Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Japanese update on Tuesday:

-Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (Renegade) (FC)
-Super Gussun Oyoyo (SFC)
-Bomberman: Panic Bomber (PCE)
-Mr. Heli (PCE)

So basically, they get every remaining game this month next week, leaving nothing for the last week, which would imply that WiiWare will indeed be taking away from VC releases :(

That wouldn't be too bad as long as we start seeing 4 game weeks again, like next Tuesday for Japan :D

It's great that Final Soldier now has an ESRB rating. To me, it isn't quite as good as Soldier Blade, but it's a little better than Super Star Soldier. It also doesn't need any translation, but we'll probably be charged an extra 100 points anyway.

Will be mine day one. I really hope it doesn't take too long to come out.

Then again, the import weeks have been really spaced out so far and we already know we're not getting it this month. >_>

I don't plan on getting this since I already have it in several different forms, but I am curious as to how they'll handle the lock-on aspect.

Square developed King's Knight.

I doubt the lock-on stuff is in at this point. The ESRB rating just says Sonic & Knuckles, it mentions nothing of Knuckles in Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 & Knuckles. We'll probably have to buy them separately at some point later.

Yes, I know that.

I was referring to the fact that we're actually seeing a Square game (a genuine Square game, not a Taito one) on the service.

Oh.

Well they did ActRaiser (an enix published game) so it stands to reason any game that either square or enix published that is not super popular and remakable should be unsuprising.

It was released in Japan in November, so it was pretty much inevitable. They also have Hanjuku Hero, but that was never released outside Japan originally, so I doubt we'll see it.

By the way, do you know the guy who did the EB fanart your avatars are from? Because I do, and I thought maybe I know you from elsewhere without being aware of it the whole time (Unless your username's the same everywhere, then no).

Hasn't Square-Enix repeatedly stated they don't want their games on download services though?

I say bring it on, give me Torneko: The Last Hope on PSN so I can take it with me on my PSP.

Don't get too excited. As a child I remember excitedly renting King's Knight for NES back in the day and it was awful. Seems like it was almost like some kind of medieval vertical shooter but you had a little guy with a sword instead of a ship. I might be thinking of something else, though.

I know what it is, I still have my cartridge for it. It's a fun little game.

Man, I'd be in this thread a lot more if not for the fact that my refrigerator is so damn small.

Nintendo seriously dropped the ball there. I was d/ling VC games nonstop for the first month or two... then space started becoming an issue, so I just stopped.

I just delete a game after I beat it. Then I copy it from my SD card a few months later when I want to play it again.

Honestly, no. I just got them off of Starmen.Net's fanart section. >_>

Awesomer. So now I can set myself up by hoping for a blockbuster TG16 April showcasing Final Soldier, Ys Book I & II, and Dragon Slayer. And an overall blockbuster VC April also featuring Fantasy Zone, Mega Turrican, Gleylancer, and Shining Force II. Yes, yes.

:( Well, that sucks. And there goes my possible reasoning that WiiWare would increase the pace of VC releases due to cross-promotion.

Yup.

Hey guys, there's always Sonic Mega Collection!

You need to launch Sonic3 60 times to get Sonic And Knuckles lock on :(((

I don't understand why some classic compilations feel the need to lock games at the start. Just give me all the games from the get go and let me play what I want. Make the unlockables concept art and things like that.

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

Are you afraid of the dark? If so, this is a great week to face your fears with a pair of eerie new game offerings on Nintendo’s Virtual Console™. One will plunge you deep underground to navigate perilous caves, while the other puts you on the front lines of a darkly sinister space war. In either case, your frights will give way to serious fun.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Spelunker™ (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Wander through miles of uncharted caves in search of the legendary underground pyramid and its vast treasures. To complete your adventure, you will swing from ropes and ladders, run across unstable terrain and down ravines, operate elevators, mining carts and rafts. You will collect keys, bombs, flares, jewels, sacks of gold coins and other valuable items as you navigate the hazardous terrain. But beware of the scalding steam vents, poisonous bats and the avenging spirits of dead spelunkers that lurk in every corner of this massive underground labyrinth.

SUPER R-TYPE® (Super NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone — Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): A galactic battle begins. The BYDO Empire of mutant extraterrestrials is back with evil intent and awesome power. Now the evil empire is poised to launch a new attack on Earth. Only the revolutionary R-9, the planet’s most advanced form of defense, stands between these monsters and doom. Fight through seven challenging stages—picking up power-up items as you progress—on the way to each stage’s memorable boss. Is the BYDO Empire invincible? You’ll need lightning reflexes, intuitive moves and a big dose of cosmic luck to hold your own. Better prepare yourself, because the mutants “R” ready for you.

The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo’s Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information about Wii, please visit wii.com or contact:

No, they've just said they don't want FF/DQ games on the retro download services. And that's larely because they continually release remakes of them.

Lower tier stuff like Mana, Soul Blazer or Ogre Battle is fair game though.

Meh week, especially since I thought Super R-Type was already on the service and I didn't care then either. And Spellunker?! Ugh. Give us River City Ransom already!

I think I just almost felt my standards slip. :( Five minutes after I read the PR and instantly knew I didn't want either game, I almost had the thought, "Well, at least it's not a one-game week this time." But I stopped myself in time!

I dunno, I think even Mana (as in Secret of Mana) is probably considered offlimits. They'd probably try to remake that game first. Chrono Trigger too.

Greedy bastards :(

EDIT: and wow i youtubed spelunker or whatever, looks terrible.

S-E currently seems to have enough disdain for the traditional Mana series that I'm not writing off an SoM release on VC. But maybe that's just hope speaking.

R-Type III killed any desire I might have had to blast off and strike the BYDO Empire.

As for Spelunker, unless it's some amazing overlooked NES gem that I've managed to miss all of these years, I'll pass.

Then again, I've still barely started Do-Re-Mi Fantasy, so it's not like I really needed a particularly good week. >_>

One of my friends bought it at a pawn shop in the early 90s. Spelunker is so wretched that it was barely playable even then. It is from the generation of games that were still grounded in many of the Atari 2600 mechanics. You have to make your way through 4 levels (can't remember if they scroll at all, if they do, it's not very far) climbing down a cave filled with traps. This would be much easier if your player character could survive jumping or falling much more than his own height. Almost every death comes from making a drop that any other character in the history of video games would survive.

Of course, once you clear those 4 short but annoying levels, it changes the palette and starts over.

Spelunker

LOL. I've never seen this game before. It looks like an "advanced Montezuma's Revenge" but damn at the same it didn't seem to have aged well.

Gley Lancer, Phantasy Star 3 and Phantasy Star 4 have all been pulled from the USK ratings, which I think is a pretty solid confirmation we weren't supposed to know about them. Super Fantasy Zone, strangely enough, is still on there.

I'm not sure whether to hope that means we'll get them next month (well, perhaps Phantasy Star III in April and Phantasy Star in May) or to worry that they've been ZAMNed.

*waves hello* Been lurking on GA for years and finally decided to register. I also am a long time shmups forum member. Have this thread bookmarked. Gotta love the weekly pining for EB, more storage, and general classic discussion. I still can't believe we get leaked Nintendo VC PR info from a kid who was grounded by his parents in the last month or so. lol :p (seriously though, JSnake, thanks, you rock)

-Yeah, Spelunker, looks awful. Worthy candidate for the "VC Potato Famine" celebration. But I will definitely be downloading Super R-TYPE. It was the first shmup I ever played and beat. Plus, it's a spiffy remix of RT II with new levels and excellent stereo music (aces Turrican's tunes). The fact it's one of the few in the series I don't own (besides Leo) also helps.

-I Am Canadian, no offense, but if III makes you wince, you're a wimp. Just try getting through anything post stage 3 or 4 on the arcade R-TYPE II. Give III another chance, the surprise sequence after beating the final boss is epic and worth an evening of fierce determinated memorization. ;) Seriously though, III is challenging, but both it and Delta are the more forgiving in the series.

-Also, as someone who owns many PCE shooters, I would caution that Final Soldier is good overall but much easier than both SSS and Soldier Blade. Regarding Star Parodia, great game, but (assuming they release it) don't expect the same depth as Parodius.

-Overall, despite the storage issue and slow releases, I'm quite satisfied with my VC experience. Being able to occassionally bypass ebay and get imports like S&P, Alien Soldier on the cheap alone makes the service worth it. It's a shame Nintendo is going to allow Wii Ware to overshadow it.

-My #1 old school goal this year: Get 8 stars on my Lost Levels title screen and unlock worlds A-D.

-Jiggy who is that girl character in your avatar?

I'd bet ZAMN went down the way it did because of licensing. There isn't any of that sort of obstruction for the SEGA titles, especially the ones that have been released here in collections, so I guess just hold tight.

You're a better man than me then, I guess.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm far from great at shooters. Or good. Or anything more than adequate.

But R-Type is just astronomically harder than any of the other VC shooters I've played and I've played most of the worthwhile ones. However, it's not so much the challenge of R-Type III that turns me off so much as the style of gameplay. The shooters I enjoy the most are the ones that involve the most...well, shooting. The Star Soldier games are my favourite VC shooters for a reason; that is, they're lightning fast with tons of enemies to shoot at at all times.

I'm not saying that every shooter needs to be that manic, but R-Type III goes too far in the other direction; I just don't enjoy its focus on negotiating terrain that your ship barely fits in while dealing with enemies coming at you that you can barely hit. I'm not saying that it's a bad game if you like that style of gameplay, but I just...don't. Nothing against the R-Type series itself, it just doesn't appeal to me.
