Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Super Pitfall is also the first game by Activision to be released on the Virtual Console. Maybe we'll get Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Radical Rex and Plok for the SNES - and hey! Maybe Tony Hawk games, Vigilante 8, and Quake 2 on N64.
I doubt Tony Hawk would work out since the licensed songs probably creates a big rerelease fuss. Aside from full-length songs and FMV in some cases, did the PSX versions have anything on the 64 ports?

Again, it's painfully obsolete and rather unnecessary.
No, it isn't. Just like Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 aren't obsolete post-Double Dash or Mario Kart DS release, and won't be even when Mario Kart Wii comes out. Smash 64 is freaking fun, and I'd like to have a working copy to play at my house when I get the inclination. Would I play it a lot, with Brawl out next week? Probably not (which is why it should have been released long ago, like on Dec 3rd 2007 par exemple), but I still play it regularly in multiplayer, and I doubt very much that that will change in the years post-Brawl.

Yes, one decent game is better than no decent games. But it doesn't mean that Nintendo isn't seriously dropping the ball on the VC of late, and I'm tired of the Nintendo apologists saying otherwise. There are tons of great games that haven't hit the service yet, and slowing down the rate of games coming out just so that they still have something to put out 3 years from now is idiotic. If anything they should be trying to get the catalog up as fast as possible, not the other way around. We can't buy what's not there, and it's hard to sell casual gamers on the greatness of the Virtual Console when the majority of what's up right now are obscure TG16 shooters.

It still cracks me up that JSnake is like a 9 year old kid who has to be in bed by 10pm on school nights, yet he's treated like a hero in this thread.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure = instant buy.

Sorry I wasn't aware that getting a good night sleep was a bad thing.

And you're the guy that pretended to have a mysterious ace source, just for the sole purpose of being treated like a hero in this thread.

You obviously don't know me.

In more awesome news, a friend gifted me Sonic 2. Love that game and the music (Chemical Plant go!) But still, fuck Tails and his endless thwarting of my quest for all the chaos emeralds !

I don't know. I'm starting to gain some hope that we might see Earthbound next week.

First, the Smash Bros. Dojo confirmed (on the Japanese site) that Earthbound is a Masterpiece in Brawl. For the uninitiated, that means that a short playable demo is in the game.

The other Masterpieces in Brawl that were revealed in that same Dojo update are already on the Virtual Console.

Assuming that Earthbound is also a Masterpiece in the North American version, then Earthbound is the only Masterpiece that we know of (aside from the Japanese-only Fire Emblem games) that's not on the VC.

Therefore, Earthbound next week.

BELIEVE.
The problem with this logic is that (correct me if I'm wrong) Mother 2 isn't on VC in Japan yet, and isn't on the list for March either, so as of April, it will have been two months that they let the demo exist without the game on VC in Japan.

One-game week sucks, but at least they're keeping the pattern of giving people games worth playing. I'd give a lot of the recent releases a chance if money weren't an issue, but I'm still holding out for the must-haves. DoReMi Fantasy will probably warrant a purchase though... it looks like a game I could really get into.

The biggest travesty this week is this:
March is roaring in like a lion on the Virtual Console™. This might be a good time to look back at the massive catalog of classic games and ask yourself if you've played them all.

Just go into options and remove him from play. Sometimes, it's the only way.

Jiggy, what do you know about Do Re Mi? I tried checking Wikipedia, but it doesn't have an article yet (although maybe it will soon. A lot of VC games, especially TurboGrafx-16 games, didn't have articles until they were announced for the VC).

I know pretty much nothing about it. But from watching that one video I linked, plus some of the related videos (level 6-1, level 4-1, and level 3-2 were the ones I looked at), it seems really great and pretty creative, the music is pretty nice, it's definitely a 2D platformer, and I want it immediately.

The only thing that can't be judged from videos that I could possibly not like is the controls, but I'm assuming those are more than good enough since the commenters on the level 3-2 video loved the game, and so did the only posters here I can remember who said they owned it: Superblatt, PepsimanvsJoe (he'd edited the commentary into that quote), and speedpop.

There are some more Do Re Mi impressions in post number #17 in this thread on the ASSEMblergames.com message board.

DoReMi Fantasy is yet another great game that Jiggy has managed to call my attention to.

With such a huge list of great games waiting in the wings to be released, these one and two-game weeks are absolute travesties.

To those that have been gifted VC games, do you get a message on the Wii messageboard? Or do you have to log onto the Wii Shop Channel to see if you have gotten a game?

It will message you, eventually, but more often I've found that the message will be several days late. I was gifted Star Tropics, downloaded it, and got the message a week and a half later.

OFLC update: Wonder Boy (SMS).

Yay, let's pay for the same game twice!

I thought we already did that with another one of the Wonder Boy / Adventure Island / Whatever games... the one that appeared on the Genesis and Turbo.

Yep, Wonder Boy in Monster World/The Dynastic Hero. I also think they'll eventually release Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap despite having Dragon's Curse.

I can't remember -- which is the one I'm supposed to buy, again? I don't need two of the same game...

I remember loving the main song from Wonder Boy (SMS). I still hum it from time to time even though I haven't played the game in over twenty years! :lol

Super Turrican has one of the most badass soundtracks on the SNES. WTF happened with Super Turrican 2? What a misfire.

Same here... first time I saw him riding the skateboard, as a skater myself at the time, I thought that was the coolest thing ever in a videogame. Man, some of the later stages were pretty tough!

Do we know what Master System games are going to cost? I haven't seen anything about it anywhere.

When they were first announced, they said Master System and Game Gear games will start at 500 points.

500 points is fair enough. I was dreading that they were going to cost 600. >_>

So which game is the Master System Wonder Boy title a port of? It's hard to keep that series straight.

Wow, how did Factor 5 not get sued for their blunt ripoff of Aliens. :lol

What aspects of the game are you referring to? Music? Graphics? Contra's last level is pretty much a direct Aliens ripoff too but I guess they were never sued over it either.

Do you have WiiConnect24 and Standby Mode ON or OFF? I don't know how the Wii works exactly but if you don't have the wireless on all the time there is no guarantee that you will get any messages in a timely manner. I don't think the system goes out and checks as soon as you power it on, although it should, of course. It must be on some kind of timer or something.

It's the original Wonder Boy game, so it's not part of the Monster World spinoff.

This is every game in the series and their rereleases/remakes:

Wonder Boy (Arcade/SMS/SG-1000) = remade as Adventure Island (NES/Mobile phone)
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Arcade/SMS) = remade as Bikkuriman World (PCE)
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (Arcade/Mega Drive/TGCD)
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS/Game Gear) = remade as Dragon's Curse (TG16) which confusingly is called Adventure Island in Japan
Wonder Boy in Monster World (Mega Drive/SMS) = remade as The Dynastic Hero (TGCD)
Monster World IV (Mega Drive)

Sega Ages 2500: Monster World Complete Collection has all versions of every game that has the Wonder Boy characters (So not Adventure Island, Dragon's Curse, The Dynastic Hero and Bikkuriman World).

Let's hope! Daddy needs his lovely, clear pixels! <3 <3

Wonder Boy in Monster Land (ie: Monster World I) better make it over too....

I guess this pretty much assures that Wonder Boy in Monster Land will get released, as if that wasn't already assured. Cool, cool.

Now where's my Monster World IV? I for one would play it even in Japanese.

Yeah, WiiConnect is on. It was really strange. I downloaded Startropics then a few days/weeks later I got the blue blink and a message from Nintendo saying I'd been gifted Startropics.

I guess this is one of those situations where Gametap is the solution.

Seriously, though, unless it gets localized, I wouldn't expect Monster World IV on the VC. Somehow, I just don't see Nintendo putting a fully Japanese game on the service where there's actually a significant amount of text involved.

However, I wouldn't call the chances for Monster World nil, per se. After all, Nintendo actually did do some honest-to-goodness translation for the release of Sin and Punishment - that is, they translated the tutorial text for that game.

As you say, it's just one more thing for you to be disappointed by when it doesn't happen. ;)

Nintendo wouldn't be the ones needed to translate Monster World IV, though, just Sega. [Edit: Or WestOne? I don't even know if that company still exists, to be honest, after all my attempts to understand the rights of this series.]

I wouldn't be too surprised if it happened, considering how often they like to release compilations across bunches of systems--meaning that a translation for VC would also potentially be a translation for DS, or XBLA, or PSP2 (PSP already had a Monster World collection and I think it stayed in Japanese)--but it probably boils down to how well the other Wonder Boy games have done so far and will do in the future.

Which is just another reason I'll buy Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and why if they release that other version of Dragon's Curse I'll probably buy that too.

Out of curiosity, was there any translation done for that Ninja JaJa...Something game that came out a while back?

Ninja JaJaMaru-kun

I am not sure, but reading about the game on Wikipedia gives me the impression that it is one of those games that wouldn't need any translating.

Iam Canadian said:

What little Japanese screen text there was received no translation. Basically, just the title itself and the new enemy character introduction screens.

I know it has its critics, but my curiosity means I shall be getting Kirby 64. I think I'll get a little fun out of it, and it'll be nice to play one of the few Nintendo N64 games I missed out on.
