Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

For certain people yes. Personally I prefer Alien Crush. The balls's physics are more realistic and the table is the best one in the world that isn't an Devil's Crush table.
My worry is that they would miss what made those old games great an make a new sequel that would be shittier. :(

Just wondering...why are WiiWare games being discussed in this thread? Isn't this the VC thread? Doesn't WiiWare have it's own thread? Why, NeoGAF, why?
In fairness, it's not like we have anything else worth talking about in here :P At least this week.

A bad one-game week? It's all over, guys. D:

I'm just thinking about it like a roller coaster. This week is just that slow climb back to awesome!

This is a good way to think of it.

I hope the climb isn't too slow, though.

Alien Crush block size?

289 with a 1 block save file. The manual mentions that (presumably free, since it doesn't show Pay to Play) DLC becomes available after obtaining "certain conditions" in the game, but doesn't give any details about its content or size.

At least recent ratings and Japanese release lists can let us expect that Castlevania III, Mega Man 3, M.U.S.H.A., and Ogre Battle should all be released eventually. I'll buy each when they come.

VC games 'save state' whenever you exit via the home menu, right? Ogre Battle is just begging for that feature.

Seeing how no one wants to talk about Wiiware games in the Wiiware thread let me say that I just finished the story mode of Alien Crush and it was really fun. Now to see if anyone else is online so I can challenge them.

Which Ogre Battle? OH MY GOD

Japanese PC Engine games for November:

-Nekketsu Koukou Dodge Ball-Bu CD Soccer-hen (CD, November 4th)
-Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu (CD)
-Cadash
-Volfied

Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SuperGrafx) seems to have disappeared.

No games on the EU/AU/US lists yet, so don't count on any TG games for November.

Volfied is a cool take on Qix if you're interested, hopefully that comes out here. Nice to see Xanadu come out in Japan, even if I didn't like it nearly as much as the Turbo Ys games.

Also news of Ogre Battle is very good indeed.

as long as you don't mean Ogre Battle 64 ;)

N64 games don't save state

Wait there's more than one table now?

There's a STORY mode? (wtf is up with a pinball story, dear God)

Yeah, the story is lame (just text as you start the table) but there is a sequence of tables with killer bosses.

Probably my favorite pinball game since Metroid Pinball.

$8, you can't go wrong.

Bah, i'm already sold to this one you know ;P
I have to clean the damn fridge though. Freaking storage space of shit.

What is the name of the VC game where you run around a ship and hack into computers? I can't even remember what system its on but I do recall some interesting similarities to Metroid, Flashback and Prince of Persia. Any idea?

Sounds like Zillion for the Master System? Don't think that's on VC though.

Thread title fails BTW, Alien Crush is terrific.

Well I made it into the top 10 in ACR. It took forever, but I did it. I could have gotten more, but I had to do stuff.

Now I need to find out if more than one person can play since there doesn't seem to be an option to enter a different name after a play.

I know this is the VC thread and not the wiiware thread, but since nobody gives a shit about space harrier SMS, is alien crush worth it? I'm about to pull the trigger but wanted opinions from pinball heads first! Is it true it has some kind of online play?

Some people think so, it certainly has a lot more going on, more bonus stages, characters walking around the screen, etc. Personally I find it's just a lot of crap that gets in the way. I always go back to Alien Crush. I'll definitely be checking out the new one.

Yes there is online vs and leaderboards. Haven't tried it yet though. There is also DLC.

And yes it's fun.

I can't believe they released Space Harrier (SMS). :( Now, I loved it back in the day, but even then, I knew it was a pretty crappy port. Surprising for the SMS that it could do what it did, but it was never the right platform for a game that relies so heavily on hardware scaling. Couldn't they do the 32X version at least?

N64 games don't save state

Fortunately, OB64 has a suspend feature, so it isn't in the dire need of save states that the original is.

hahaha i didn't even notice it was the SMS version, ouch. I guess I sort of assumed it'd be the superior TG16 version. Space Harrier 2 GEN is already on VC, and that's the best of all of them.

No way, Space Harrier II on Genesis is awful. The TG16 game is much better... none of them (NES, SMS, Genesis, TG16 compare to 32X Space Harrier, of course, but the TG16 one is probably the best 8 or 16-bit console version.

Space Harrier is a great game, but yeah, the SMS version really isn't worth getting. Considering the hardware it's not as broken as Space Harrier II on Genesis, but even so, it's not worth it unless you're a big fan, probably.

Fuck off, Genny Space Harrier 2 is awesome.

It even includes an apparition of the Flatwoods Monster, with a theme song called "Paranoia".

The music in this game was awesome.

I'm very disappointed to see that Super Ghouls and Ghosts got dropped. It would have at least been another mile stone in terms of system support even if the SuperGrafx had 5 games. Hopefully, it comes back.

One other thing. The Genesis/Arcade version tells the tale in charming broken english. The TG16 version? You're treated to your typical Working Designs translation, bad jokes and all.

The English in the Arcade/Genesis Cadash is just bad. There ARE charming janglish translations, but Cadash isn't one of them. But, despite cleaning it up for the US TG version (and inserting very, very few WD-isms), we still managed to make an error (grammar or spelling, I can't remember which offhand) in the opening title screen to demo loop. D'oh.

Yeah. For example, in the arcade version, at the beginning the king says "I have been waiting for a brave man to arrive", even if you're playing as the female character... not an issue on Genesis without that character, but the TG16 version fixed that issue among others. It was definitely an improved script, for sure.

I have the cart and have tried to play it, but it's just nearly unplayable thanks to the awful scaling... I was hoping it would be good, but it isn't.

Really, all of Sega's early Genesis rail-shooters have the same problem -- After Burner II, Space Harrier II, Galaxy Force II, Super Thunder Blade, and G-LOC... all good to great arcade games that just do not work on the Genesis.

Of course, After Burner III on Sega CD wasn't that much better and the SCD DOES have scaling, so that's not the whole problem... but it's a big part of it. And those 32X (and Saturn and Dreamcast) versions were great.

As someone who hasn't played any of the Crush games:
Ball physics: perfect
Tables: I thought could have used a bit more content, I grew up on games like Pinball Fantasies, Epic Pinball and 3D Ultra Pinball and the tables in those games had a lot more stuff to do. You do get some pretty decent variety with the three tables it gives you.
Tilting: The game seems very generous here, I've been abusing the tilt feature to no end and the game never locked the flippers on me. Maybe its a bit harsher on hard difficulty.
Ball powerups are great and add a lot of strategy and variety to the gameplay.
Overall the game is a blast and well worth 8 bucks.

Huh? Really!

I never noticed. But the only N64 game I have is S&P, so.

Well that sucks! Wonder why.
Saving the state is saving whatever is in the RAM of the emulated system. For SNES that's a few hundred kilobytes; less than that for the older systems. For N64 that'd be 4 megabytes, 8 if they ever get RAM Pak games going.

New ESRB ratings:

Mario Golf
Maboshi's Arcade (Wiiware)

Also looks like Daimakaimura for SuperGrafx has an update of the Japanese VC site saying it has been postponed (Emulation issues perhaps?). So I guess it will still come at some point.

Huh? What could this one be? AFAIK, there is no other console golf game called Mario Golf!

Is it possible for a game to appear on the ESRB site after it has been released?
