Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Christopher said:
you did that on purpose.

Twilight Princess is the worst Zelda game ever - stay away. (it's not a BAD game, it's just not the best zelda game)

Ignore this statement. There's a reason that TP has sold almost 5 million copies and has a 95% review average.

It is easily better than OOT. If you like OOT, you will love TP. It takes everything from OOT and improves on them. It also has one of the best sidekicks in any video game, Midna. This should be the next Wii game you buy (after SSBB).Get TP here when you are ready

damn you I thought that was real! I had a hard-on!

To be honest it's not completely without truth. There's a rumor that Nintendo is going to release a flash card for the DS and offer GB/GBC games for a DS-specific VC service. They could probably do a WiiWare type of thing too, if they wanted to.

So it's come to this: we're making up fake PR announcements.

I'm game.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

March 3, 2008

Earthbound: (SNES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 8000 Wii Points): It's the best freaking game ever made. Download it. Now.

Kirby Super Star: (SNES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Cartoon Violence, 800 Wii points): Another one of the best games ever made. Download this, too.

I mean, what else do they need to say? (I kept it a two-game week to keep it within the bounds of realism.)

Somehow I think 3 titles is more in-line with realism than 2 high-profile titles in one week.

My take:

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

March 3, 2008

Earthbound: (SNES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): You asked for it, and finally we caved. Join a bizarre cast of characters in one of the most unique RPGs ever made. It's the game everyone's been begging for, and we had to shut them up somehow.

Princess Tomato in Salad Kingdom: (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii points): Minister Pumpkin and his evil Farmies are threatening the kingdom of Saladoria! As the brave Sir Cucumber, it's up to you to thwart their evil plans in this colorful point-and-click adventure from Hudson Soft.

Make it happen :(

Definitely grab LttP, it's my favourite Zelda title but cops a bit of flak on here at times due to people having played OoT first or Link's Awakening.

But LttP was the start of the whole light vs dark world scenario.

I played Link to the Past first... and still preferred Link's Awakening. Doesn't have to do with firsties for all of us.

To Proc, Zelda II is a great, if oft-unrelenting side-scrolling action-RPG.

So I'm so broed tonight lol I just bit Kid Icarus finally - I dunno it's a good feeling when you beat one of those old school hard as hell games.

However, the second play through I breezed right through it

It was just rated on the OFLC site, so I think Monday is as good a time as any. Super Mario Bros. 3 was added the week before Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid/Super Metroid were added in the weeks leading up to the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

I was joking. Of course it wasn't a realistic prediction.

Smash Bros. is seeming likely, but I don't think I'll be picking it up. While Smash 64 has a few things that it does better, like a number of stages that didn't make it into Melee, Melee just improved on the original in such a monumentally spectacular way that Smash 64 is just extremely obsolete in comparison. The fact that it's 1000 points doesn't help in the slightest.

Odrion said:
Yeah, I think it's very likely it's going to be just Smash Brothers. That'll be sorta kinda cool, but a tad pointless.
I keep seeing this thrown out but I really am not convinced that original Smash is as obsolete as the posters in this thread say it is. Melee may be a better game overall but I know many people who would rather play SSB in parties than Melee, which is popular with the tourney crowd and as a result, many people can't play it without making it about how they can win the most matches. Melee also seems less pick-up-and-play than original Smash, although that is debatable.

With Brawl coming out and Melee long out, SSB has lost a lot of relevance but it was a great party game and could still be one. I don't see why that's changed. If SSB were to be released tomorrow, I wouldn't buy it since Brawl is about to come out (don't own Melee), but if had been released in the middle of summer last year, it could've been an instant purchase.

People are still bitter about Kirby and Ness and other characters being nerfed in Melee over the SSB64 renditions. I never spent much time with it so I dunno the details, but being a massive Melee fan, I'm looking forward to revisiting it from a new perspective.

Its true that Melee is better than the original in every way but the original still holds a place in my heart for the good times I had with my friends back when it was new. It was pretty much the only multiplayer game we played for quite awhile. We've already made plans to have another SSB64 party when it hits VC. :D

Original Smash is ridiculously fun and well worth ten dollars for a 480p version of it that is compatible with the wavebird.

I'd buy Smash 64 again and try to 100% it before Brawl enough though I have like 3 sealed games I haven't opened and another 3 games I've opened but haven't even put into my systems

:(

Nostalgia is the reason, which is what fuels most people's VC purchases.

There are probably one or two games I bought just for nostalgia's sake, but 95% of my VC purchases were made because they're good games.

I agree, I don't think I would by SSB64. Not with Brawl being a week away.

Earthbound plz, Nintendo

Oh cool I thought of another fake PR:

Honestly, it's not like Smash even takes long to 100% if you know how to get everything.

Beat the game
Beat the game fast
Beat the game on normal without continuing
Board all the platforms
Break all the targets
Do some versus matches

The first five can be done in much less than an hour.

Excel tells me that I'd never played 62.50% of the VC games I have. For the others, I think it's more frequently quality than nostalgia. But then, I'm not terribly representative of "most people."

I thought you were Excel?

Yes, I don't often purchase VC games that I already own on other systems. There are exceptions, of course, but as a general rule, I use the Virtual Console as a means of discovering retro games that I missed the first time around, rather than as a nostalgia vehicle.

Only at costume parties.

Well, besides just games I didn't play, there's also the category of games I had played but never owned, which makes up 14.58%. I'd experienced Kirby's Adventure and Zelda II via... certain means. And I'd played ActRaiser, Super Castlevania IV, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Donkey Kong Country 1, and Super Metroid via friends or other people I knew who owned or rented them. Super Turrican, when that comes out, will also fall into that category of having played it through someone else, and the same will be true of games like Castlevania III, Fire 'N' Ice, Demon's Crest, EVO, Shadowrun, The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. And Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, and Mischief Makers, if against all odds any of those ever show up.

I've purchased 6 Virtual Console games. 4 of them I played before and love them so much I bought them again (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World, Paper Mario) and 2 I bought a few weeks after launch since they sound good based on others reviews (Super Star Soldier and Bonk's Adventure). Bonk is my least favorite, although it's still good. I just finished beating Paper Mario again, looks so much better than the original version (even on my 14" composite TV).

Well, if you want to have a list war, Jigs, then I'm game. :P

Games that I own on other systems that I bought again for VC: Donkey Kong Country 2, Mario Kart 64, Pac-Man, Paper Mario (though I no longer have my N64), Star Fox 64 (ditto), Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World (which I just discovered that I downloaded a long time ago and forgot about), The Lost Levels, Super Metroid.

Games that I either rented in the past, played with others in the past, or played via other miscellaneous means: Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Contra III, DKC3, F-Zero X, Gradius, Kirby's Adventure, Punch-Out, Super Castlevania IV, Zelda 2.

Games that I played for the first time on VC: Actraiser, Adventures of Lolo, Adventures of Lolo 2, Axelay, Alien Soldier, Blazing Lazers, Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Cybernator, Dragon's Curse, Dynamite Headdy, Gate of Thunder, Gunstar Heroes, Kid Icarus, Lords of Thunder, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Neutopia, Neutopia II, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden II, Ninja Gaiden III, R-Type III, Sin and Punishment, Soldier Blade, StarTropics, Super C, Super Star Soldier, Wonder Boy in Monster World.

I will re-purchase Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Kirby Super Star, despite the fact that I own them. The rest of my wishlist consists of games I either played but didn't own, and games that I've never played.

There are some games I actually sold off specifically because I knew I'd prefer to have them on VC anyway. (Some of them even long before Wii was out.) It's not as convenient as it could be because of the storage issue, but still better than needing a whole system plugged in and collecting dust for a handful of games that I usually won't be playing.

Anyway, at least we're now distanced from fake PR. Now where's the real deal already? I want to hurry up and get my joyous disappointment when it's only a single game, it's SSB64, and we find out that the reason the PR was delayed is not that SSB64 will have ten paragraphs written to hype both it and Brawl but rather that from now on the PR will never be shown until Sunday evening.

Alternatively, kudos will be given if any of the following happens: there are three or more games; there are two games but one is an import; or the delay is because NOA has decided that, like Japan, they'll now be giving a VC release list for the full month.

This sounds like fun:

Games I Own but Bought Again:Super Metroid, Harvest Moon, Startropics, Sin and Punishment. First two because replacing SNES batteries are a pain, third one because heck, I love Startropics. S and P was gifted to me.

Games I Bought for the First Time but Played Before:Ice Hockey, Bubble Bobble, Paper Mario, Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II.

Games I played for the first time on VC: Gunstar Heroes, Super Castlevania IV, Neotopia.

Games I Own but Will Buy again:Earthbound, Megaman 2, Harvest Moon 64, Super Smash Bros, Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, any of the Square Enix games I own.

For those who don't listen, the most recent Retronauts went a little into the state of Square-Enix releases on VC. From what I can recall from my half-awake state, Mr. Parish refers to his interview with a chief player at the company (can't remember the name, don't feel like looking through the podcast for it) who basically admitted that SE will likely not be releasing any major titles to VC. These are the titles that could potentially be remade, ported, etc.

So yes, SE 'fessed up to what was expected. This is not such a terrible state if it really only refers to the DQ and FF lines, which have in many cases received superior treatments over the years, but the importance of titles like CT will continue to fade in time.

My personal principle on VC is that i only buy games i never played or at least never owned

I bought

Super Metroid (never saw it in Germany on sales.. wanted it like crazy back then), Paper Mario, Story of Thor (wanted it like crazy when i saw it in magazines), Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (My friend recommended me this.. and I really loved both), DKC (had 2 and 3 on SNES..never owned 1), Castlevania IV, KOF 94 (never owned it.. played it in the arcades), Sin and Punishment, Shining Force (played it but never owned it..)

under this principle

but yeah that principle was broken when i bought Super Street Fighter 2...

well thats not entirely true.. Actraiser is an Enix game for example.. he said that SE games will only be released if they dont see any chances for those games to be remaked...

so i guess games like terraenigma, actraiser 2, soul blazer (was it.?) among some other games could come out.. (hopefully Secret of Mana and Seikendensetsu 3... )

If you go by sales than CT really isn't that major of a title. Same with Secret of Mana.

They're still short sighted though. The majority of SE fans will rebuy it on any system, for just about any price. No need to for carts, cds, manuals, ads, anything.

Heck some people would prefer the unadultered FF or DQ 1-6.

Games I own but bought again: Zanac

Games I never owned but that I might as well have since my brother did: Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario. (If SSB64 shows up tomorrow there is a >50% chance it will be added to this list)

Games I had completely played through but never owned: Actraiser

Games I had played but never owned: Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda II, Gunstar Heroes, Lolo, Lolo 2

Games I had never played: SMB2j, Solomon's Key, Lunar Pool, Kirby's Dream Course, Alien Crush, Devil's Crush, R-Type, Super Star Soldier, Blazing Lazers, Soldier Blade, Beyond Oasis, Landstalker, Sin & Punishment, Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, Bio-hazard Battle.

Games I will buy in the future despite owning: Earthbound and The Guardian Legend.
