Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

!!!!! You better not be lying...

Looking forward to the EWJ releases, I've never played those games way back when.

Genesis EWJ (what they are putting up) is a questionable purchase, Earthworm Jim SE for Sega CD and its PC port Earthworm Jim for Windows 95 add two major features over the SNES/Genesis original: Password save, and one new level. The new level is an interesting EWJ2-style level, but it's the password save that is most important. Originally, EWJ had limited continues and no saving -- very, very hard game to get far in. Password save (or simple level select to any level you have reached before, in the PC version) is a very nice and badly needed improvement (the game is hard). The original SNES/Genesis versions do have level skip cheatcodes at least, but even so.

EWJ2 had password save from the start.

WOW!!! I have to get a points card. How many blocks will Ys take up? That's the PC-Engine CD version right?

Do not play with my emotions.

This week demands a thread title change.

HOLY MOTHER FUCK WE'RE FINALLY GETTING YS BOOK I & II!?

I'll probably be banished to the sixth circle of hell for uttering these words, but I think I have to be reassured about Ys Book I & II. I just watched the video posted on VC-Reviews and the combat system looks . . . gross. I'm sure there are many compelling reasons to play Ys: Book I & II, but if the combat system resembles Hydlide (which is unfortunately the first comparison that came to mind while watching the video), I'm not touching the game with a ten foot pole.

That would be because the combat system in Ys pretty much consists of you just walking into monsters, which is indeed gross. Loved the game back in the day, but really, it's a pretty terrible game technically.

Yeah, it essentially depends on how much you like bonking-into-monsters grindfest gameplay.

So in order to "fight" an enemy all you have to do is be facing them when you walk into them? That's what it looked like on youtube and based off of that footage I don't think that will be a VC purchase I'll be making.

The 'strategy' is that you have to bonk into them on the sides or back; run into them in the front and they might hit you, since that's where their weapon is.

The battle system isn't bad, really, but for me, the fact that it's pretty much all a giant grind is...

Copypasta'd from Capcom-Unity. Seems like Megaman 1 is VC bound Monday:

To quote a blurb from the front page of Capcom-Unity:

To prepare all you Mega Man fans for the release of Mega Man 9 in September, we're going to offer you the opportunity to play the game that started it all. The original Mega Man game returns on the Virtual Console this Monday, August 4, 2008. Yes, that's right. Brush up on your old school skills and prepare for some cool contests we have in store. We also plan to re-release Mega Man 2 in early September as well.

Can't wait. I wonder what sorta contests are we talking here?

lol....kinda snuck that VC game in there and no one is paying attention....
I'm picking it up for sure, even though I have the Anniversary Collection....now for those corrected controls...

There is absolutely no way we have Mega Man, Ys, and SS II coming on Monday.

That's right, because we're also getting Shining Force II, Earthbound, Phantasy Star, and all of the SNES Final Fantasy games. Oh, I also hear that Nintendo is giving everyone a pony.

What tipped you off? Was it the Capcom announcement on its community site?

What? SS2 and Ys Books 1 and 2 AND Megaman for monday?? No fucking way Nintendo would be that awesome. NO.FUCKING.WAY.

I'd buy all three!

Please stop posting random bullshit. It would be appreciated.

Of course CluCluLand and Megaman1 are "possibilities" one is one of the last viable NES releases from NOA and the other has already been released months back on other region VC lists, and is a popular precursor to a brand new retro-styled downloadable title which will also be available on said service.

I kinda want them on VC since it has save states. So I don't have to do wily stages all in one run if i don't want to.

About as random as the subtitle for Animal Crossing Wii and Pikmin 3 ^_^

Don't forget, we've got two seperate publishers who think they have a WiiWare game coming out on Monday too per Capndrake. As much as I'd like to see five games, I'm guessing one or more titles slip. Probably Ys, since Capcom and SNK were confident enough to send out press releases. Then again, Sega sent out a press release for Vectorman last year, and we're still waiting on that, so who knows. :lol

Sure it ain't. Your little insider spiel is not only irritating to people actually in the know, but also something that is bannable by the TOS.

I've just downloaded Art of Fighting 2, and I've noticed that it has a save system for the one player mode, letting the player save the game and continue after losing every continue.

Was that in the original game? Are there other NeoGeo games with similar save features?

I had played AoF2 in the arcades and with an emulator before, but I hadn't seen any save options there. Anyway, it's quite useful considering how cheap the AoF2 AI is (It directly reads the player's input quite often, sometimes it's even possible to use that against it).

If Mega Man is actually released tomorrow, it'll be the first Virtual Console game I get in months. I have 700 Wii Points just begging to be used.

You obviously don't know that Nintendo of America hates the Mother/EarthBound franchise.

Nintendo actively hates Mother fans, and even more so, those not in Japan. I imagine, we'll be waiting a while on Earthbound.

Almost every Neo-Geo MVS game supported an external memory card for saving data, likely to be able to transfer progress to an AES version. This is also emulated in MAME (although in that, a virtual memory card must be created and "inserted" first, before you're given the option to save after not continuing) and SNK Arcade Classics (which automatically creates the data without you seeing the saving interface, you only see a "creating checkpoint" message), although I'm not sure if any standalone Neo emulators support it. Some (but not all) of the Neo-Geo AES games on the VC emulate this memory card saving functionality, and this is evidently one of them.

Others include Baseball Stars 2, Burning Fight, Magician Lord, Metal Slug, Ninja Commando, and Top Hunter. I think there are a few more as well.

Nintendo denies all knowledge of the Mother series in North America. They really don't know who those kids 'Ness and Lucas' are in Brawl.

I don't know who to hate more, NoA, or NoJ in regards to never translating Mother

Ys I & II are awesome for the music alone. I only have Japanese copies of the game... an the poorly translated SMS one... I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Do you mean Mother 3? Because Mother was officially translated, just not released commercially.

capcom is intentionally releasing mega man on v.c. on the day i have to leave town on business

thanks a lot, capcocksuckers. when i'm in board meetings i'll be silently cursing you

I really do hope Ys hits tomorrow. I've had a thread for it all ready to go ever since it was ESRB rated. :\

Prepare for a lot of bitching in that thread because of people not reading how to play the game beforehand.

I can just see it now, "WTF is this shit?! You RAM your opponents to damage them? #$%* I just wasted 900 Wii Points!!!!"

It will be a sad day, because so many people won't play beyond the first dungeon of that amazing game.

According to VC PCE, it does.

Yeah, I know it's supposed to... but I can't believe it until I see it. Especially considering all of the other games that are also supposed to hit tomorrow, it feels like something is going to get dropped.

As one of the big-name old RPG series I hadn't yet played, I tried out the NES Ys a few years ago. The battle system was a real turn-off, and nothing else seemed particularly good enough to make up for it. I think I got through most of the game, though I didn't finish it. I did hit the level cap.

Perhaps my experience was much the worse for not having anyone explain the thing to me beforehand. I mean, to me it just seemed like ramming the enemy and hurting yourself. But to read some people, there's great strategy in... different ways of ramming the enemy and hurting yourself.

The NES/Famicom one isn't really a good representation of the series. Gameplay-wise, even the PC-Engine Ys I + II pales in comparison to the PC Eternal installments... The music is what keeps me hooked in Ys.

If you attack properly, you shouldn't hurt yourself at all.
