Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Wow, huge levels of failure here. Our first Wii Ware update in 2 and a bit weeks and just 1 game. No new VC titles, honestly it's turned into a bit of a shambles. The people that are making the VC money are the hardcore crowd. When Nintendo throw around numbers like 10m VC titles purchased, it's because of the people that have downloaded 20-30 titles each. It's not mom and pop that's making them money because they've no idea it even exists. Surely the people not to piss off are the ones making you money in the first place. The mind really does boggle.

I'm done with the VC for good, I think. I bought two games, both rather boring, but I can't return, sell, or lend them like I could with a physical cartridge.

SO WHO'S READY FOR SOME DISSAPOINTMENT COME MONDAY, HMMM ?
Me! Me! I'm currently on a record run for number of weeks passed without a VC game that I would buy being released. :D Here are my previous records:

3t) Three weeks between February 26th, 2007 (Chew Man Fu) and March 26th, 2007 (Beyond Oasis and Super Mario World)
3t) Three weeks between June 25th, 2007 (F-Zero X) and July 23rd, 2007 (Shining Force and Kirby's Dream Course)
3t) Three weeks between October 15th, 2007 (Gate of Thunder) and November 12th, 2007 (Axelay)
3t) Three weeks between December 3rd, 2007 (The Dynastic Hero and Zanac) and December 31st, 2007 (Bubble Bobble)
2) Four weeks between March 10th, 2008 (DoReMi Fantasy) and April 14th, 2008 (Fantasy Zone and Mega Turrican)

And our first place finisher? So far I'm on a run of six weeks and counting since River City Ransom on April 21st. Let's see if Monday can make it seven so that it can tie my second place and third place records combined. Nintendo, ikimashou! I believe!

Considering we're talking about Starmen, so I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo was lying to them out of spite for their Mother love. -_- But--well, whatever the case, I guess it's time for me to stop attacking Nintendo of America and start merely calling out "Nintendo" as a whole for this mess.

I've bought five VC games I regretted and they cost me $28 combined. I bought Super Paper Mario, regretted that every bit as much, sold it afterward, and it still cost me $25.

That's a lot of implication to read into what I was saying. Even moreso when I had just gone into further detail about what I meant--and what I meant was nothing like you're suggesting. Of course, you didn't quote that part of what I said.

Then you agree with me. :D
Yes, I agree with your sidebar tautology which happens to be irrelevant to the question of whether Nintendo's treatment of VC is worth complaining about. I don't know why that makes you happy, though. ;)

Seriously though. It's not like the games aren't going to come. VC, WiiWare, and the great commercial releases.
Gotta... resist... derailing... D:

I'm not sure Nintendo fans have had it this good since the SNES.
On DS, certainly not.

It's not like Nintendo can treat these things like a PC person treats Roms. There is a little more involved then just throwing the games out there. I'm certain there are licensing issues, intellectual property issues, royalty issues, etc. One could even argue that some of the obstacles in front of getting a game on VC don't even exist wiath new games. This is not saying that they don't have a huge backlog of games that developers have already okayed.... but it isn't as simple as you seem to think it is.
You seem to have a strange picture of me, which I guess might be helped along by the way you consistently leave out things I say that address your counterarguments. I already said:

"Obviously not every game's rights are still up for grabs, but NOA's not even providing games like Mega Man, Vectorman, or Final Soldier, all of which are already available on VC in English form in another territory. There's no great dispute over these games, no licensing issues keeping them locked in purgatory."

I'm fully aware of licensing issues and ownership disputes. Never said it was an entirely simple matter.

Doubtful. NCL I'm sure handles most if not all the emulation so the pool that NOA draws on is dictated by what they've done. I'd also be willing to believe that NCL gets to approve what NOA puts up but it's still very much under NOA's control. This is probably why Europe gets the Hanabi festival and Amercans just get that whenever. It's also the reason why NOE threw up dummy pictures when people were scanning for images but NCL and NOA didn't. American's also got Play Action Football at the start of football season, these things are intentional and region specific. I really doubt NCL has total control.

for fucks sake just put out Earthbound already

I hate it how Nintendo parades Ness and Lucas around in SSBB to get our dicks hard and our pussies wet, then doesnt fucking release the games

maybe "winding down" is a play on words. are there any games that heavily involve the turning of cranks or respooling balls of yarn?

Jiggy already addressed the DS point, but when you consider how the N64 and Gamecube came out, that's not a terribly hard mountain to ascend.

When I thought about the disparity of releases between regions (like how Japan continues to get the royal treatment, VC-wise, and the overall crumminess of American VC releases) I thought for sure that each region was dictating their own releases. This completely tosses that guess of mine out the window.

That being said, there is a question as to how valid the information coming from someone who answers phones at Nintendo is about how the VC releases are scheduled, especially since this is the first we've heard of it.

I have a bizarre nostalgic affection for Bubsy, but that doesn't change the fact that it sucks.

Phantasy Star IV is coming out sometime this month in Japan, so it shouldn't be too far off for the rest of us.

I've got a massive appreciation thread in a txt file that I'm waiting to post when it hits.

Now that is something I'll probably get. I've only done a full playthrough once before, and it is the only PS game I don't own in some form.

GBA was pretty awesome too; it just ends up looking not as much so next to SNES and DS.

I hope that we can start up 2 WiiWare, 2 VC weeks from now on. It would be a nice, steady pace for games.
Good luck with that one. :(

BIG FUCKING DUH!
What do you think digital distribution is? Customer happy land?
You never really own what you buy with digital era, it's a fiscal paradise for big corporations. They can control what you do. Make more money. Just guess why all those big corporations want to push people off from physical goods...

*looks at Steam* Yes. Yes I do!

As for VC, we needs some Super Mario RPG pronto!

It just occurred to me that not releasing more games is Nintendo's answer to the lack of storage on Wii problem.

Next to follow: removal of best-selling titles already on the VC.

That's the Nintendo approach. Microsoft removes the worst-selling games from their service, Nintendo removes the best. Innovation!

They never did give the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 back to Europe, did they?

So, uh...any idea what (likely awful) games come out tomorrow?

Quest 64 was apparently released in June 1998, wonderful time to relive that classic.

Would be awesome if they brushed up lots of the criticism the game has been notoriously known for and released an enhanced version we all wished we'd get with the original game :P

That reminds me... what was the late Western RPG release for the N64... Aiden Chronicles, or something like that? I remember hearing about it and some of the development staff mentioned it over in adventure game forums and the interactive fiction usenet groups ages ago...

I remember being hyped for it back in 1999, along with Eternal Darkness and JFG and all the other near-N64-death-age games.

And then it comes out in 2001 and it sucks.

I thought I remember some positive reviews for it... it seemed to be a mixed game... different sort of RPG experience than many expected. I've never played it, mind you, but I've heard different opinions on it.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

WiiWare™

My Pokémon™ Ranch (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The Pokémon phenomenon debuts on WiiWare with My Pokémon Ranch, a game that lets you watch as Pokémon and Miis interact with each other for the first time. Enjoy the relaxing ranch life by viewing your ranch and its Pokémon, taking pictures and sending those pictures to your friends via the Wii Message Board. The more Pokémon and Miis you bring to your ranch, the more fun it becomes. My Pokémon Ranch can be linked with the Nintendo DS™ Pokémon® Diamond and Pokémon® Pearl Game Cards to deposit the Pokémon you’ve caught in these games in your ranch. You can deposit a maximum of 1,000 Pokémon from up to eight different game cards. Make your ranch livelier by playing with your friends and family.

Virtual Console™

DIG DUG™ (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Become Dig Dug, the champion of love and justice, as you drill up, down, left and right, defeating any enemies in your path. Avoid the persistent Pooka and the deep-dwelling but whimsical Fygar as you defeat all the enemies in order to clear each stage. Defeat enemies by hitting them with the harpoon and pumping air into them, or by dropping rocks on them from above. Receive bonus points by getting the vegetables that appear in the middle of the stage. Receive high points for defeating deep-dwelling enemies or by defeating Fygars from the side with the harpoon. Pass through inflated enemies or defeat enemies in an adjacent passage for an even higher score. Lure multiple enemies and defeat them with a single rock from above in this thrilling action game.

BIO MIRACLE BOKUTTE UPA (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 600 Wii Points): BIO MIRACLE BOKUTTE UPA is an action game released in 1988, but it was never available outside of Japan. Players take on the role of baby Upa, a prince of the Akuyo kingdom. Prince Upa must take on an adventure spanning seven different worlds in order to rescue the kingdom from the dangerous demon Zai. Upa must defeat the enemies he meets along the way by inflating them. Upa can then use these floating enemies to his advantage by bouncing off of or riding on top of them. The prince must also avoid deadly thorns and pits while keeping an eye out for helpful items such as milk (to restore health) and bells (for temporary invincibility) if he hopes to succeed. If you’re looking for a cute and solid platformer with a hero unlike those in most other games, then look no further than BIO MIRACLE BOKUTTE UPA.

Dig Dug? DIGFUCKINGDUG? Didn't we get this game like three times already? Is Nintendo trying to pull a fast one on us by releasing games already on the service? Anyways, shitty shitty week. Possibly in the running for most shitty week.

Sounds legit. MPR doesn't interest me whatsoever, and I already have a copy of Dig Dug :(

I saw a vid for the last game mentioned and it didn't look so hot. :(

Wasn't released outside Japan for some reason. When Spelunker comes to Europe (It's rated) that'll be 600 points for us :(

There really should be laws against this sort of thing.

Horrible. Utterly horrible. What's even worse is that MPR COULD be worth it for die hard pokemon players (1000 slot box is awesome) but $10 is just straight up fleecing.

About the only thing I could say about Dig Dug is that if the NES version is any good, the JPN copy could be something of a novelty.

Indeed. I'm disappointed with the pricing of most Wiiware games. Way too high.

Hahaha, I was bracing for disappointment, but not of this magnitude.

Ugly ass pokemon ranch? No thanks.
$6 Digdug? No fucking way
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa? Ugh, probably one of my *least* favorite famicom platformers. I know some people may try to play it up like it's something awesome you're missing out on... You're really not.

couldn't disagree more. Toki Tori, Lost Winds, Pop, FF:CC, DYC, Dr. Mario, TV Game Show... all games that are easily priced at fair market value. Hell, I would go so far as to say all good games on WiiWare are reasonably priced. If you honestly think those games are over-priced, well the obviously you won't be happy until all downloadable gaming is priced at throw away prices signifying it as the trash it is.

Indeed. The only Wiiware title so far that I felt was too expensive was TV Show King, though I suspect that if I had more occasion to play it with other human contestants - the way it’s intended to be played - then I would be more generously disposed to it. LostWinds, My Life as a King, Toki Tori, Dr Mario & Actionloop Twist are all easily worth the £7 (or in the case of MLaaK, £11-ish) asking price, and from what I’ve seen of Pop and Defend Your Castle they seem to be as well.
