Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, and Gate of Thunder have systems where if you get hit, there's a weapon downgrade before death. I think Blazing Lazers and Axelay did as well, but neither one struck me as being that great, so I didn't play them long enough to remember too accurately.A Black Falcon said:As for "one hit kills you", that describes virtually all Japanese shmups, really. The ones with health bars are rare. Do any of those shmups (in that list) other than Lords of Thunder have healthbars? Both of those rail shooters do, though, but among the run & guns, the other three have healthbars, but the two Contra games do not.
I'm looking forward to Terra Cresta, Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone 2, Air Buster, Avenger, Burning Angels, Coryoon, Cotton, Detana Twinbee, Final Soldier, Magical Chase, Nexzr, Sapphire, Star Parodier, Sylphia, Eliminate Down, Fire Shark, Gaiares, Gleylancer, Lightening Force, M.U.S.H.A., possibly Phelios, Super Fantasy Zone, Thunder Force III, Twinkle Tale, possibly Wings of Wor, Blazing Star, Pulstar, Space Megaforce, Super Earth Defense Force, and Star Soldier Vanishing Earth if/when any of those show up on VC (which, at our current rate, would take probably three and a half years), regardless of what kind of health systems they have. Just saying that one-hit deaths aren't my preference.Agent Unknown said:Unless you want your foray into the shmup world to be very limited, I would man up. Shooters with healthbars are few and far between. Speaking of Gradius though and "starting over," Gradius V lets you start right where you die and you get to keep to your option pods (as long as you grab them quick before you move on).
A Black Falcon said:Gradius III is my favorite shmup on the VC, really... SNES shmups did have lots of slowdown, but they were often great anyway. I like those games too, but the TG-16 was not the only 8 or 16 bit console with good shmups.
Recca?cartman414 said:The ones I'm really waiting for right now are Space Megaforce, MUSHA, and both NES and Turbo/PCE versions of Life Force/Salamander and Gradius II.
ETA: Oh, and of course Gleylancer, Nexzr, Recca and anything from the Cotton series, in addition to anything not already in mind. Thanks for jogging my memory, Jiggy.

I love those 2d rpg-ish old games!
Jiggy37 said:Recca?
Recca. :O Wow. That's so marvelously insane, especially for the NES hardware, that I'd probably have to buy it just on principle. And then never get past the first boss, of course, but still.
Also, Cotton was a series? What were the other games?
cartman414 said:Maze of Galious? Good stuff. Was also on the MSX, mainly known as Knightmare 2, sequel to, coincidentally enough, a medieval themed shmup like King's Knight, only good.
Just goes to show how much good stuff Konami had that didn't make it over, like Getsufuu Maden.
Now I really want Saturn emulation.cartman414 said:http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.c...ton/cotton.htm
There you go. Of course, the series goes well beyond the domain of the VC.
I don't mind "one hit kills you," so long as your next ship immediately appears. Man, those old old school shmups where you die and have to re-do the entire level were totally cruel.Jiggy37 said:I've just never been terribly fond of the "one hit kills you" system.

Also holyshit, didn't even know it existed: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9DRmWqIqC5s&feature=related Ok i knew there was a Castlevania arcade but i never saw or played it. The Castlevania whore in me WANTS.
camineet said:Gradius III arcade is one of the hardest games I've ever played. Probably the most difficult shmup. In most cases I prefer the arcade originals over the watered down/downgraded/changed console versions, but in the case of Gradius III I prefer the remade SNES version. It's more fun, less frustraiting, even though the graphics are not as good.
They're just replicating what the original games did, with the addition a long-term pause. If you die, you die.bigmaskstudios said:I have a qualm with Virtual Console games. When playing games that had save systems in their original versions, I'm perfectly content. But for those games that didn't have saving systems... I'm a bit displeased with the way that save states are created. Sure, it's nice that Nintendo added save states, but why is it that it always saves when you return to the Wii menu? Why couldn't it simply be optional (a save button in the home menu)? If I die and accidentally return to the Wii menu afterwards, why should I lose all the progress I've made?

Probably going with Soldier Blade and Sin & Punishment (which I had never heard of before this thread; and looks amazing) this weekend.
Yeah, Sin and Punishment is pretty bloody well amazing. Such superb level design.winnarps said:Thanks for the link to your recommendations, Jiggy.

I think that was only Super Star Soldier. Soldier Blade didn't even have a lightning gun, or at least not a full one... It was a focused laser, with smaller lightning blasts off to the side.crowphoenix said:Soldier Blade is a lot fun. That and they other in that series are both great schmups. However, one thing I should point out, there is an auto-fire button of sorts causes the lightening gun to only go out about twice the length of your ship rather than arcing out in three paths across the screen.
ethelred said:Oh, King's Knight. Awesome. Maybe next week we can get Tom Sawyer.
Eh, I'd rather have two garbage games than nothing at all.d+pad said:I think they should let VC hibernate until they're ready to release a few games that actually are worth paying for and downloading.

I honestly do wonder how exactly these negotiations are going on behind the scenes. Possible scenarios:A Link to the Snitch said:Why won't Nintendo stop giving us games we've never heard of?
And games that aren't even that good?
Jiggy37 said:I honestly do wonder how exactly these negotiations are going on behind the scenes. Possible scenarios:
1) People keep coming to Nintendo with their trash, insisting that it be put up, and Nintendo responds by saying okay, since nobody else is offering to put up their good stuff.
2) People keep coming to Nintendo with their good content, insisting that it be put up, and Nintendo responds by saying that they should save it for a while so that there are still good games left to release on VC in 2012.
3) Nobody approaches Nintendo, so Nintendo goes out and courts publishers, who get annoyed enough by the process and offer up junk in an attempt to get them off their backs.
4) Nobody approaches Nintendo, so Nintendo goes out and courts publishers, and the publishers offer their good games, but Nintendo says that they'll hold off on a release so that VC still has good future releases in 2012.
I really do wonder.
Yyyyes. Why? Are you buying either of these stinkery-doos?Captain N said:When do you games usually get posted? Noon on the east coast?

Diomedeskun said:You're not missing much. The game is ridiculously hard, and only your first few quarters give you any benefit. If you die, you can continue two or three times, then it will restart the game no matter how many quarters you put in. If you put in extra quarters while playing, you get life bar extensions instead, which means you're screwed if you fall in a pit.
The game also has horrid control and is not fun at all. The graphics are technically impressive for 1986, but the art design is quite bad.
The best part is Simon ripping off his tux and having his classic barbarian outfit underneath. The first level music is also awesome, but it shows up in the Dark Academy in Portrait of Ruin.
