kly update! 2 classic games for the VC this week!

SUPER PITFALL: Remember SUPER PITFALL? No? Well too bad!

DONKEY KONG JR MATH: This game was technically already up, but we just wanted to remind everyone it's available!

Sorry, I did actually like RPGs when I was younger and wasting summers on my SNES, but I didn't think there was anything remarkable about the game at all (other than the novelty of Mario actually being in an RPG). It struck me as a very bland game, even back then.

The ESRB is listing a game called "Star Parodius" for Wii. This is not to be confused with "Star Parodier" which was already rated. Also note that it's a Hudson game not a Konami one. Any guesses as to what it might be (Wiiware)?

It's probably either WiiWare or perhaps the PC Engine port of Parodius? (which is better than the NES port but worse than the SNES port). It does seem weird that Konami wouldn't be publishing it though, but I think all of the TG16 ESRB ratings have had Hudson listed as the publisher, even if they're actually from other companies.

The topic title for this thread these past few months made me dread peaking in. I love RPGs. Have there been any good ones I should turn my Wii on for to pick up? Help is appreciated. :D

Fuck yes MARIO RPG!
I had 900 points left and... the game is 900 :D

The game looks all pixel-ish on my TV, but that adds to the "old times" feeling :lol
One thing i don't get are the black bars: when Mario is walking the game has 4 black bars, but on other screens like the battles, it only has two bars [left and right].
Playing in 16.9.

Anyone has an explanation for this?

Is this some kind of joke? Don't let half-fed nostalgia blind you of the differences between legitimate quality RPG experiences like Paper Mario and the Square tainted rubber world of Super Mario RPG.

Paper Mario understands what it is working with, and integrates everything in a supremely expert way which melds traditional Mario and RPGs in a PERFECT manner. Square clearly didn't get it - the awkward isometric overhead view of Super Mario RPG made jumping a chore rather than a joy, and in Paper Mario this is integrated in a way that makes sense and works. In addition, the paper mechanic allowed for the creating of brilliant puzzles that the original Mario RPG game couldn't even fucking shake its dick at. There's no competition there either.

Its writing and humour is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE superior to Super Mario RPG. We're talking goddamn light years difference between the quality of these games. Translation is one of the best of any game period.

Its battle system is also heavily refined, including significantly greater depth and flexibility as well as improved speed.

I know why I hate Super Mario RPG, and can articulate it in depth. So I hope you likewise can explain why you think Super Mario RPG is better without some lame out.

What time does stuff usually go up on Mondays? I have things to do, and I know they're not getting done once Ys hits :lol

Mario RPG is the best Mario RPG. Beats the pants off of the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games. Give this to me soon NOA.

*High Fives*

Although I think the Mario & Luigi games are good, I have to agree with you. I can't stand Papercut Mario. Yuck. Although I must admit the isometric view of SMRPG was stupid as hell.

I would not be surprised to see a similar out-of-nowhere backlash for Earthbound if it ever gets released.

Simple, I ban everyone who buys dreck like SMRPG, and give tags out to those who made the intelligent choice of Ys.

Wait. Even as a fan of Super Mario RPG, I must admit Paper Mario is AT LEAST on par with the game and Thousand Year Door blows it away. I can't believe you don't see the charm and the appeal of Paper Mario.. unless maybe Super Paper Mario was your only venture into the series.

Unlike Dragona, I determine whether you get banned or not on which game you're playing first. :)

Would you prefer us to instantly dive into (game of your choice) and then after appreciating the masterpiece, play the other one... or would you prefer us to play (game you do not like) first to get it out of the way, so we can concentrate on (game of your choice?) :lol

A serious comment: as someone who has no contact with the Turbografx-16 since I lived in Europe in the time, how does Ys stack up against other action-adventures and RPGs? I know the combat has been mentioned as being quirky, but besides that, how is the "mood", the atmosphere, and the basic gameplay?

It did take a while before Europe got SMRPG after Japan got it, so maybe it will come in the U.S. in September or October? They should release SMRPG as a single VC release so other games don't get overshadowed.

If Ys and SMRPG both hit, I'm all over 'em.

As for the silly SMRPG>PM argument... SMRPG totally isn't anything special IMHO. It's probably one of the weakest RPGs on the SNES, and that's SAYING something. I'm with Amir0x on this one. SMRPG was an aborted experiment, that managed to be occasionally fun despite itself (and the its great soundtrack). PM was refined, excellently conceived, and brilliantly executed.

That's basically a meaningful version of the seal of quality from Nintendo.

Well, I'm not saying it was a bad game or anything like that. I just did not like it. Nintendo tried too hard to make it "quirky, simple and different." The quirkyness I could forgive, but the "different" reminded me too much of FF:MQ. If you've played those two you'd understand what I mean. The "simple" annoyed me because that was during the time they lost FF and DQ, so they needed a real RPG badly, so seeing this as their "big RPG" was a letdown. I was hoping they'd improve on the pros of SMRPG and add some new stuff like having Luigi in your party. I liked how you could have Peach and Bowser in your party, and I wanted to see Luigi, Toad, the real Yoshi, another Link cameo (who becomes a party member, lol) and maybe even the Koopa kids appear as bosses for a big 3D sequel.... Hey, I guess it could have been far worse. It could have turned out like Yoshi's Story......*shudder*
