Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

QFT. You also have to consider what happens if Nintendo milks the Wii for five years and still doesn't get the third party support for the VC that we'd like to see. I think 1-2 game weeks are going to be much more commonplace very soon.

I just put about a half-hour into Super Turrican and got to the token ice level. All I can say is this:

Thank you, Jiggy and everyone else who ever recommended this game to me! :D

Super Turrican is side-scrolling action at its best. The weapons, despite the fact that there are only three different ones, are all useful in various situations and fun to use. I tend to use the spread gun in most situations, but the laser is great for taking down bosses and enemies with lots of health. The bouncing fireballs are devastating in close-quarters combat and are excellent for taking out enemies in awkward positions. The freeze beam is a neat feature that's very helpful, but doesn't make the game too easy. As for the Energy Wheel, it's quite possibly one of the coolest moves in any side-scrolling action game I've played. I haven't found too many areas where it's actually practical, but just rolling around and dropping bombs is entertaining. The controls are solid and the graphics are quite good, even if the protagonist does look like the product of a love affair between Mega Man and a Probotector.

Still, it's the level designs that really steal the show. They're much more open and explorable than I had expected and it suits the game perfectly. Each level has a lot of secrets and I haven't even come close to finding them all. The game is also quite good at rewarding you for ferreting out hidden items with useful power-ups. As for the difficulty level, it's solid but not too punishing. One of the game's best features, though, is the music. It's absolutely spectacular and also quite varied.

If I had to name a flaw, it would be that the bosses thus far have been disappointingly easy. Still, aside from that, Super Turrican is a superb action game and a wonderful product of Factor 5's halcyon days. It's definitely worth the 800 points and I find myself eagerly looking forward to its sequels.

Turrican could definitely use a revival on WiiWare or DS.

QFT. Glad you like it. If people would quit whining about getting one game and actually play it, they'd see it's fantastic.

I don't think it's that extreme, but there is certainly a cause for concern when Nintendo slows the number of releases per week. There wasn't even PR for this week. That's a red flag. The one game released wasn't even a semi-popular release. I could see the one-game release if the game was pretty popular (possibly Super Smash Bros. to tie in with SSBB, as some thought this week), but Super Turrican isn't exactly a blockbuster.

Perhaps Nintendo's focusing on WiiWare. Maybe there are issues with third-party licensing (especially with the Wii's immense popularity). I don't know. What I do know is that I've gone from being a regular VC customer buying at least one game per week for almost 6 months to not having bought Wii Points in a month.

Super turrican is an absolutely fantastic game, but I won't be getting it because I have the actual cartridge in my room. I also have Mega turrican in there too, but IMO it isnt quite as fun. The music in Super turrican is some of the best in the era and it's in Dolby surround sound to boot!

Entitled isn't really the right word since the people are looking to spend money.

weeeell, if they released more hard-to-find games people really want, they would get more downloads. also, games people missed back in the day.

how about these ones:

Zelda MM
F-Zero X Expansion Kit
Earthbound
Starfox
Satellaview versions of LTTP and F-Zero

Doshin the Giant, seeing as it's already translated to English.

Awesome game, will buy.
Would Nintendo bother translating it though? It probably doesn't NEED it but you might have trouble figuring out what everything does if they leave it in Japanese.

I've been trying this for weeks to no avail. One great game>>>>three or four shitty games.
Exactly, and Super Turrican is hard to disappoint anyone. It's got great control, a blend of most of the awesome aspects of 16-bit gaming, and a killer soundtrack! Here, I'll help you guys pretend the week is satisfactory to what you usually see.

March 3, 2008

Wii-kly Update: Super Turrican and some shitty NES and TurboGraphx games!

March is roaring in like a lion on the Virtual Console™. Blah blah Super Turrican blah blah cocks.

This week’s new game is:

Super Turrican: (Super NES®, 1 player, Rated E 10+ for Everyone 10 and Older –
Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): You are Bren McGuire, on a United Planets
Freedom Forces mission to save the peaceful planet Katakis from the Machine,
source of all that is cruel and evil in the universe. The only weapon on your
side is the state-of-the-art Turrican Assault Suit. Equipped with multiple
weapons, including the incredible Freeze-Beam that temporarily immobilizes
almost any enemy, the Turrican Assault Suit gives one man the power of an
entire army. Use the myriad weapons and powers at your disposal to fight
through 12 increasingly insane levels, free the innocent residents of the
planet Katakis and crush the oppressive Machine.

Shitty NES Game: (NES®, 2 players, Rated E 10+ for Everyone and Older -
500 Points): It's a simplistic sports game that no one wants! Or maybe it's a game that
hasn't aged well at all! Either way this will be get another title screen you'll gaze at through
our catalog and go "meh."

Shitty TurboGraphx Game: (TurboGraphx 16 ®, 1 player, Rated E 10+ for Everyone and Older -
600 Points): Yet another shitty turd being squeezed out of the mucus womb that is
whoever the hell decides anyone this generation wants to play shitty clones of games that
were popular on other consoles back in the day. Could this be a Final Fight clone or yet
another shooter? You'll probably never tell with how blurry we made the graphics! Think of
skipping past this game in the shop like it's another hurdle for sweet sweet Lords of
Thunder.

Odrion, you make it sound like we haven't gotten three-game weeks where two or even all three of the games have been good. Look at the Super Metroid/Shinobi/Neutopia week.

Anyone wanna gift me Super Turrican?

:(

Didn't someone just gift you Phantasy Star II last week? I also asked if someone could gift me that game, but I haven't had the same luck as you. I really want to play the game, but don't currently have the spare cash to buy Wii Points.

Yeah, but I was wondering if someone could commit the same act of kindness. :x

One great release and two terrible releases > One great release.

The more releases per week, the closer we'll get to every SNES/NES/Genesis/Turbografix/Commodore 64/N64/SMS game to be released.

EDIT: Oh, hey, by the way, could someone Gift me Harvest Moon? I'm poor and need my HM fix ;_;

(sorry for the begging guys, just thought it'd be worth a shot)

Is Nintendo holding VC games back bacause of the Wii shortages or are they just being dicks?

Super Turrican is AWESOME! If you like side scroll shooters.

You know, I was just wondering what happened to Retro Roundup. I wonder how long they'll last until stopping again this time.

From the new Retro Roundup:

last week, UK Virtual Console fans received both River City Ransom, which is still the most entertaining co-op brawler ever, and Super Turrican, a solid (but obscure in the U.S.) platform shooter. Today, America got one of these. Care to guess which? Hint: not the one you wanted.

Au contraire, 1Up, I got the game out of those two that I wanted. :P

Also, Squeak Squad bashing later on in the article makes me sad.

Super Turrican is excellent and I will download it right away when I get back home tomorrow, even though it'll be like 11:30 PM and I'll have been on a plane for five hours and won't be in the mood for playing until Wednesday.

time to look back at the massive catalog of classic games and ask yourself if
you’ve played them all.
I don't even know where to begin with this nonsense. A lion would be four games, or at least three. This is roaring in more like a kitten who's eight weeks old.
And hey, Nintendo, I might not have played all the classic games up there, but I downloaded 48 of them and I've played at least 54 off the top of my head (without looking up the full list of VC games, though I'll do that in a moment here and edit it back in). Now stop making excuses and give me more games. >:(

Edit: If neither next week nor the week after that has three games, I'll be editorializing. The release of Brawl with some VC-available demos in it is a quintessential reason to put up more games rather than fewer, and drum up support while they can. If they don't do it a day after Brawl, okay, I might understand that since people will be busy playing that game. But if they don't do it then or the week after, when people might have started exploring all of the menu options in full, well...

Edit 2: There are 38 games on VC that I've played but didn't buy, and 49 that I did buy (counting Super Turrican preemptively). I've played 87 of the games available on VC.

This is an attempt to disguise a plea to download already-released games with a nonsensical metaphor.

Well, damn. Smash 64 would've been so perfect. Always wanted one of my Melee-playing friends to try it out before Brawl (my 64 = fucked :[ ).

Oh, well. Maybe I'll check out Super Turrican but I really should finish up Devil May Cry 4 before Brawl comes out this Sunday. :lol

Whatever happened to import games? There's been less than 5 in NA iirc. Where's Mario's Super Picross?

[NES] Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
[NES] Ninja JaJaMaru-kun
[N64] Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth
[GEN] Alien Soldier
[T16] Battle Lode Runner

Upcoming:
[SNS] Do Re Mi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure
[GEN] Pengo
[GEN] Puyo Puyo 2
[GEN] Super Fantasy Zone

In Japan and Europe.

I hate it when people only refer to the UK when ALL of Europe (And Australia) gets the same updates. Also, we only got Super Turrican (+ Psychosis) last Friday, RCR (+ Adventure Island) was the week before.

And Cheesemeister, you're also getting Puyo Puyo 2, Pengo and Super Fantasy Zone. Europe has Puyo Puyo 2, Break In, Final Soldier, Spelunker, Smash Ping Pong and also Do Re Mi Fantasy as upcoming imports.

Factor 5 were also ahead of everyone in the sound department with Super Turrican.

"Dolby Surround" sound on a SNES title!

AFAIK, only 3 games on the SNES (And all 16 bit consoles) ever had Dolby Surround. Super Turrican, King Arthur's World and I can't remember the other one.

Why can't I gift games I've already bought but no longer want to play?

tedtropy said:

Because Nintendo stands to make less money that way. It would lead to a massive "Trade Thread" on GAF and people would buy less games and trade to play the others.

tedtropy said:

It doesn't work like that. You always have to put more money into the system. These are digital downloads; there is no used game market save for what stays with the physical console.

Between Do Re Mi Fantasy, Final Soldier, and Super Fantasy Zone, I do find it kind of strange that there are almost as many ESRB/OFLC-rated import games I want as ESRB/OFLC-rated releases that were already localized: Dragon Slayer, Ys Book I & II, Mega Turrican, and Shining Force II. And I'm guessing Mega Turrican will be out in fairly short order now, so it's about to get evened up unless we start seeing some ratings for some no-brainer, guaranteed-release games like Adventures of Lolo 3 and Castlevania III.

Absolutely true. :( Also Neo Geo and Game Gear, to nitpick. Because a post of mine in this thread isn't complete unless I'm criticizing something or other, right?

Fatal Fury. And I think Special. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if several titles were in DS.

Actually, that was available in the US. It was only on the Sega Channel, but it still counts. If you want to count Sega Channel releases as import games, then you would have to add Golden Axe III to your list since it was only available on the Sega Channel in the US.

Super Pitfall is also the first game by Activision to be released on the Virtual Console. Maybe we'll get Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Radical Rex and Plok for the SNES - and hey! Maybe Tony Hawk games, Vigilante 8, and Quake 2 on N64.
