Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

The main question I can't find an answer for is, exactly which FC games have missing features when run in a NES... games with third-party mappers that use them for graphics and don't use the two sound pins would work fine in a NES. But which ones use the sound pins and which don't? Is there any way to tell short of trying the games in an actual NES?

I guess the likely answer would be whatever carts used those 2 pins for the sound. I played Gradius II using a Honeybee converter years ago and it worked just fine.

some of the lines in the energy bar are clumped together in the Xbox version. it also looks more stretched.

However, the Xbox version was sharper and more colorful - plus the controller feels better and is wireless (compared to the GameCube 4-5 ft wire, ugh)...so I decided to stick with the Xbox version in the future.

Haha I dunno, I really liked how it played on the GCN controller.. using Y as your rapid-fire made it too easy though (in the older ones)

Guys, do you think there's any chance for SNK Collection Vol1 to see a Wii release in the future? I've seen an ad banner for it on PlayAsia today stating PS2, PSP and Wii... I've almost had an art attack... but it was just a typo I guess :-/

That "Vol1" suffix surely means that a second/third volume will be eventually coming down the line, right?

The ESRB rating for it is designated as for PS2, PSP, and Wii, although the press release for it lists only the PS2 and PSP. I'd say it's a possibility for the Wii, but they'll probably want to milk us with the VC first.

I'm not sure "milking" is the correct word here. I read somewhere that they are still trying out the VC and thus hold back the Classics disc until Q4. The same goes for all those other SNK games announced, like the King of Fighters collection and the Samurai Shodown Anthology. In case of SSA, it is likely that's the reason why they even pushed back the PS2 version to Q4, because they know the demand is there, and people would just grab that version instead rather than waiting on those VC releases. Because as far as I know, the SS Anthology is done, up and running, they're just not releasing it (the game was running during that SNK presentation a couple of weeks back).

What does not add up, though, is the fact that the Virtual Console was slowed down the way it was; in general and in regard to Neo Geo games in particular. They sure aren't in a hurry...

You know Nintendo's been screwing up royally when even somebody like me who has 50 VC games and has 4000 points just sitting around looks more forward to JSnake's PR on Fridays than the actual releases on Mondays. :/

Edit: At least WiiWare(>Wii retail by far, obligatory mention!) is coming soon so I can use these points. 13 VC Mondays this year so far, counting tomorrow's blah, and yet I've only bought 5 games since 2008 began.

between metal slug anthology, the kof orochi saga, the samurai shodown anthology and what's on VC now and possible in the future, I don't think there's much of a chance.

That's why it's tricky... the games should work, some of the elements of the sound just wouldn't play. You'd have to compare it to how it sounds on a Famicom or emulator to be sure as to whether there is a difference, I'd think. I don't know if there's another way to know...

Guess I should've added that Gradius II, which was powered by the VRC4 chip, didn't use any sound hardware.

I also did play Akumajou Densetsu through a converter when I first got it, and prior to getting my AV Famicom, and none of the VRC6 sound chip generated music made it through. (The graphics might have also been lost in translation, unless that was just the inability of the cart + converter to stay in my front-loading NES, which I was using.) It is emulated perfectly though, and there are many videos of it in action on Youtube.

You mean in general or for the Wii? Vol 2 is definitely coming, just might be PS2/PSP only.

deciding to pick up Wonder Boy today. My desire to support certain aspects of the VC (like new systems) greatly outweighs my desire to not double dip. I am also coming close to some of you finally... I only have a few hundred blocks left on my Wii. In all reality FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DONE IT, what is faster, copying the average SNES/N64 game to<->from SD card or just redownloading it from nintendo?

what's funny is that I don't even care about storage for the Wii in regards to WiiWare and VC. My download speeds from the service are fast enough that I can usually grab a N64 or TurboCD game in under a minute. It's just the hassle of connecting to the Wii Shop, going to Games I've Downloaded, then selecting the games and going through the prompts to redownload it. Nintendo really needs to create a new channel for downloads that you can just go to and basically from the Wii Menu do five clicks tops to redownload items if they don't plan on releasing external storage.

Speaking of deleting and redownloading, was it ever determined what the Star Fox 64 update did? I've never downloaded it and don't want to delete my copy of the game if the updated version runs worse or with slowdown.

I thought it just fixed a menu display bug or something. Not sure if anything was worsened.

If I was only doing one game, then the SD card. If I was doing two or more (to justify the time it takes to connect to the Wii Shop Channel and navigate through it), then the redownload.

It also depends on the quality of your SD card. Supposedly, better SD cards take less time to move games to and from the card. I've heard that it can take dreadfully long on a cheaper card.

Come to think of it, I should test my own SD card out...

What is the best version of Wonder Boy/Adventure Island on the service?
from everything I've seen and read, Wonder Boy on SMS "should" be better thanks to better graphic capabilities of the SMS. Back in the day the NES would have probably won overall thanks to the utter shit d-monstrosity-pad of the SMS, but on the same controller I would go with the better graphics.

edit - for the record, the SMS was the only 8-bit system I ever owned from 1988 to my Genesis with Power Base Converter in 1989. I have earned the right to call the SMS pad utter shit through hundreds of hours of My Hero, Fantasy Zone, Phantasy Star, Rambo, Out Run, and probably the worst offender of all, Shinobi. That being said, I absolutely loved the system and can't tell you how psyched I am to see it on VC. Kudos Nintendo and sega!

I had a cheapo Lexar 2GB SD card before, and it took me more than 15 mins to copy Sin & Punishment on it. I didn't realize that the quality of the SD card had an effect on transfer time.

Now I have a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II card, and it takes around 2-3 mins for S&P I think from the Wii to the SD card. Transferring it from the SD card to the Wii is a little faster, less than a minute.

Just to chime in, it took about seven minutes to transfer Sin and Punishment to my PNY SD card. In general, transfer times are pretty proportionate; it would take me a tenth the time to transfer a 28 or 29 block game. And less to move any game back to the Wii.

sort of sort of not. It has been released, but only in Europe so far. NA release is still TBA.

The control difference is an interesting point. It definitely looks better than the NES version. I wonder how New Adventure Island on the T16 compares to either.

I just want more games. More systems should mean more or the same amount of games. What's the holdup? Someone at a reliable source should be interviewing Nintendo about this.

DO NOT under any circumstances BUY CRUISIN USA
Yeah, the original arcade version > the N64 port, by a country mile. I do remember Cruis'n World getting a better arcade-to-N64 port, though. I hope that one hits the VC soon...

According to VC-reviews, Vectorman has been on the European VC since April 5th, 2007. I wouldn't get my hopes up too much, at this rate. :/ It's like Mega Man 1 and 2 all over again.

Virtual Boy Confirmed for Virtual Console

Huh? Is this an April Fool's joke or what?
Of all the sites out there I find it hard to beleive that THIS one would lie.....if it does turn out to be an April Fool's I will be very very mad at that site...:\

But it DOES seem beleivable remember Mario & Sonic announcement was released on or around April Fools? Well if this DOES come on the nintendo pr site 2morrow then its real. if it does'nt then I will lose all faith in that site.

I hope it DOES come because I wanna try them :D

Dude, the Virtual Boy display two different images at different intervales to each of your eyes... Tell me how you do this with the Wii.

grabbed Wonder Boy (as I said I would). It's just as I remember :) But no Sega sliding logo from the original SMS :( (The one that's present in most Genesis games. It existed on the console itself back then).

And for those wondering... yes, Wonder Boy on VC is superior to Adventure Island in every possible way. If you haven't picked up either and want one, grab Wonder Boy. The only people Adventure Island is for at this point are those looking for nostalgia.

Wonder Boy's gfx+sound >>>>>>>>>> Adventure Island's gfx+sound

Blah =/ Not that that's a bad price, but that press release got me excited.

Still, I like the look of Wonderboy, I shall consider it when it hits Europe.

The Wii sensor bar. You put it up directly to your face, and let its sweet red lasers shoot into your eyeballs.
