Sonic 2 SMS: Awesome, the 8-bit Sonics definitely aren't as good as the amazing 16-bit games, but they are fun for the systems they are on, and the SMS version of Sonic 2 is quite a bit more playable than the GG version thanks to the better visible distance. Only the first SMS game got a US release... Sonic 2 would be an import here.

What's the hold-up on Pulseman US?
Damn game is 85% in english already, and it's not like having no translation to speak of hasn't stopped people from releasing VC games in the US before.
Only thing Tails is good for in Sonic 2 is running into bombs and costing you chaos emeralds.
Had the damndest time getting them all before I switched to Sonic only, then it became easy peasy.
Given that, along with Golden Axe III, Alien Soldier, and Mega Man: The Wily Wars the game was on Sega Channel, there may even be a full English version... either that or they just put the Japanese one on Sega Channel, which would work fine given the kind of game. But either way, there's absolutely no good reason we haven't seen it, really.
The SMS version has the same poor level design issues the GG version has, but its expanded field of view makes the game notably more playable. It's still one of the worst classic 2D Sonics though regardless, albeit still not horrible, all things considered.
Yeah, Sonic 2 for the Genesis is one of the best platformers ever, but the SMS/GG game definitely isn't as good. The SMS game's a lot more playable for sure, but as you say, there's still better.

I like Sonic 2 for the genesis. I don't really see anything wrong with it. Now Sonic 2 for the master system when we already have Sonic 2 for the Gen, that I have a problem with.
Once again, the SMS/GG Sonic games are all original titles, not ports. There were six sidescrolling platformer Sonic franchise games on the Master System and Game Gear, all original titles: Sonic the Hedgehog (SMS/GG), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SMS/GG), Sonic Chaos (SMS/GG), Sonic Blast (SMS/GG) (no, it's not isometric like Sonic 3D Blast. This one's a sidescroller.), Sonic Triple Trouble (GG), and semi-spinoff Tails' Adventure (GG). There's also Sonic Labyrinth (GG) but it really shouldn't count, and is horrible anyway (it's isometric, but unlike Sonic 3D Blast which I, at least, liked, this game is HORRIBLE.).
SMS/GG Sonic Spinball actually pretty much is a port of the Genesis game, as is Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine I believe, but those aren't platformers... the other GG Sonic games, though, are original too -- Sonic Drift 1 and 2 and Tails' Sky Patrol (shmup-ish), along with Sonic Labyrinth.
